While this pa.s.sed, the room was full of clamour of talk and laughter, which grew louder every moment, until Squire Stovin's great voice called for order.
"Gentlemen," said he, "this has been a trying time for our guest. I never heard that coming in to fortune killed a man, but this sudden change in our friend's affairs is something of a shock.
