“Mrs Gu?” Lu Ban Cheng responded in confusion. A short while later,  he shot Gu Yu Sheng a glance as if he had realised something, and turned to Ms Lu for confirmation, “Liang Dou Kou?”

“That’s right. Miss Liang.” Ms Lu lightly nodded and looked around again. Not catching sight of Liang Dou Kou anywhere, she spoke again. “Mr Gu, did you send Mrs Gu back home and then come again?”

“No, Mrs Zhang. Are you certain you’re talking about Liang Dou Kou? Sheng-ge has been here the entire afternoon. He hasn’t taken even one step outside.” Lu Ban Cheng head had become a bit muddled by Ms Lu’s words.

“Huh? Chief Gu didn’t go pick up Mrs Gu? Then how is Mrs Gu going to get back to town?” It was Ms Lu’s turned to be startled this time.

Lu Ban Cheng was plunged into deeper confusion. “Why can’t Liang Dou Kou get back to town? Just what is going on?”

“We were at the Gold Corner Hot Springs in the north suburbs this afternoon. Mrs Gu didn’t come in her own car. When the gathering was over, it happened to be raining very hard. Mrs Gu said that Chief Gu would be coming to pick her up. Mrs Gu was still there when I left, so when I saw Chief Gu I thought that Chief Gu had brought Mrs Gu here. But now, after so many hours, I’ve found out that Chief Gu never actually went to pick Mrs Gu up. It’s raining so hard, it’s definitely going to be difficult to call a car over to the outer suburbs and we don’t even know if Mrs Gu is back yet or not.”

Gu Yu Sheng heard every bit of Lu Ban Cheng’s conversation with Ms Lu loud and clear. However, his expression was calm from start to finish, without the slightest ripple, as if the person they were discussing had absolutely nothing to do with him.

Seeing Gu Yu Sheng’s expression, at first, Mrs Lu wanted to say something. However, Lu Ban Cheng, who was sitting next to Gu Yu Sheng flashed her a look, and she sensibly closed her mouth. She stood on the side for a while, and seeing that Gu Yu Sheng hadn’t made any reaction, she originally wanted to say two more lines. But, after a second thought, she gathered that it wasn’t good to interfere too much in someone else’s family’s matter and in the end let out a sigh and left.

Outside, the rain continued to violently hammer down, gales of wind tore across, and droplets of rain slapped against the French window like a drum.

After finis.h.i.+ng one game, Lu Ban Cheng turned his head slightly, and examined Gu Yu Sheng from the corner of his eye.

Gu Yu Sheng was holding his phone, still as silent as ever. It was unknown what he was playing but, no worry or nervousness could be seen on his indifferent countenance.

Lu Ban Cheng moved his lips, looking as if he wanted to say something but stopping himself. He didn’t say anything in the end.

After another game concluded, while they were shuffling the tiles, a bolt of lightning swept past, illuminating the dark night to daytime, closely followed by another ear-splitting boom of thunder.

Lu Ban Cheng knitted his brows and turned to look at Gu Yu Sheng who was nonchalantly lighting a cigarette. Finally unable to restrain himself any longer, he said in a low voice, “How about you give her a call, see if she’s gotten home safely or not?”
