“Granny, I understand you have recovered from your insomnia but I can’t bear seeing you hurting yourself like this. Milk is good. It keeps your beauty,” Huo Yunting tried lightening up the situation a bit, “Get her some milk, Zhaoyang.”

“Aw, stop. What beauty do I get to keep when I’m older than the president of the country?” The old lady gleefully glanced at her grandson. She sounded more delightful than offended. Talk about the social position in the family. Everyone had to listen to the old lady in this house, except Huo Yunting, her favorite grandson that had her ears to him all the time.

Lu Zhaoyang eventually went to get the old lady a gla.s.s of milk. Zhaoyang placed on the table in front of her.

“Excuse me, do you have a short grip or something? Would you kindly put it right into my hand? Manner of youngsters today.” The old lady snorted. Lu Zhaoyang’s cheeks twitched once while forcing a smile as she pa.s.sed the gla.s.s to her grandmother, “Enjoy.”

“Now this is more like it.” The old missus finally looked pleased as she reached out her hand. Lu Zhaoyang loosened her grip upon seeing Old Lady Huo holding the gla.s.s but h.e.l.l did she know what happened next. “What in the world do you think you’re doing?” Her grandmother shouted. The gla.s.s of milk fell through her grip and spilled all over the place, including the old lady’s hand before a piercing smash was heard as the gla.s.s shattered like her sanity.

“It’s a wintry day and you poured me COLD milk? Have you wicked mind ever thought about heating the milk from the fridge before giving it to me? Do you plan to freeze me to death so that you can live with Chen happily ever after? I can’t believe you can be so heartless!” The old lady ground her teeth as she lifted her palm, almost wanting to land a strike on Zhaoyang.

Huo yunting scowled, regretting for not taking the gla.s.s instead. He could have helped Zhaoyang to inspect the gla.s.s of milk but his granny’s words were too misleading for him. He thought she was no longer mad towards her, it turned out to be only a transition to her next move.

Lu Zhaoyang pulled up her sleeves. Her emerald bracelet sparkled under the yellowish light of the living room.

Isn’t that the bracelet I gave to Yunting? That is meant for my granddaughter-in-law! How does it get to her hand?!

“It’s warm, granny. I’ve heated it just now.” On second thought, that was a pretty foolish way to save herself. The old missus was obviously finding faults in whatever she did. Now that the milk had spilled, there would be no proof and no one would believe her.

“I love how you delude yourself,” said the missus.

“Alright, it’s my fault. It’s my fault for not being considerate enough.” It would be better for Zhaoyang to admit defeat than making her stance clear.

Old Lady Huo sighed, “Just clean it up already.” She turned to her grandson, “Yunting, would you please escort me to my room?”

“Not yet…” Yunting took a glance at his indifferent woman. He could tell the agony in her despite her apparent serenity.

“What do you mean by ‘not yet’?” The old lady sounded rushed as she had some serious talk-to with her grandson regarding the piece of heirloom she gave him. Huo Yunting shook his head and replied sluggishly, “She might be a sister from another family but she’s still part of the Huo family. Imagine if everyone outside knows about the Huo family’s daughter cleaning up a mess made by her grandmother. You and the whole family’s reputation will be harmed. Who knows, the people out there might even presume that you’re torturing your granddaughter just because she’s not from our family originally.”

Instead of an apology she just glimpsed at Lu Zhaoyang, “Get back to your room,” like ordering her very own granddaughter she said. “Okay—granny.” Lu Zhaoyang pulled a few tissues from the table and wiped her dirty sleeves. She was fully aware of the old lady’s rage but not her constant attention on the bracelet.

“Come, granny,” said Huo Yunting gently as he brought her upstairs. Lu Zhaoyang then exited the living room the moment she heard the creak of door closing.
