 "When the car exploded I was thrown out, flying a few meters into the air and crashed with the tree. The impact was so heavy that I heard the sound of my hip bone breaking. My driver and the bodyguard died on the spot as they were at front seats"

 "One of my comrade who was with me in the same party was pa.s.sing through the same road and saw everything, before fainting I just managed to say two words 'keep secret', and that's what my comrade did. He arranged a dead body to cover up everything and make it look like that I died in the accident"

 "I survived but calling me a living dead at that time would be more optimal. After spending almost eleven months in a coma, by the time I return back everything was changed. Kong Da not only took over the charge of the military, but he also adopted you. Taking it as the ideal opportunity I went ahead to investigate the secret base under this disguise" saying he pointed at his burned face.

Xiu Mei instantly moved closer to pa.s.s a gla.s.s of water and pat his back. Taking a breath he said, "I-I'm extremely sorry for what I've done to you. Though I don't know what exactly happened when you left the country, one thing is sure that it was something horrible that my Alice is lost forever"

Xiu Mei saw him folding his hands in front of her, "My actions laid down the path of destruction. Either I should have not adopted you, and if I did then I should be by your side when Kong Da wronged you. I'm sorry…."

Xiu Mei was stunned by his actions. He not only apologized to her but folded his hands, something that the proud General Kong Zhi would never do.

Looking at her cold emotionless face his heart hurts more than the physical wounds. He knows what he had done to her. Taking a decision to adopt a child is easy but fulfilling the responsibilities that come along is difficult.

 It was his own decision to adopt her, she never asks for it; so it was his duty to keep up with the decision he made. Just by putting the will in the name of the adopted child does not mean he was discharged off of his duties.

"Alice…." He called her warily when she got up to stand near the window, watching the kids play football in the field. Her hands unconsciously went to hug the curtains as if looking for support.

"No need to apologize, you don't owe me one," She said curtly without turning to look at the man sitting on the bed. "I know the limitations of our relations.h.i.+p. No matter what, I'll never be your real daughter"

Kong Zhi was guilt-stricken; he was always unfair to this child. "Alice, can I wish for another opportunity from you? Please, don't leave me"

"Leave me?" Her voice raised a timbre "It was always you who wanted to leave me. Be it when I was five or be it when Feng Jianyu brought you to the camp"

"Earlier I left because I wanted to stop the illegal activities from spreading any more. Later I wanted to leave as I didn't have the courage to face you" He wished she would give him another chance but knows the fact the woman standing in front is Xiu Mei not Alice "I- I want to see you frequently if possible daily"

Xiu Mei turned and leaned back to take the support of the wall with her arms crossed, "None of this is possible! After everything is solved, I'm never going to return back to this country" Her answer made his body stiffened.

 "I'll take care of you, love you, respect you and fulfill all my duties. After you are fully healed you are free to stay here or come with me. But that does not mean you can exercise the right of a father" She sat down beside him, "Tomorrow I'm going to reveal your ident.i.ty, let the people know that their General Kong Zhi is alive and was working undercover to free their country from an illegal organization. You are going to address the press conference along with Qingzhou"

"I'm not a coward to take someone's credit. We both know I've not done anything" He sternly told her. "Besides I don't want my ident.i.ty back, I want my Alice. Let me compensate for the love I never gave her"

Xiu Mei withdrew her hand when he tries to hold them. "Firstly, you are not a coward; Joseph told me that the formation of the rebels group was your idea. You actually diverted the attention of the secret base and delayed the time that slows down the growth"

"Secondly, whatever information I managed to get was not possible without your help. Moreover, I would have been dead many times if it was not due to your timely actions to save me. So no one can decline your contribution in this mission"

Tears rolled down her eyes as she took a deep breath to calm herself down, "Thirdly, it's not possible to give what you are demanding. I told you to expect everything from me except me. I cannot a.s.sume that things are normal between us. I need time. Can you reverse the time for me? Earlier it was your decision to adopt me, to hand over properties and later leave me with Kong Da. The moment you left me your right as my father forfeits!"

He gently wiped her tears away, "You are really a grown-up now. And I can see you've turned into a strong woman of high morals and wisdom. G.o.d bless you, my child…. G.o.d bless you. In the next birth I'll pray to get you as my real daughter so that I can compensate for everything" His voice choked, eyes watered.  Only he knows how much he regrets ignoring her all this while. But there is no medicine for regret.

By emotionally pressurizing her, she may say yes but her heart won't accept him ever. So he decided to let her go.

Just when they were talking the nurse came with medicines. Xiu Mei takes the tray from her hand and asked her to leave.
