"Are you going to tell me why is Cain Fay so intently looking at you the whole time?"

Uncle Luke and I were currently having lunch at his office when he asked me this question.

"He's just curious as to why a sixteen-year-old girl is at a billion-dollar project meeting, like everyone else," I said nonchalantly and began slicing the meat and put it in my mouth.

He looked at me with probing eyes and raised eyebrow.

"You're never a good liar."

Instantly, I stopped chewing and stared at him. Realizing that he wouldn't let me off if I didn't give him a satisfactory answer, I swallowed the meat and drank a gla.s.s of water before I narrated how I first met Cain Fay and his confession.

"Well, someone is popular," he teasingly chortled.

I frowned, "he'll get over it. His pride and ego is just looking for a challenge."

I didn't know that I was cutting the meat forcefully until a screeching noise of the plate echoed in the room.

"Is it unbelievable that someone will like you?"

"No, it's unbelievable that someone like Cain Fay would like me. That guy has everything, why me exactly?" I kept my voice calm as possible, not letting the old man notice my irritation.

Uncle Luke stopped eating. He stared at me seriously and gently said, "why not you?"

I completely lost my appet.i.te.

I met his gaze, confused and bewildered.

What exactly is he trying to say?

Reading my expression, Uncle Luke supported his chin with one hand. "Why don't you try to experience love?"

Try it? I've already done it, and I don't want to experience it again.

With a disgusted face, I took a deep breath. My eyes automatically stared at the skyline, my mind drifting from that time.

Uncle Luke gradually closed his eyes.

"You speak as if love is not worth the heartache and the pain..." He smiled gently at me.

"My dear Leanna... it's not love that cause the heartache and the pain. It's the wrong man you choose to give it to."

I was speechless.

I couldn't believe that this intimidating old man was so pa.s.sionate about love.

"And Cain Fay is not the wrong man? He's still engaged when he confessed to me. He just broke off his five long years' engagement just like that."

I snapped my fingers, couldn't hold the irritation and grievances in my voice. The feelings that I held all blurted out.

Realizing what I just said, I immediately lowered my gaze.

"You should know that sometimes, engagement is just a form of business transaction."

I sighed. "I don't care about it anymore. Once I'm in New Haven, he'll find someone else that will entertain him. I'm just a pa.s.sing young gi--"

"Did you know that Cain Fay is labeled as as.e.xual?" He cut me off.

I was quiet for a moment, trying to process what he just said, and was shocked when my brain finally responded.

"Interested now?"

Taking the chance of my daze self, he continued.

"He was diagnosed as as.e.xual, that's why his family proposed a marriage between their longtime business partners, the Goldwood. He broke off his engagement maybe because he finally met you, the woman who made him fall in love for the first time."

I 'huramp' at him.

"Uncle Luke, why do you defend the guy so much?"

"Aside from our family being longtime friends. Cain Fay is a decent man." He drank his tea, "and a nice catch," he teasingly added.

I ma.s.saged the center of my brows, "I don't want to think of that right now. I'm still young."

I could only make an excuse for him to let me off. I didn't know why the old man insisted on matching me with Cain Fay.

Uncle Luke stared at me and sighed as he slightly shook his head.

"If you don't fight for it now, don't cry for what you'll lose later."
