After the cla.s.s was finished, I cast Blood Magic on myself and dashed from the training area outside the cla.s.sroom toward the library building. If someone were to collide into me during this time, I'm pretty sure it'll be a roadkill, so everyone, please take extra care.
The library is a common s.p.a.ce for everyone from the elementary school until the high school department.
So that means even an elementary schooler like me could look up about magic taught in high school! Neat!
The thing I'm interested in right now is about brain manipulation.
We can use Blood Magic to fiddle with the brain, so there's a chance for me to create the ideal magic that I'd need.
But still, the handling of the brain was so complicated that I couldn't quite find the right book for it. So for now, I noted down important parts about how to use Blood Magic to fiddle with the brain and combine them together.
If I do that, I would be able to understand the Bachelor, Master's or Doctorate theses later on when I need to. If I need to read the theses, I'd need to know the prerequisite knowledge after all.
Speaking of basics, I'm also still learning about the basics of Blood Magic.
When I was four, the literature about Blood Magic that Wolf-sensei gave me was mostly about learning its sensation, but now that I have the opportunity to access these literature frequently, I want to properly learn about the theories behind Blood Magic.
I could freely research about Elemental Magic during cla.s.s time as much as I want, so I'll shelf it for now.
Blood magic.
Formerly, it was truly a magic that are based on Blood, just like its t.i.tle implies. It was a magic curse that uses blood as its medium. It was an abhorred magic that could be used to opponents to go mad, break opponent's body, or straight up cover one's surrounding in blood.
But before long, it was developed and lose its reputation as a curse. It could be used as a healing magic and enhance physical strength. It lost its status as a dark magic and turned into something brilliant.
Fundamental number 1:
Blood magic must use one's blood as a medium or the target must be in contact, otherwise it would not activate. The rule also applies if you are to cast Blood Magic upon other people. That's why when Wolf-sensei used Blood Magic on me, he would hold my hand.
Fundamental number 2:
Blood Magic is a magic that uses the mana circulating in the flesh—or rather, in the blood. Circulating mana is like what I use to fire my gun, but blood is a great conductor of mana, so if you can control 1/500 of your mana in water, you can do it easily if it's within your body.
…when I heard about this, I talked with uncle Gnome about coating the firing pin with blood, but it was bluntly rejected. I ain't gonna make such disgusting stuff! he said…
Fundamental number 3:
Blood Magic can be cancelled with Blood Magic.
This is extremely important
Blood Magic can create barriers to protect oneself, and with that, as long the opponent's technique doesn't far exceed your own, your Blood Magic can defend your body against external alteration.
The moment I laid my eyes upon this, I've dedicated myself to study about this category.
I mean, I could be unparalleled just by using modern weapons, but if my opponents were to attack my body directly using Blood Magic, I wouldn't be able to endure it. I wouldn't want that. If I could finish the creation of the technology that I thought of, I won't be worried about swords or arrows, but I would still be defeated if I got attacked by Blood Magic from G.o.d knows where.
That's why, I've completed my own Blood Magic protection~ Ya~y! On top of the fundamental blood magic, if someone were to touch me and cast Blood Magic, it would reflect the magic back to the caster. So I guess it's similar to Offensive Barrier? Hmm. I don't hate cyberpunk anyways.
I want to test it, but I can't find a suitable opponent.
The kids in the elementary school department haven't even been taught to read properly, and I'd feel bad for bothering Wolf-sensei. I guess I could just search for some free teacher to cast a light Blood Magic on me.
“You,”
As I was reading the books and fiddled with Blood Magic, someone called out to me.
“You're from the elementary school department, right? Do you even understand that book?”
They were three onii-sans who was wearing uniforms of the High School department.
“I know a bit. I don't understand perfectly though. A normal person like me is yet to understand such knowledge.”
“H-Haa…”
You can't be haughty, Astrid. I have to be humble. Being full of yourself is only going to erect the flag of destruction.
“Then let us ask you a question then. Who is the first person who accomplished a curse with Blood Magic?”
Oh my. Are these onii-sans planning to have fun bullying a little elementary schooler?
“Elias von Engelhart. In the year 1012 in the Continenal Calendar, he used his blood for Blood Magic to a.s.sa.s.sinate the twelfth Pfalz Kurfürst, Maximilian I. It was an a.s.sa.s.sination carried out in the reign of the Prussian emperor of that time, Leopold I who wanted to unite the Northern Reich. The Blood Magic used back then hardens the blood inside the body, and thus right now we mention it as a forbidden curse. Am I correct?”
Fufun. I was studying Humanities before, so I'm good at remembering history.
“Huh? Was Maximilian I the one a.s.sa.s.sinated? I answered Otto II in my test though…”
“Yeah that too was a historic a.s.sa.s.sination, but it wasn't the first case where someone was a.s.sa.s.sinated with Blood Magic. Just like the elementary schooler said, it was Elias who used it against Maximilian I.”
Was my answer the correct one in the test? My condolences for the mistaken onii-san.
“Hey, hey, but who's the famous person who first discovered Blood Magic for restorative purpose and expanded on it?”
“Joseph Junger. During the war in 1214 in the Continental Calendar, he invented the restorative use from Blood Magic when he provided cure for an amputated person. After that, the technique spreads out to the world, and Blood Magic is recognized as something that could be used for restorative purposes. Today, the researcher Junger Schleiden got his name from Joseph Junger.”
I wish I could also remember about restorative magic. Wolf-sensei told me about restorative magic to heal myself if I got a cut wound, but maybe I'll be hurt even worse when I got into the showdown with my fate.
“Awesome. You got everything correct. Are you really an elementary schooler?”
“Yes I am.”
Learning about history is fun after all, so I inadvertently digressed on and on about history. Even though actually want to increase the effect of Blood Magic and implement that along with Elemental Magic to recreate modern weapons…
“Ah, if I recall by that red hair of yours, are you Duke Oldenburg's…?”
“Yes. My name is Astrid. I am pleased to make your acquaintances, senpais.”
So they knew me from my red hair, huh. I mean, my hair is really red. It really stand out.
“That's why. The rumors said that Duke Oldenburg's daughter was a genius in magic after all.”
Huh? Has the rumor gotten that big? It's the first time I heard about it though?
“If it's fine with you, can you help me with this a.s.signment? We couldn't solve this by ourselves.”
“I-It's alright with me. In exchange, I have something to ask you, can I?”
I didn't think that I'd also have to look after students from the High School department.
But this is a good chance. I know what the high school students are studying after all. Also—
“Can you cast some light Blood Magic with noticeable effects on me? Like make me sneeze, make me shed tears, or something like that.”
“Huh?”
In response to my words, the senpais looked at me with their mouths hanging open.
“I could make you sneeze, but is that really okay?”
“Of course. I wanted to test my protective barrier, but please be careful, okay? It might be reflected back to you.”
Alright. Now I could test the practical use of the protective barrier.
“Okay, just lightly, right?”
Senpai held my hand and cast his Blood Magic.
Oh? I can feel another person's mana entering my body. What would happen now?
“ACHOO!”
The high schooler senpai who casted Blood Magic at me sneezed loudly.
“W-What was that barrier? It got reflected back to me!”
“It's my specially-made Blood Barrier. Very well, now that you have fulfilled my task, so I will help with your a.s.signment. Where should I start?”
Offensive barrier is complete!
But I can't be careless. Maybe a higher level Blood Magic could pierce through it.
I have to train it every day.
As I thought of that, I took a peek at the senpais' a.s.signments.
Hm, hm. So even high schoolers also need to learn about history, huh. Not that I mind, it's the subject I'm good at after all. The calculation of potential total mana and mana output are science subjects though.
Now this is hard.
I used what I learned from Wolf-sensei and what I learned by myself to help the High School senpais' a.s.signments.
“Astrid-sama, Astrid-sama,” Miine-kun said, rus.h.i.+ng over toward me like a puppy.
I think I've gotten along well with her, but she still calls me with reservation.
“What is it?”
“Have you heard of the rumors about the Princess of the Library?”
Princess of the Library? I've been going to the library every day but I've never seen anyone like that.
Hah! Is this possibly…!
“Miine, I'm really bad with scary stories, so please spare me.”
“Eh? It's not a ghost story!”
Huuh? I was sure that it's going to be a story like in the library at night,…or something.
“It seems like there is a beautiful, wise person in the library. Her wisdom is sought even by the bachelors, and she possesses such beauty that everyone would only call her a Princess. I don't really go to the library that much, but it seems like there is such person over there.”
“Hmmm. I go there every day, but I haven't seen someone like that at all, you know? Isn't it a false rumor?”
If there actually is someone who is that beautiful and wise, I'd be friends with her by now.
“Is that so? If at all possible, I would love to meet that person once.”
“Then do you want to come to the library with me? I don't think there's someone like that though.”
The library is my turf. If there is someone like a Princess there, I would've been able to immediately sense her presence.
“Is that okay? Am I not going to bother you?”
“No, it's okay, it's okay. That library had such an amazing collection of books, so I don't think you would be bored. There are also some introductory books about magic for elementary school students and some novels if you like. I think it'll be good for you if you visit the library sometimes. It's a very fun place.”
That library had such impressive collections of books that I couldn't even compare it with the library of my old schools. There are even picture books for younger kids, and there are also higher-level books for people in the high-school department and even university.
Well, the only thing that wasn't there is supposedly the princess.
“Alright, how about we go in the next break? Looks like you are not very good at Wind elementals, Miine, so I'll introduce you to some books about Wind elementals that are easy to understand.”
“Hawa! Thank you very much!”
When I was taught about magic by Wolf-sensei, I borrowed and read a lot of books anyways, so there are a lot of books that I could tell to other people. I don't hate reading books after all. But math books are exceptions. I fear no man. But that thing. It scares me.
With that said, I went with Miine-kun to the library, but we didn't find the Princess of the Library. Like always, I helped some senpais from the High School section with their a.s.signments, and in return, they would tell me about their lessons in cla.s.s and I could learn about Blood Magic.
As I had expected, rumors are not to be trusted.
“She doesn't exist, right? That Princess of the Library?”
“Wawawa…! T-That's right…”
For some reson, Miine-kun's cheeks reddened as she sees me.
You can't be cheating, Miine-kun. You're supposed to be with Adolf. Concentrate in learning that elementary Wind-elemental book.
Chapter 18 >TLN:
Pfalz Kurfürst (Palatinatian/Pfalz Elector. Palatinate is a region, and Elector is a position) is an elector of the Holy Roman Empire. They are members of the electoral college whose job is to elect the Holy Roman Emperor.
Some of these names are accurate to a certain degree. Maximilian I (not to be confused by Maximilian I Joseph) was the elector of Bayern (Bavaria), who later conquered the upper Palatinate region. I haven't studied history before the second World War so I don't know why there are English names for everything.
Maximilian I is occasionally called “the Great”, but the second s.h.i.+p of König-cla.s.s battles.h.i.+p Großer Kurfürst (Great Elector) doesn't refer to him, but it refers to Frederich Wilhelm I, Elector of Brandenburg. A lot of people back then were called “the great”, huh. You don't need to know this information, but I'm writing it anyways. Because I like s.h.i.+ps.
That Offensive Barrier “Cyberpunk” thing she talked about is not referring to Keanu “Best Waifu” Reeves, it's a reference to a computer security system in Ghost in the Sh.e.l.l series. I don't know, you tell me. I never watched it.
Sorry for the late update. Still working on some stuff. Have a good day!
