An unknown future stretched in front of them. It was right across the next hilltop, around the bend, down the road, too enormous, beautiful and frightening to think about.
She touched his mouth. "I just realized something. I don't even know your last name."
"My last name will be anything you want it to be." He cradled the back of her head in one hand. "You choose."
She put her head on his shoulder. "I'm wanted for multiple homicides. I have to go to the bathroom and you blew up the toilet. We still sound like lunatics."
His chest moved as he chuckled. "Setting up new ident.i.ties won't be a problem. I have a backup electronics system at another safe house." He looked up at Nicholas. "I can set up a new ident.i.ty for you too, if you want."
Nicholas rubbed the back of his neck, his head bowed. "Mary was right," he said after a moment. "My father and Sara shouldn't have to lose both Jamie and me."
"I'll set one up for you, anyway," said Michael. "You should have a backup in case you need it." He glanced down at Mary. "We need to figure out our next steps."
Nicholas said, "The Dark One may be dead, but his drones aren't. They're scattered everywhere, and they will continue to follow his last orders until they die."
Michael stood and held out a hand for Mary, who took it and stood. "The drones are a problem of a generation," he said to Nicholas. "In less than a hundred years, they will all be dead and gone."
Nicholas's jaw tightened. "They can do a h.e.l.l of a lot of damage in that time."
Michael shook his head. "That may be your fight, Nicholas, but it's not ours. We've been battling for six thousand years. I'm done."
Nicholas looked at Mary. She took Michael's hand and laced his fingers with hers. "Michael has been fighting for a lot longer than either you or I have. If he says he's done, we're both done."
Nicholas sighed. "I'm disappointed, but I understand."
"I will do this for you," Michael said. "Now that Astra is gone, she doesn't need the money in her bank accounts. I'll transfer the total over to an account in your name. It's a good sum. You'll go a long way on it."
"I'll take it," Nicholas said. "With thanks."
Michael looked at her. He gave her a small, private smile. "Now we have a date on a beach, and a whole summer ahead of us. All we have to do is figure out how to get off the island."
She stirred. "I know where Astra's canoe is. She told me."
"Not that little bark canoe." He groaned. "It'll barely hold my weight, let alone take the both of us."
"Astra told me about it for a reason," Mary told him. "I think it will be okay."
He looked at Nicholas. "I presume you arrived after Astra blew up all the other boats."
"Yes, I'm moored at the south end of the island," Nicholas said. He blew out a breath as he looked around the clearing. "I was going to stay and clean up here."
Mary looked around. The cabin fire still burned energetically and bodies littered the clearing. She slumped. "We'll stay and help."
Nicholas touched her shoulder. "It's okay," he said gently. "I want you to go. I could use some time to myself."
"Are you sure?" Michael asked.
Nicholas nodded. "When you get to the mainland, just call my dad and let him know I'm-Jamie-is okay."
"We will," Michael promised.
Michael did indeed know where Astra kept the canoe and he led the way. Nicholas came along with them. They found a small, anxious fox sitting in the canoe. Nicholas clucked soothingly at the animal as he scooted it into his arms.
"I haven't seen you for a while, little man." He scratched the fox behind its ear, then set it on the ground, and it stayed close to his feet.
Nicholas turned to Mary and held out his arms. She went readily into them and hugged him as tightly as she could. He whispered in her ear, "If I had a s...o...b..ll's chance in h.e.l.l with you, I would give him a run for his money. Don't let the b.a.s.t.a.r.d take you for granted."
She smiled and grew teary. "I won't. Take care of yourself, will you?"
"You too." He brushed his lips against her cheek, her mouth. Then he let her go and stepped back.
She turned to Michael to find him watching them both, his mouth drawn into a thin, jealous line. She said, "Oh, don't even be that way."
He c.o.c.ked an eyebrow, then seemed to make a decision and throttled back. "Fine."
He climbed into the canoe and guided her as she climbed in too. Mary settled between his legs. The water came to just below the canoe's rim.
"Do you know how many miles it is to Beaver Island, let alone the mainland?" Michael asked. "With the canoe riding this low in the water we're going to get exactly three yards."
She glanced at Nicholas who stood nearby with his hands on his hips, watching. Even the angle of the fox's ears was doubtful.
The eastern horizon had grown lighter with the promise of a new dawn. The northern horizon was smudged with clouds of ash, but elsewhere, the sky was crystal clear and the stars were fading. It was going to be a beautiful day.
Mary took a deep, cleansing breath of fresh air as she looked around. Astra sent us here for a reason, she thought. And the Lake likes me.
Well, it couldn't hurt to ask.
She leaned forward, stared into the black water and whispered, "Excuse me. h.e.l.lo, Lake?"
Epilogue.
ONE NIGHT IN late August, Nicholas had a dream.
He had buried all the bodies from the battle on the island. Then he had worked to clear away the debris from the cabin fire.
When the clearing was readied, he spent the long, hot summer days building a new house. Now the frame was finished, and some of the flooring, but he had a lot to do before it would be ready for winter.
He reveled in the hard, physical work. Through it, he grew acquainted with the young, strong body that he had been given, and it filled out the promise of power in his wide shoulders. It also helped to heal the parts of him that needed healing.
In his dream, he lounged in the shade of his new porch, watching the small corner of the world that he had claimed for himself. Even though it was morning, the day was turning into a scorcher. The fox lay at his feet, panting like a dog.
Mary walked up the path. She wore sungla.s.ses, and she was tanned to a warm honey brown. A tangle of thick, layered, wavy hair floated around her slender shoulders. She was casually dressed in cutoff jeans, a hot pink tank top with spaghetti straps and matching pink flip-flops. Her toes were painted a bright pink too.
Pleasure welled in Nicholas. When he had first met Mary, she had been too thin, her face carved from stress. Now she was a healthy weight and vibrant with color. As she approached, he rose to his feet and put his arms around her in a tight hug.
He said, "I know I'm dreaming, but it's still good to see you."
She laughed. "It may be a dream, but that doesn't make it less real. Michael is teaching me how to do it." She pulled her sungla.s.ses down her nose to look at him with bright aquamarine blue eyes. "I've been thinking a lot about you. How are you?"
He nodded. "It took me a while, but I'm good. I needed to be alone to think. I've made peace with what we did, and I've thanked Jamie for the immense gift he gave me."
"I'm so glad to hear that." She tilted her head up to look at the house. "This is amazing. How many bedrooms is it?"
"Four," he said. "I always wanted to build my own house but never had the time, so I've gone a bit overboard. The island is never going to stop cloaking itself from the outside world, and it's not like I'll have many visitors here. There's a lot of work still to do, but I'll have it insulated and ready for winter."
"It's beautiful," she told him. "How are Jerry and Sara?"
"They are doing okay." He gestured an invitation for her to join him on the porch, and she climbed the steps to sit on the swing beside him. "Sara doesn't know. She thinks Jamie is working in Marquette for the summer. I call her every week, and we talk. It makes her happy. My dad suspects something, but he hasn't said anything yet, and neither have I." He took a deep breath. "I have to decide soon what I'm going to do about that. For now I'm being who I need to be, and I'm letting them call me Jamie because that's what they need to call me."
Her expression shadowed with compa.s.sion. "I'm sorry, that's so hard."
Gently, he echoed the words that she had said to him months ago. "It will be all right." They sat for a while in companionable silence. Then he asked, "How are you and Michael?"
"We're good," she said, giving him a quick smile. "We're better than good. We're happy, and we're not afraid. There's no longer any war on our horizon. We're actually talking about getting pregnant."
"I'm very happy for you both," he said. "Where did you decide to go?"
"We're in Puerto Rico for now and taking things easy. I'm reading a lot. He's tinkering with cars. We may settle there permanently, but neither one of us feels the need to make any long-term decisions in a hurry."
Nicholas looked across the clearing. He heard himself say, "You're never coming back to the continental U.S., are you?"
She shook her head. "I don't think so. Our descriptions have been too publicized. We could have plastic surgery to change our appearances, but . . ." She shrugged. "Neither one of us feels the need to do that. What about you? Have you made any plans?"
"Actually, I have made plans," he said. He gave her an easy smile. "I'm going to finish my house, and I'm probably going to have a talk with my father. Then I have a murderer to catch. Someone killed me, and I'm going to find out who that was. And after that, I'm going to start hunting drones."
There was war on his horizon, and he was at peace with that.
Mary put a hand over his. "Please promise me you'll be careful."
"I will." He raised her hand to his lips. "Don't worry about me. You concentrate on being happy."
"We are." She turned to look in the distance. "Michael is calling me. I need to go." She smiled at him. "May I dream with you again from time to time, to make sure you're okay?"
He stood when she did. "I would love to see you again."
She hugged him and looked deep into his gaze. For a moment, Nicholas saw a flash of something alien in those jeweled eyes, something ancient and radiant. Then he blinked, and the image was gone.
"You should get out of the heat," she told him. "And I really must go. Be well, Nicholas."
"And you."
He watched as Mary slipped off her flip-flops and raced barefoot down the path. A few moments later, a slim, white boat pulled out of the bay.
Nicholas lifted his hand in a wave, just in case either Michael or Mary could see him. Then he went inside the house to cool off.
