“Miss, it’s Mr Gu on the phone…” The housekeeper told Qin Zhi Ai as she lifted Qin Zhi Ai’s hand to her ear.

Before Qin Zhi Ai had the chance to say h.e.l.lo into the handset, she heard Gu Yu Sheng’s cold and impatient voice from the receiver, “No need to pa.s.s her the phone. I didn’t call to talk to her. I only wanted to tell you to help me ask her how much the doctor’s fee was yesterday. The ‘h.e.l.lo’ at Qin Zhi Ai’s lips was instantly lodged down her throat. She was somewhat unsure of how to respond to the words he had intended for the housekeeper.

Gu Yu Sheng on the other end, after waiting but not receiving a response appeared to have realised who was currently on the phone. His tone turned even colder, “I’m sure you heard what I just said. Tell the housekeeper the amount and get her to tell me.”

Qin Zhi Ai held the receiver, and after a momentary daze, put it down.

Seeing her put down the phone, the housekeeper immediately said with a huge smile, “Miss, what did Mr Gu talk to you about? This is possibly the first time he has ever rung to ask about how you are. From the looks of it, it isn’t that Mr Gu doesn’t care about you…”

“Let’s eat.” Qin Zhi Ai indifferently interrupted the housekeeper’s words and walked towards the dining room.

The truth was, when she came down the stairs and heard the housekeeper reporting to him about her condition, she was a little happy. Like the housekeeper, she thought that he was concerned about her…… But, that wasn’t the case……. He simply wanted to return her doctor’s fee, to draw a clearer boundary line between them. Nothing more.

Possibly because she had had too many dreams of the past, while she was eating, Qin Zhi Ai’s mind kept drifting away, and she would, every now and again, recall what happened afterwards.

The events that took place after that were a lot simpler than her dreams.

After they parted that day, she didn’t see Gu Yu Sheng for a full four years. She didn’t know where he went and didn’t know what he was doing.

She would sometimes take a stroll around the neighbourhood of the Gu Family’s old residence but never had the luck to run into him.

Four years later, the reason she was able to see him was because his parents had pa.s.sed away. She heard the news from Xu Wen Nuan. Of course, Xu Wen Nuan had found out from Wu Hao. Gu Yu Sheng’s father had killed his mother and then committed suicide by taking poison.

She was already studying at university then and had gone to Shanghai to partic.i.p.ate in a social gathering. After she found out that he was attending the burial in Beijing, she rushed back to Beijing that very night to see him.

The Gu Family was a big family and their business was large as well. There were too many people. With her quiet and poor background and her un.o.btrusiveness, there was no way she could enter the Gu Residence. She kept watch outside the doors of the residence, staking outside for three days and three nights, but only managed to catch one glimpse of him from afar. After that, two years pa.s.sed before she saw him again.

She had the fortune to attend an evening charity event with her post-graduate supervisor.

By lucky coincidence, he was there that day as well. He wore a custom-made black suit, paired with the simplest white s.h.i.+rt, his collar neat and tidy, cuffs tightly b.u.t.toned. He looked elegant and n.o.ble.

He was surrounded by many high officials and big shots. Just like his parent’s funeral, there was no way for her to approach him.

It wasn’t until she went to the restroom and came out that she saw that he was no longer surrounded and was talking to a man. She stood far away and greedily took him in, wanting to use her eyes to recover the six missed years.  After that, not knowing where the courage came from, she made a beeline towards him.

There were so many things she wanted to ask him. How he had been the past few years? Does he have a girlfriend? Ask him…… In the end, those thousands of things she wanted to ask, became a single question. That year, why didn’t you come to our date?
