Chapter 8: Jian Chen Has Died!
“Niang niang, this is far enough. It’s inappropriate for you to walk out any further,” Yue Chan reminded carefully.
“Siyin, I’ll leave now. I’ll come visit you again tomorrow!” Jian Chen swallowed hard, his expression pained. Fortunately, it was night, so Xie Siyin didn’t notice Jian Chen’s abnormal expression.
Whenever Xie Siyin thought back to this moment, she always regretted. If she had known that this was going to happen, she swore, even if the outcome was death, she wouldn’t have let go of Jian Chen’s hand. She would’ve held on tightly to her only love!
Jian Chen stood quietly outside the palace doors and watched until Yue Chan had helped Xie Siyin back into the house before turning away. Suddenly there came the sounds of countless swords slas.h.i.+ng through the air. Several figures abruptly appeared and surrounded Jian Chen and sounds of weapons clas.h.i.+ng rang out. Upon hearing this disturbance, Xie Siyin hastily rushed out of Ordinance Palace.
When she saw that Jian Chen was fighting with four people dressed in black, her heart was seized with fear and she rushed forward.
“Niang niang! Be careful!” There was no way Yue Chan dared to allow her master to approach those people. As of now, the patrolling soldiers also became aware of the disturbance and rushed into the palace. However, they were a step too late. The people in black had been ruthless in their attacks, and Jian Chen wasn’t able to fend off all of them, so a blade soon stabbed through his heart!
“Jian Chen! No!” Xie Siyin’s pupils dilated as she cried out despairingly. Under the moonlight, Jian Chen’s face was terribly pale as he glanced in Xie Siyin’s direction. His lips curved slightly in an unexplainable arc as blood spurted out of his chest. His body swayed for a brief moment like a falling leaf before it crashed heavily to the ground, then was still.
“Catch the a.s.sa.s.sins! Hurry and catch the a.s.sa.s.sins!” The imperial bodyguards had already rushed over to clash with the people dressed in black. Two of the guards moved away from the group to lift Jian Chen up and leave Ordinance Palace.
“No! Don’t take him! Jian Chen! Let me go!” Xie Siyin’s eyes were bloodshot as she screamed. However, Yue Chan kept her arms wrapped resolutely around Xie Siyin’s waist no matter how much she struggled and pulled her back to Ordinance Palace.
“Let me go! I have to find Jian Chen!” Xie Siyin’s tears overflowed like a flooding dam. She shoved Yue Chan aside, then threw herself towards the palace doors. However, Yue Chan ran in front of her and blocked her way.
“Jian Chen’s hurt! He’s hurt! Move!” Xie Siyin bellowed angrily as she pulled at Yue Chan, but Yue Chan continued desperately holding onto the door bolt, allowing Xie Siyin’s blows to rain on her body.
“Your Highness! You can’t go right now! If they end up realizing your relations.h.i.+p with Jian Chen, neither of you will be spared! Yue Chan can’t stand by and watch you throw yourself towards death!” Yue Lan cried sorrowfully, but her gaze remained resolute.
“If Jian Chen is dead, what does this consort have left to live for? Move aside!”
Slap…
Xie Siyin’s palm swung down and five distinct finger marks immediately appeared on Yue Chan’s face.
“Yue Chan will die before Yue Chan moves aside!” Blood seeped out the corner of her lip, but she continued to block the palace doors like a boulder. She knew clearly that if she allowed her master to see Jian Chen, regardless of whether Jian Chen was alive or not, their affair would be revealed. At that time, even if His Majesty didn’t want to punish them, the public would not hold back their criticisms.
“Why… why? We just got back together again… Yue Chan… This consort is scared. Do you think, Jian Chen…” Xie Siyin fell to her knees on the cold ground as tears streamed down her cheeks.
“He’s fine. Jian Chen’s a good person, the Heavens will definitely help him. Your Majesty, don’t be like this. Jian Chen will definitely be fine!” Yue Chan knelt down and hugged Xie Siyin as she did her best to comfort her.
Yin Xue appeared like a phantom beneath the moonlight. She opened a tiny vial and poured the powder contained within on the place where Jian Chen had fallen…
In Guan Osprey Palace, Yao Mowan stroked Fluffy gently as she gazed out the window. The moonlight was beautifully bright and cast soft shadows beneath the trees. However, she didn’t have the mood to appreciate this scenery.
“Master, this subordinate has finished the task.” Yao Mowan only loosened a breath in relief when Yin Xue appeared in front of her like a gust of wind.
“Jian Chen?” This brief period of pain was the price for a very long period of happiness. Yao Mowan could guess how much pain Xie Siyin must be in right now, but she guaranteed that Xie Siyin would be compensated fully.
“He’s been sent out of the imperial palace. Although he’s heavily injured, with the Nine Revivals Pill protecting his main meridians, his vitals are secure,” reported Yin Xue.
“You’ve worked hard. You can go rest.” Yao Mowan nodded slightly, then placed Fluffy down. She should go rest well as well. There was a lot more work waiting for her.
In Ordinance Palace, Xie Siyin was grasping Yue Chan’s hand tightly as tears continued to flood out of her eyes.
“Yue Chan, regardless of whether Jian Chen is alive or not, please don’t lie to me, alright?” Xie Siyin’s voice was hoa.r.s.e as she looked towards Yue Chan, who had just come back from asking around for news.
“Your Highness…” Yue Chan swallowed hard as tears whirled in her eyes. She couldn’t stop her lips from trembling.
“Do you mean… Jian Chen… No, this consort must see Jian Chen! Even if it’s for the last time! This consort must see him!” Yue Chan’s silence confirmed Xie Siyin’s guess. She had seen that blade penetrate Jian Chen’s chest with her own eyes, but she hadn’t been able to bring herself to admit it. She couldn’t believe that Jian Chen would leave her behind to face this world on her own.
“Your Highness! Jian Chen’s corpse has already been transported out of the palace. You won’t be able to find him!” Yue Chan sobbed as she wrapped her arms tightly around Xie Siyin’s waist.
“Even if this consort must search to the ends of the earth, this consort will find him! Although we weren’t able to be born on the same day, at least we can die on the same day!” Xie Siyin screamed madly as she used all her strength to push Yue Chan away.
However, when she got to the palace doors, she crashed into Ye Hongyi who had hurried here.
“Siyin! Where are you going?” Ye Hongyi caught Xie Siyin with both hands and pulled her back into the room. When Yue Chan saw Ye Hongyi, she endured her pain with withdrew silently.
“I must see Jian Chen! Move!” Xie Siyin’s eyes were red. She kicked Ye Hongyi hard as she tried to struggle free from his grasp.
“We have asked about it. Jian Chen is already dead and his corpse has already been delivered out of the palace to be cremated according to the customs. How do you plan to find him!?” Ye Hongyi kept a firm grip on Xie Siyin as he said this coldly.
“That’s not possible! How could Jian Chen bear to leave me behind? How could he die!? His Majesty… why? Why did a.s.sa.s.sins appear in the imperial palace? Why did they kill Jian Chen? Answer me! Say something!” Tears streamed down Xie Siyin’s cheeks as she grabbed Ye Hongyi by his collar and bellow at him.
“Sorry… we didn’t think that something like this would happen. Siyin, we have let you down. But events have already occurred, you must accept reality! No matter what, we will find the perpetrators and avenge Jian Chen!” Ye Hongyi wanted answers even more that Xie Siyin. Who exactly were those people dressed in black and why did they kill Jian Chen!?
If it weren’t for them messing things up, Jian Chen would’ve died tonight from the poison and the matter would’ve been over once Imperial Physician Zheng explained things to Xie Siyin. However, after this happened, he’d have to waste so much time to calm Xie Siyin down.
“Your Majesty! Siyin begs you, please have them bring Jian Chen back! I want to see him one last time. Please! I’m begging you!” Xie Siyin finally gave up struggling and just fell to a kneel in front of Ye Hongyi.
“Siyin, it’s not that we don’t want to help you, but you know the consequences as well if your relations.h.i.+p with Jian Chen is revealed. Even if he’s already dead, his corpse would still be torn apart as punishment for that sin. And as for you! How could you force us to punish you?” Ye Hongyi suppressed his rage as he softened his tone to dissuade her.
“I don’t care! I just want to see Jian Chen one last time! Your Majesty!” Xie Siyin grabbed Ye Hongyi’s dragon robe as she begged him.
“Enough! Do you even show any respect for our reputation!?” Ye Hongyi’s last straw snapped and he bellowed this angrily. However, when he sensed Xie Siyin’s shocked gaze, he hastily restrained the coldness in his eyes again and leaned over to gently help her up.
