Chapter 6
Captured Again…
–
"Greetings, good gentleman, you are as good looking as the moon. How do you feel about becoming my husband?"
A certain pretty young girl smiled in complete innocence.
"This… uh, well…"
A certain handsome young man was embarra.s.sed to the point of complete redness.
"If you become my husband, then all this money is yours for the taking." She patted a bag bulging with monies.
"I think this… this requires some consideration…"
The handsome young man's eyes gleamed at the sight of the money.
"Even though Xian people have prophesied that supposedly I have the fate of jinxing my husband, the fact of the matter is that I am extremely capable, willing to make money, very strong, and totally a hard worker! In short, whichever lucky guy marries me will never have to worry a single day of his life!"
Xin Mei was an honest child who would never hide her life prophecy. It was also a way of preventing herself from getting blamed on by whichever husband she ends up purchasing for cheating them of the truth.
…Husband jinxer? The handsome young man's face fell. "Miss, actually, I happen to be married already. And unfortunately, I have some urgent matters that I must attend to, so I will take my leave."
Ah. Another one ran away…
Frustrated, Xin Mei watched the back of the handsome guy as he fled away in a hurry. Ever since the morning, this was the tenth person whose face totally changed at the words "jinxing husband." She was pretty sure that her dad's innards were cramping in deep regret for ever inviting that immortal Yuqing or whatever Xian person to divine her fortune. The killing power of the words "jinxing husband" was just way too strong.
Oh well. It was about time to eat some rice noodles to refuel from all the hits she took to her heart all morning.
When she flew away from the Huang Ling last night, Xin Mei didn't dare to land in the nearest town. She flew for six hours straight, and when dawn broke she found this little town. She was lucky that the inn opened their doors early, and she was able to get a room. She didn't revive her strength until after three bowls of rice.
That Riding Wh.o.r.es General was also way too petty. Simply on the account of him not feeding her totally disqualified him from becoming her husband!
Turning a street corner, she suddenly saw a rickety oxcart on the verge of falling apart slowly advancing her way. The wheels painfully groaned on the stone ground. The old cow pulling the carriage was also covered in cuts and bruises and looked totally worn out.
Well, what a familiar ox cart. It's just that… how is it that in merely two days it has become even more pitiful and tattered?
Xin Mei walked over to the cart and pulled aside the curtains on the carriage to meet a pair of eyes with startlingly white whites and startlingly dark irises. The reason why these eyes were so clearly dark and white was because this person… was he struck by lightning? His whole body was completely black. Xin Mei stared at him for a while and suddenly her jaw dropped in amazement.
"Lord Mei Shan! Were you struck by lightning?"
Mei Shan was embarra.s.sed and found it difficult to admit. He exerted all his strength and covered the curtains back up again, pretending not to recognize her.
Without warning, Xin Mei's head poked inside the curtains again. With a serious and sincere expression, she looked him up and down as she said, "This is the retribution for doing nothing when you saw someone in need of help."
With eyes full of hot tears, Mei Shan shoved the head out of his carriage. Currently, he only wished that he could turn back time so that he never met this d.a.m.ned girl and never had to have anything to do with her.
The ox cart shakily drove deeper into the city, heading towards the town's greatest and most splendid restaurant. Mei Shan Jun lowered his head to look over his sorry figure, hesitating again and again. He really didn't want to emerge from the carriage and humiliate himself any further… Maybe if he used a diversion spell… but he was sore and in pain all over. He definitely had no energy whatsoever to cast Xian art.
At this moment in his quandary, the carriage curtains opened again. Miss Xin Mei c.o.c.ked her head outside, looking at him.
"Do you want to enter this restaurant?" She asked. She reached out a hand. "Here, I'll help you up."
Mei Shan covered his face. "No. No! NO!"
"Don't worry, I'm very strong. I won't drop you." She lifted the blanket on his lap and after wrapping his body, lightly placed him on her back.
He had long reserved the restaurant's private room on the third floor. Xin Mei carried him up the flights of stairs with measured and light steps. Seeing Mei Shan was speechless from the shock, she explained, "Don't you worry, Lord Mei Shan, you are as slender as the bamboo poles we have at home. You're not heavy at all. Ever since I was young, I have always had great strength. When I was 10 years old I could carry my Da Xi Xiong (eldest senior brother) and run along all the streets. And he's even bigger than a black bear!"
Mei Shan made a vague "oh" sound, as if he was suddenly pinched in the throat and couldn't speak.
Luckily, the third floor's private room was separated by a bamboo screen. The people outside could not see the inside. Xin Mei asked for someone to send in a pan of hot water. She wetted her handkerchief and helped wipe all the dirt off of Mei Shan's face.
"Lord Mei Shan, aren't you a Xian? How did you end up like this from a lightning strike?"
Tears ran down Mei Shan's blus.h.i.+ng face. "Xian people… can also be separated into many different types… My type is the type that is not good against physical displays of power!"
"Where were you hit?"
She lightly brushed her wet handkerchief over a wound on his face, which made him sharply inhale in pain.
"…These past few days the earth veins at Wan Lan mountains indicated that the spiritual energies were changing abnormally. There are a lot of demons in those mountains who undergo Heavenly Lightning Tribulation to become Xian. Last night, I was watching a dog demon undergo the tribulation, and I wasn't careful and I went too close… and the Heavenly Lightning… hit me."
Xin Mei nodded her head understandingly. "It is not easy to be the Xian of Gossip."
It felt as though a thousand b.u.t.terflies fluttered past the inside of Mei Shan's ears, making him confused and fl.u.s.tered. Xin Mei was applying Jin Chuang Medicine on his wounds, a specially made formula from her Zhuang (House). It was an exceptionally good medicine that was made of Chinese goldthread and gall bladder slowly extracted over the course of three days and three nights.
Except, instead of smelling medicine, Mei Shan thought he smelled the fragrance from the inside of Xin Mei's collar when she drew close to him.
It seemed that even his nose was broken by the lightning strike, he thought to himself, feeling like he wanted to cry.
"Alright. I'll leave a bottle of Jin Chuang Medicine with you. Remember to apply it daily. Lord Mei Shan is a Xian, so you should be fine after a couple of days." Xin Mei picked up her bag as she got up, ready to head back downstairs.
Mei Shan Jun blurted, "You… umm are you just going to leave now?"
"Yeah. I still need to go buy a husband, so I can't accompany you. Take care."
"…Buy a husband?" Mei Shan was stunned, "Can you even buy husbands?"
Xin Mei grinned, "You can buy anything if you have the money!"
Mei Shan Jun didn't know why he felt like crying again. How hateful! It seems that even his eyes were broken by the lightning strike!
Xin Mei pushed aside the bamboo screen just as someone was about to enter. She almost ran into him. That person supported her, and a rich and gentle voice spoke, "Be careful, miss."
Xin Mei lifted her head to spot… a beautiful face. Below his eye was a teardrop-shaped mole, which gave him a melancholy air. In response to Xin Mei's study of his looks, the man smiled lightly with the effect of a warm breeze hitting one's face… yeah, this was clearly not a good person.
She turned and descended the stairs, faintly hearing the Mei Shan Jun shouting angrily from inside the private room, "Fu Jiu Yun! You're late every single time…"
She couldn't hear the rest of the words. She exited the restaurant to see a street full of people and she couldn't help but lift in spirits. Her husband was definitely hiding in this crowd of people! She had to find him.
The handsome dude wearing the yellow garment in front was not bad. His face like a full moon, his frame tall and strong… with one look she could tell he was the enduring type.
The green tunic in the opposite alley was also not bad. Dark black hair and wide shoulders with a vigorous and formidable walk. Definitely serviceable.
Who else… who else… Xin Mei's eyes suddenly brightened.
Just around the corner was a man standing under a tree with a c.o.c.ked head. The view of his back was so beautiful. He wore an ordinary, light-colored, long gown that manifestly suited him, making him to appear especially extraordinary in the crowd like an outstanding crane in a flock of geese. His black hair glowed, and with one look one could tell that he was full of vitality. The narrow waist, wide shoulders, and many more signs of strength in this person's body - all pointed to the fact that he was definitely far from the useless type.
After seeing his figure in the street crowded with people, Xin Mei felt that everyone else turned into clouds of nothing.
Xin Mei patted her hair, straightened her clothes, and felt for her money bag. Great. No problem with her appearance and no problem with her money.
She walked over and spoke to him with her most gentle and tender voice.
"h.e.l.lo, good gentleman. I am Xin Mei from the Xin Xie Zhuang (House of Xin). My background is clean and pure, and my personality and appearance are both pretty good. If you happen to have time, what do you think about chatting with me about important life topics such as future plans and thoughts about marriage?"
The beautiful man did not turn around. After a moment, he spoke.
"The only important life topic I really want to chat with you about is how you knocked out Si Lan and secretly escaped."
Eh?
Stupefied, Xin Mei watched the man turn around. Once again, the stunning and cutting-edge gaze pointed in her direction. She panicked and stepped backwards as she looked in all directions for a secret path to escape.
Lu Qian Qiao waved his hand. A talisman fell on her forehead, and instantly turned into a vibrantly-colored, glowing ribbon that wrapped around her waist. One end of the ribbon threw itself into her hand and suddenly the whole ribbon disappeared into nothing. Suddenly, Xin Mei felt as though she had no control over her body, which completely stopped moving. No matter what she did, she couldn't take even a single step.
The man walked in front of her, and his face actually showed an extremely rare hint of a smile. It's just that… it's just that such an expression made her heart completely tremble in terror!
"I've caught you," said Lu Qian Qiao.
"Wh-wh-what are you going to do to me?" Xin Mei began stammering in fear.
He lightly tugged. Against her will, an invisible force pulled her forward two steps.
"This is called the Demon Binding Rope. In the past, I used this to capture the most vicious and ferocious demons."
For whatever reason, even his voice seemed to carry the sound of a smile, except it was definitely not the genial and gentle type of smile. It was more like a cold smile that carried a sneer.
"And now, I am using it on you. You can forget about escaping."
Xin Mei exerted all her strength to struggle out of the binds, but it was as if struggling against iron hold. She wore herself out and just gave up.
"H-h-how did you find me?" Finding one person amongst all the cities and towns that dotted the landscape should have been like trying to find a grain of sand on a beach.
Lu Qian Qiao turned around and began walking. Against her will, Xin Mei followed him at a steady distance of three steps.
"I already knew the instant you knocked out Si Lan," he indifferently said. "I was following you this entire time because I wanted to see who you would contact. And now I know your ident.i.ty, Miss Xin Xie Zhuang."
Xin Mei suddenly felt her heart drop. "You leave my dad alone!"
Lu Qian Qiao didn't speak, he only continued strolling forward. Seeing the direction he was walking seemed to be the restaurant that she just exited, Xin Mei grew alarmed.
"Where are you going?"
"That good-for-nothing Xian person named Mei Shan is inside that restaurant, isn't he?"
Xin Mei turned pale with fright and she suddenly ran over to grab his arm, mustering all her strength to stop him. "A-Are you going to kill Xian?! I never told him anything about the Mist Formation!"
Lu Qian Qiao lowered his gaze Xin Mei's hands and then looked back at her face. She let go of him like she was electrocuted, and put both her hands behind her back, behaving herself.
"I need something from him."
Dragging a scared witless white rabbit, Mr. Face Paralysis entered the restaurant.
