Chapter 1
VOLUME 10 CHAPTER 1: DON’T TELL ME THIS IS THE CALM AFTER THE BATTLE OF FAN CITY (1)

Liu Bei POV

I woke up later than yesterday today. I had actually slept a lot yesterday, a full 12 hours in fact but I actually slept about half an hour longer today and only woke up thanks to the birds chirping outside.

Ahh~ I stretched my back on the bed as it made a lot of creaky noises. Even though this bed was rather noisy, I had already gotten used to it.

But the birds are already chirping huh? It’s not like there are not any birds around in winter but hearing such loud and lively sounds despite it being a chilly morning makes it feel like winter is going to end soon.

I got off the bed and put on my shoes before leaving but when I opened the door by just a sliver, the cold air blew in and I s.h.i.+vered as I hurriedly shut the door again. Looks like it really was a misconception of mine and winter is still going strong.

I went to my brazier and flipped the charcoal, making a small fire that I warmed my hands over before going to my cupboard and took a long, grey gown. I thought of putting on another cotton outer gown but decided against it anyway and rubbed my hands as I made my way to the door once more.

Un. I made my resolve and nodded to myself before pulling open my door with both hands. Just like before, the cold wind blew in but it was not much as I expected. Just putting on an extra layer of clothing was enough to stay warm.

Looks like winter is ending sooner than I thought. Even though it is not really the south where we are now, we are not very far north either. In any case, I saw that there were trees which had begun to bud just a few days ago. This is probably the most obvious sign that spring is around the corner.

As I made my way through the courtyard, I touched the budding leaves. They were very small and unlikely to start growing to their full size anytime soon. My knowledge of biology is nothing special but I do know that these little things will take at least 3-4 weeks before they sprout.

Ah~ I took a deep breath and spat it back out. Finally, the mansion had no smell of blood, smoke or heaviness. Yes, heaviness can be smelt. Just a few days ago, as the battle was approaching, the smell of heaviness made it unbearable to stay in the mansion. I do not know if the others were just as tired as I was but they all left once our meeting ended.

Yes, the tiring battle that filled one with trepidation as it neared was over 3 days ago. And the negative atmosphere has more or less completely dissipated over these 3 days. After the battle ended. Feng Xian brought her troops to reinforce Yun Chang while Zi Long and I led our troops to clean the battlefield for more than a day before we were done.

Zi Long had wanted me to go to Fan city as well and get everyone together and celebrate this battle but I asked to postpone this as I still had a lot of work to deal with in Xinye. In reality, I postponed because of 2 reasons, Yuan Zhi and Yi De. These 2 are currently resting in their rooms.

Based on what Hua Tuo said, there is no threat to their lives. Yi De’s issue is a recurring one while Yuan Zhi bled out significantly back then. Luckily, we managed to stop the bleeding in time so there was no danger to her life. She has since been unconscious and has been lying in one of Hua Tuo’s special rooms. It might sound like she is in some sort of ICU but it’s really just an ordinary room. The only similarity between this room and an ICU would be that visits are not allowed.

I looked at the rooms to the side where Yuan Zhi and Yi De were. They were next to each other with only 1 wall between them. Neither of them have awoken yet. I am certain that they will wake up but I still cannot help but to feel worried about them.

Hmm, I still feel like I should go and see them. It’s not like I have anything to do now anyway. There was practically no one around in the day, except Gan Qing and Mi Zhen. And at this time, it is likely that they are both out of the mansion and are at the market that has resumed normal operations.

I would really like to help everyone out but they all want me to rest. I do indeed enjoy resting and slacking off but it does not feel good to be doing so while everyone is out there doing work. On the other hand, my ‘Shamoke’ persona is supposed to be a low-ranking general and I have no idea what a low-ranking general’s work entails. Moreover, I do not have any troops under my direct command so I do not have anything to do unlike the warrior generals.

And so, all I can do is sleep guiltily. Un, I do feel guilty about it. Probably.

“Ah, my lord is awake huh?” A voice came from behind all of a sudden. This was most definitely not Gan Qing. When I turned to look, I found that it was a girl with long braids and standing upright as she ran over. She was smiling but it was obvious that she did not smile often as it did not seem very natural on her.

“Chen Dao, why did you come back?”

It feels like I b.u.mp into Chen Dao quite often during my free time whether a battle is happening or not. I wonder if this is some sort of fate or if Zi Long is just using her too much.

“Ah, I came back to retrieve a name list of 100-man generals that Lord Zhao Yun left here. We are reorganising our troops and giving out rewards so we need it.”

“Ah, I see.”

“Well then, I’ll be leaving now. My lord should get some more rest.”

“Ah yes, I’d like to ask you something since you’re here.” I hurriedly stopped her when I saw that she was about to leave, “How is it in the city over these few days?”

Even though I am on leave of sorts, I am still a feudal lord and I ought to check on how things are going.

“Ah, everything is going well. The market has come up again and the commoners have returned to their homes.”

“How’s the stuff going with the commoners?” I asked, feeling like an employee with the State Bureau of Letters and Calls.

(TL: State Bureau of Letters and Calls is the Chinese government agency that deals with complaints and pet.i.tions.)

“Un, the Xu state 3 have been dealing with it these few days.” Chen Dao nodded and frowned, “But they were really busy and overwhelmed to the point where even Chen Gong who is always not honest has come to help. My lord should really come see how she is so nervous when dealing with the commoners to the point where she stammers.”

Wow, it must be really comical for the serious Chen Dao to find it funny. As for what she described about Chen Gong, I can already picture the scene in my mind.

By the way, I am also really grateful to the commoners of Xinye. Not only were they cooperative with us during our pre-battle preparations, we had also ended up burning many of their houses and demolis.h.i.+ng a number of buildings to widen the alleys. Yet, they have not caused a ruckus over this and have merely waited as we made arrangements for them.

Of course, this is also thanks to the work of the administrative officials Chen Dao had mentioned. I really must thank them later on.

… Un?

“Wait, Chen Dao, you…” I said as I pointed at her chest.

“Ah, my lord, you’re…” Chen Dao seemed to be at a loss and covered her chest as she took 2 steps back with red cheeks.

“No,” I said as I hurriedly shook my head and raised my hands, “I was pointing at your protective chest piece.”

“Un? Ah.” Chen Dao finally understood what I meant and removed her hands as she looked down.

Yes, the protective chest piece that I bought for Chen Dao seems to have sustained a significant blow and is a little dented. The feather engraving has also been affected.

“I sustained a blow when I was fighting in the previous battle. The enemy’s blow was really strong so it got a little dented.” Chen Dao said as she held it up, “I’m really sorry. I didn’t cherish it enough even though my lord paid a lot for it.”

“Ah, no. Don’t say that.” I said as I waved my hands, “This is supposed to be used to protect your life. That it has done so is a very good thing.”

Of course, it was indeed very expensive, as I learnt later. Looks like we should have bought something cheaper huh?

“Un, I really have to thank my lord for this.” Chen Dao said as she came up and grabbed my hand which she shook up and down as she continued with a serious expression, “If not for this, I would be beneath the earth buy now.”

“Hahaha, that’s over-exaggerating it.” I said as I smiled stiffly. My hands were being held so tightly that they were beginning to hurt.

“In any case, many thanks to my lord. I will continue to wear this protective chest piece.” Chen Dao said as she let go and saluted and bowed.

“Haha… That’s fine.” I said as I waved my hands. If it really has broken, please go and buy a new one
