A wild new girl appeared! ( `・ω・´)
I found this novel and got intrigued by it.
The novel's main story had already finished but the author is still updating extra stories for this.
It's called ‘‘ by 第616特別情報大隊 (616-sensei). The protagonist of this novel is Astrid-Sophie von Oldenburg (a.k.a. Astrid from here on) who is reincarnated as a villainess in an Otome Game called ‘Wis.h.i.+ng Upon A Star'. She reminds me of Tanya von Degurechaff from Youjo Senki (The Saga of Tanya The Evil) who is one of my favorite characters. ( `・ω・´)
In short, she's ruthless (that was what I got from the first two chapters).
The first two chapters were already translated by Haylias-san from . I recommend you to check those out.
And a wild new translator (and he's better than me) has appeared too! Say h.e.l.lo to Astherfeld-san! ( `・ω・´)
A word from the actual TL:
Greetings; Astherfeld Cryomorph reporting in. Since I bet you all are here for the chapter and not…this, I'll keep it short. I'll be translating this series on a regular basis. I can't promise a quick timely update, but I can at least promise one chapter per week. Unless it's something very important, I'll put these TL notes (if there'll be any) at the end of the chapter from the next chapter onwards so you don't have to read it if you don't want to.
I hope you enjoy the chapter as well as your day.
Chapter 3: The Villainess and the This and That of MagicI learned a lot from the sorcery book given by Wolf-sensei.
First of all, magic is the power of imagination. Even money can be produced if you can imagine it.
As a result, gold is worthless in this world, and Orihalcon, a mineral that absolutely can't be produced, is used as a coin. Orichalcon worth 1 mark in this country weighs 4.8 grams, about the same as a 100 yen coin.
Leaving that discussion aside, let's note down what we have learned.
If you want to put a little fire, imagine a spark of flint……I wonder if I can just imagine the flames of a match instead.
If you want to conjure a bit of water, you can imagine water pouring out of a jug. Furthermore, the temperature of the water seems to be freely adjustable. Well, I can't think of weapons using water, but I know a weapon that can benefit from the usefulness of the temperature changes.
The heat quant.i.ty of the flame can be adjusted by imagination. To create a flame of ultrhigh temperature, just imagine the flame. Unfortunately, no matter how much I read the books given by Wolf-sensei, I can't find anything regarding sticky flames. It seems like I can't easily make flamethrowers or napalm bombs, huh….
Finally, if you use magic too much, it will affect your life. If your magic is drained, your physical strength will decline significantly, and in the worst case it will lead to death.
You must understand this point well. Although I have very high potential magic, it is not infinite. If I one day decide to stand against the Prussian Empire, I'll have to fight with many soldiers. At that time, I'll have to manage magic.
It seems that I can check the remaining amount of magic I have by wearing a birthstone. Every time my magic is used, the birthstone gradually loses its brilliance, and it will break when I run out. Though I don't want that to happen.
Now! As preparation is perfect, it is cla.s.s with Wolf-sensei today!
Wolf: “H-have you read all of the books?”
When I returned the book I had borrowed from Wolf-sensei, he stared at me wide-eyed.
Astrid: “Yes! The basics are written in a way that it's easy to understand, so I read it smoothly!”
Even for a beginner in magic like me, the content of Wolf-sensei's book smoothly flows into my head. It became a review of what I learned in my first cla.s.s, and my knowledge of magic has deepened. I should've expected this from Wolf-sensei. He does have the degree for this, so the choice of book he gave me was perfect.
Wolf: “Yes. Astrid-sama is wise, so you're also studious. In the future, you may be able to get a degree at St. Satanaquia Magic Academy as I do.”
Wolf-sensei's happiness is heartwarming. I bet he's happy that he's getting a junior.
Wolf: “Now, Astrid-sama. Let's move on to today's cla.s.s. You've read about magic cards, right?”
Astrid: “Yes. It's a tool that can invoke magic without imagining it.”
Magicians are also combatants in this world. They fight amongst flying arrows, slung stones and soldiers advancing on them with swords.
At that point, if you have to imagine every spell one by one, you'll either end up dying from being shanked by an arrow from a bow, smacked by a stone from a sling or slayed by a sword.
So, all of the combat magicians who fight on the harsh battlefield have created a way to invoke magic without imagining them one-by-one,
And that is by using magic card.
Wolf: “The magic card allows you to invoke a magic you cast once, without having to imagine it, but the magic card itself is disposable and burns out once you use it once. Even so, if you prepared enough amount of them, you can invoke magic successively without having to imagine them.”
Yes, magic cards are disposable.
I bet combat magicians have to diligently make magic cards before battle. It is plain, but I can't really make fun of it since it allows them to deliver a response that can challenge both swords and arrows.
Wolf: “So, let's actually make magic cards.”
Astrid: “Yes!”
So, Wolf-sensei and I went outdoors again.
Since I've learned that my magic power is tremendous, we decided to practice not in the garden of our our house, but in the open field near a ranch, some distance away from the house
Wolf: “So, let's start by teaching you how to make magic cards. The material of magic cards is paper mixed with a maiden's hair. We will use this as a material to make magic cards.”
Papermaking technology already exists in this world, which makes the book easy to read.
Wolf: “I've prepared the ingredients here, please take one.”
Astrid: “Thank you.”
The kind Wolf-sensei had already this for my cla.s.s piece of paper for magic cards. I bet it isn't free, so I felt thankful.
Wolf: “Now, hold that card and try invoking a magic. Water, fire, wind, earth. Either elemental magic can be used.”
Astrid: “Okay. Fire!”
I truly am impressed with this power.
I imagine a fire. Not a flashy one, but a fire like those from the hearth.
After thus, a blazing flame appeared with just the right amount of firepower.
Wolf: “Take a look at the magic cards.”
Astrid: “Let's see…”
On the magic card that was empty when I checked before, there was a rune letter engraved there.
Astrid: “Is this complete?”
Wolf: “Yes. It's done. Next time, let's use the magic card.”
It's so easy. I thought I had to do some sort of ceremony or something.
Wolf: “Hold your magic card and pour your magic into it. Can you do it?”
Astrid: “Pour my magic?”
How do you pour your magic? The book didn't explain that.
Wolf: “Simply bring up the power from inside your heart; you don't have to strain yourself too much. Hold the magic card and imagine a liquid pouring sensation from your heart into the card.”
Astrid: “Imagine pouring liquid from the heart…”
I tried imagining as how Wolf-sensei told me.
Then the magic card burns, and in front of you is the flame that I invoked earlier.
So this is a magic card! So convenient!
Wolf: “By the way, magic cards can be activated without holding them in hand. Try making another magic card and put it far away from you.”
As Wolf-sensei said, I imagined the flame again, made a magic card out of it and put it about 500 meters away.
Wolf: “Now, let's pour the magic as we did earlier, but this time in the image of pouring it far away”
I imagine pouring magic on distant magic cards in the same way as before.
Far away…far away… Imagine a sense of pouring into a magic card 500 meters away.
Then, in the distance, the blazing sound of the flames resounded, and looking forward, the magic card placed in the distance was burning with the flame I imagined earlier.
Astrid: “Wow! I did it!”
Wolf: “Yes, well done. After that, if you can speed up the flow of magic, it's perfect. This channeling speed is already quick. My other students don't have this talent of yours.”
Oh! I'm getting good scores! I did it!
According to the book, it seems impossible to activate other people's magic cards. If you could, then n.o.body would feel safe using magic cards.
Astrid: “By the way, Wolf-sensei. I have something I want to try, so can I try it?”
Wolf: “Since today's lesson of the magic cards ended up earlier than expected, go ahead.”
Nice. Since we got the teacher's permission, let's do it.
So I start imagining. I imagined an explosion akin to the propellant gunpowder of an ammunition of an automatic rifle. In short, I imagined a small but powerful explosion. It's kind of hard, but I imagined the day I went shooting in the range in Guam.
And then with a loud, rumbling BAM, a small explosion happened in front of my eye.
Wolf: “Huh? Did the fire spirit allows you to invoke an explosion magic? It's small, but what a magnificent image you have. I mean, you don't usually see explosions in your daily life.”
Astrid: “Umm…I saw it in a dream!”
I wonder how long I can use this dream of mine as an excuse.
Astrid: “I also want to try a little more, can I borrow more magic cards?”
Wolf: “I've prepared them for your lessons, so go ahead.”
What generosity. Wolf-sensei is a good teacher.
Astrid: “Here we go,”
I engraved the image of the explosion onto the magic card and set it aside for a while.
Then I conveyed the image of lead and plastic onto the Earth spirit, letting him deal with the complex corrections to conjure the item I'm looking for.
And the thing I'm looking for is…
Wolf: “What's that?”
Astrid: “This is a 12 gauge slug sh.e.l.l. It's used for hunting.”
Although I'll use it on humans too.
Well then. Slug sh.e.l.ls is a type of shotgun ammunition that shoots a single projectile instead of a buckshot. In the army, they're mostly used to breach open locked door handles to allow infiltration.
Astrid: “Then I'll stuff this magic tag into the finished slug cartridge …”
And so I continued my work with excitement.
Astrid: “There we go!”
Thus, the first bullet in the world is made.
Wolf: “How do you…use it?”
Astrid: “This is how,”
Wolf-sensei asked suspiciously, whereas I simply loaded the sh.e.l.l into the shotgun that I've been holding on my back, and as I did, I got really excited. After that, I pointed the gun toward a wooden board that serves as a suitable target and pulled the trigger while pouring my magical power.
Again, with a ear-rending sound, the shotgun fired the slug. The wooden board that ate the 12-gauge lead bullet swung as a large hole opened.
On the other hand, the me who couldn't withstand the shotgun's recoil almost tumbled over.
Wolf: “Oh…this is new…”
Wolf-sensei who was looking at the wooden target sounds impressed.
Astrid: “Ow…my arms and my shoulders…”
Obviously being something that wasn't supposed to be handled by a 4-year-old, the shotgun's kick stings my shoulders.
Astrid: “But I did it! Success!”
With a little magic power, I brought forth something a lot more efficient than normal magic.
This efficiency is good. For example if you want to create a huge fireball, creating the magic card is a labor, and controlling it would be difficult. This shotgun has overcome that difficulty, since all you need is a small amount of magic to make magic cards and the sh.e.l.l.
Wolf: “Is that how you use that shotgun?”
Astrid: “Yes. I still can't handle it tho-”
Wait, hold on. There should be a way to allow a 4-year-old to freely control a shotgun.
Astrid: “Wolf-sensei! Teach me about Blood Magic!”
Yes, you can withstand the kick by boosting your physical abilities with Blood Magic!
Wolf: “Blood Magic, huh….It's outside of my area of expertise, but do you understand that there are some risks to using it?”
Astrid: “Of course!”
Who am I to complain? I just want to be able to shoot freely.
……Hm? Was my purpose only to spray away with my guns?
Wolf: “Alright then, let me teach you about Blood Magic”
Wolf-sensei decided to teach me so with a serious look like never before.
Wolf: “Let's start with simple physical ability enhancement.”
As Wolf-sensei said that, he picked up a stone that was lying on the ground.
Wolf: “The basics are the same as Elemental Magic, but you can't think too much, because if you do something crazy, your body will be affected by its reaction.”
I see, so I shouldn't imagine something crazy.
Wolf: “If you want to enhance the strength of your hand, imagine that your hands are full of power, and then imagine that magic power is circulating in your body. Same as when you activate your card, but instead of a card, circulate your magic into your body.
When Wolf said that, he clasped his hand.
Wolf: “Humph!” The stone held by Wolf-sensei shattered.
Wolf: “Do you want to try it?”
Astrid: “Of course!”
Here we go. From today onwards, I'm also a superhuman.
Wolf: “Well then, how about you try to enhance your lower body, Astrid-sama? If you can increase your running speed, you'll probably feel the effectiveness.”
Astrid: “Yes!”
I wanted to strengthen my upper body first, but it is best for the amateur to listen to what the pro says. So then, let's challenge! (TLN: Let's Challenge is spoken in broken English)
I imagine a feeling where my legs are br.i.m.m.i.n.g with power.
Horse-like muscles. An athlete's muscular firm feet. A dash like running through the sky.
And so I circulated my magic to my legs. It's not so difficult now thatI understand how to manipulate magic with magic cards. I circulate the magical power to my lower body and I feel that the lower body is filled with magical power.
Wolf: “Are you ready?”
Astrid: “Perfectly!”
Right now I'm Hop, Step, Carl Lewis! (TLN: If you live under a rock like I am, this man used to be an…athletic sprinter? and long-jump champion)
Wolf: “Now, try and run to that fence. Please run as usual to see how much your physical ability has improved. You didn't imagine something crazy, right?”
Astrid: “Only to the extent of human's capability!”
Come on, let's dash, let's dash. Show off the power of Blood Magic and others.
Wolf: “Well then, please try running”
Astrid: “Yes!”
I run.
My body is light. Light as a feather. I can feel that my feet kick the ground with incredible strength. And by the time I realized, the fence that was really far away was already in front of my eye. I ran incredibly fast!
Astrid: “Wolf-sensei! Did I pa.s.s?”
Wolf: “Are you alright? Is there wrong with your body?”
While I was being excited, Wolf-sensei asked with uneasily
Astrid: “There's nothing wrong, you know? I mean, I don't feel any pain?”
Wolf: “Just in case, let me check your body with my Blood Magic. I didn't expect you to be able to show this much power to fulfill that last challenge…wait, no, knowing Astrid-sama, this would completely be possible, huh?”
As Wolf-sensei touched my hand, I noticed his face was rather pale.
Huh? Did you do something to me?
Wolf: “There is nothing wrong with the muscles. The internal magic is also safely discharged. Haa…I'm glad that there's nothing wrong. But please be careful. Blood Magic can be the poison and the cure.”
Astrid: “I'm sorry……”
I feel sorry that I made him worry too much.
Astrid: “By the way, Wolf-sensei, about enhancement of the upper body-”
Wolf: “Blood magic will be done after you learn about magic adjustments. Until then, let's study Elemental Magic.”
Kuh…so Blood Magic is put on hold? It's a long shot for shooting a shotgun huh? (TLN: I'm not sorry for the pun)
Astrid: “Can we possibly negotiate this?”
Wolf: “Nope. Make a mistake in adjusting the magic power and your muscles could turn into a mincemeat you know?”
Wow…It may be a bit scary I think…
Wolf: “If you learn how to adjust your magic with Elemental Magic, we can give this another go. There is still time, so let's keep going steadily.”
Astrid: “Yes, Wolf-sensei”
That's right, haste lays waste, am I right?
Wolf: “Well then, tomorrow, let's have a lesson on magic adjustment. If you are interested in blood magic, please read this book. Notes on elementary Blood Magic is written there. It may be a bit difficult, but if it's Astrid-sama, I bet you can understand it.”
Astrid: “I will do my best to read it.”
And so, today's cla.s.s is over.
I was able to test the weapon I made for the first time, and I learned about Blood Magic; it was a fruitful lesson. Eventually I'd like to be proficient with Blood Magic enough to shoot a shotgun with one hand.
