She opened the door to the study to find Sheng Yize still busy working. An Xiaxia cleared her throat, then put down a plate of fruit on the table.

Sheng Yize casually sat her down on his lap and said in a low voice, “One moment.”

His long fingers typed quickly on the keyboard as he replied an email. He then pecked An Xiaxia on her forehead. “What are you doing up so late?”

She always went to bed very early.

An Xiaxia gave him a sweet smile. “Have an apple.”

She put a piece of apple that she had cut up into Sheng Yize’s mouth. Sheng Yize chewed it slowly while sizing her up.

Sheng Yize held her face in his hands and stared at her intensely. “Promise me you won’t be mad at me after hearing what I tell you next. As for hitting me… I’ll survive. Just make sure you don’t hurt yourself in the process.”

“There is only one person who knew that you went to the island and who had the ability to take you away.” Sheng Yize paused, then with much reluctance, he continued, “My father.”
