Translator: Soldier
Li Zong casually wiped the saliva off the corners of his mouth. Zhen Ni seemed to be in a trance, while Zu Zhichong was transfixed in utter shock.
'My goodness, Chief has married a guy with a short fuse! He's so grumpy.' Zu Zhichong couldn't help but exchange glances with Tun Shanhai who was in the arms of Li Zong.
Tun Shanhai was also stunned. Never had he seen anything like this. 'That was so thrilling.'
Keeping his composure, Li Zong tapped his fingers on the table and reminded others to collect themselves. "You may have a short rest. I've consulted with Zhang Jingqiu. His men will be here as well after seven o'clock."
"Chief, what about sister-in... Ur... Will the presence of Childe He be an inconvenience?" Zu Zhichong flicked a glance at the tightly closed bedroom door.
"It's okay." Li Zong glimpsed at Tun Shanhai in his arms and patted his head. "Go and stay in the bedroom."
Tun Shanhai gave a nod and jumped out of Li Zong's arms. As he walked up to the bedroom door which had been closed by He Zheng, the door automatically opened. With that, Tun Shanhai leisurely walked inside. Sitting cross-legged on a sofa, He Zheng seemed to be cultivating and didn't notice the arrival of Tun Shanhai.
Tun Shanhai stared at He Zheng in puzzlement with his yin-yang eyes. 'Isn't this little good-for-nothing incapable of cultivating? This is so weird.'
He twitched his long drooping tail and then lay in a corner, gazing at He Zheng.
In the living room.
Li Zong watched Tun Shanhai enter the bedroom, cast an enchantment on the bedroom door, and then brought the others into the study.
But Zhen Ni stood still on the spot.
"Zhen Ni?" Han Zhuo, who was at the rear, called Zhen Ni's name.
Eyes red br.i.m.m.i.n.g with tears, Zhen Ni abruptly turned around and intended to rush towards the master bedroom. Han Zhuo knitted his eyebrows, slightly raised his arm and a faint beam of light shot out of his hand and gripped Zhen Ni.
"Why are you stopping me?!"
"Zhen Ni, calm down." Just like what his name suggested, Han Zhuo seemed wooden but was actually rational and poised.
"Chief, why did you marry this kind of man?! You think he is worthy of you?!" Zhen Ni cried aloud.
Li Zong's brows furrowed, his handsome face tinged with coldness. "This doesn't concern you."
"Chief..." Zu Zhichong felt that his chief was being somewhat apathetic.
But Li Zong spoke again, his tone didn't soften a little bit, the look in his eyes so calm that it could even be deemed as callous. "Zhen Ni, as a member of in-staff personnel of Supernaturalism Management Bureau (SMB), you let your emotions get the best of you. There will be an operation tonight, but you are throwing a tantrum like a child."
Without even turning his head back, Li Zong softly tapped his fingers on the table. "I'll give Mr. Zhen a call and talk to him about this. Maybe you should take a vacation."
A dismayed look flashed across the bottom of Zhen Ni's eyes. "I get it. You've indeed fallen for He Zheng."
"I won't say the same words again. And I owe you no explanation for my personal affairs."
Zhen Ni sniffed, half of her face in the shadows. There was light vapor in the air. Zhen Ni wiped tears off her cheeks and gradually settled down.
"Sorry, Chief. I made a mistake. I shouldn't have let my personal feelings cloud my judgement."
"You may go back first."
Though Zhen Ni's name seemed to suggest that she was an obedient, sweet girl, she was actually the kind of woman who was not afraid to express her love and hate. With an obstinate look in her eyes, she stared at Li Zong. "Chief, I promise I won't make any mistakes in tonight's operation. I've already adjusted my mood and I'm poised to do what I'm supposed to do! Let's wait for the second group to arrive and then a.s.sign tasks, Chief!"
"Some half-demons have been manipulating Dream Eaters and already murdered four or five people in Coastal City. If we don't take action soon, there will definitely be disastrous consequences," observed Zu Zhichong.
Li Zong flicked a glance at Zhen Ni, surprised that Zu Zhichong, who always liked to roll logs for others, had sprung to Zhen Ni's support.
Eventually, he gave a nod of consent.
"I want to see your written self-criticism on my desk tomorrow."
Having already sat down before a desk, he tapped his fingers on the surface and continued, "Here's my plan for tonight's operation..."
Night fell on all streets and alleys in Coastal City.
Due to the prosperity of industrial civilization, the whole Coastal City was as bright at night as it was in daytime, red and green neon lights flas.h.i.+ng everywhere. Liu Xin adjusted his coat, somewhat tiredly punched out and then walked out of the office building.
"It's after 8:00 p.m. once again. f.u.c.k! These G.o.dd.a.m.n capitalists. Why don't all of you just go to h.e.l.l!" He cursed aloud.
His stomach rumbled. "I'm starving."
As he walked onto an overpa.s.s, he fished out his cellphone with the intention to order a takeout online. When the order was made, he had already reached the sign at a bus stop.
Liu Xin seemed to be in luck on this day. He had just got to the bus stop when the bus he was expecting arrived, but it seemed as if nothing could help Liu Xin rid his face of tiredness.
It was after 8:00 p.m. and there were very few pa.s.sengers on the bus. Fidgety, Liu Xin sat down beside a window. Suddenly, his b.u.t.t felt somewhat strange. He lowered his head and saw that there was a pool of water on the seat. A wave of anger instantly surged inside Liu Xin, who started yelling, "Hey! Driver! Didn't you see this?! There's water on this seat! Why didn't you clean it up?!"
The driver was staring emptily into the distance, his eyes white, his face expressionless, as if not having heard Liu Xin's rebuke at all.
Consumed with anger, Liu Xin abruptly rose from the seat and hurtled up to the driver. "Are you dead?! Did you hear what I said?!"
Right at this moment, a weird thing happened.
The bus driver stiffly turned his head aside. For some inexplicable reason, the driver's neck seemed to have been turned into a length of fine thread connecting his head and his trunk. His eyes bulged, and his pupils were gone, leaving only the white, which made him look like an eerie doll in a horror movie.
"Ah–!" Liu Xin let out a screech of fright, fell backwards and slumped down on to the floorboard. The driver's head, which was on one end of the thread, dropped down beside Liu Xin's hand with a thud. And then the driver's mouth, which was supposed to stand lifeless, suddenly opened, as if intending to bite Liu Xin.
