Xu Moqi sent Ji Xiaotiao to the door of her dormitory. At first Ji Xiaotiao thought he may ask to stay with her. But the gentleman waved to say goodbye to her.
Ji Xiaotiao closed the door and felt a feeling of loss. What’s wrong with me? She refused to think deeply about it.
Coming back to her room, she jumped onto her bed and slipped under the quilt, and she slept with satisfaction.
Next morning, when Ji Xiaotiao entered the living room with her nightgown and tousled hair, she was surprised to see a young man eating bread and drinking milk while sitting on her sofa.
“Ah!” she cried out loudly.
“Why are you here? How did you get in? And why?”
Xu Moqi had more interest in the bread than in her. After a while, he took out a key from his pocket and shook it before her. “Since I was a child, there’s nothing I can’t handle myself.”
Ji Xiaotiao rushed to take the key, but Xu Moqi took it back before she could reach it.
“Where did you get the key to my room?”
“I smiled at the aunt who was in charge of this dorm, and she gave me the key, inviting me to come often to take care of you.”
How could he be so straightforward and brazen? She was wondering how she could get the key back. She didn’t want to have anything more to do with this sharp-tongued boy
While she was at a loss in her confusion, Xu Moqi pointed at the clock on the wall and said, “It is eight already. Don’t you have your part-time job today?”
Then, he heard another scream and saw the girl hurry to the bathroom.
By the time she finished was.h.i.+ng her face, Xu Moqi had left, leaving some bread and milk for her on the tea table. She took the bread and rushed out. She needed the money, so she decided to let the sharp tongue go for now.
She arrived at the fast-food shop, only to find the staff glancing at her conspicuously, as if trying to hint at something. What? Then she saw the familiar figure, sitting at the same place, drinking a milk tea. The sun shone, leaving black shadows on his young and handsome face. She shook her head, accepted her fate with him, and started working.
As with yesterday, the boy accompanied her until she was off duty. When she left, Xu Moqi followed immediately, and they went to the cake store together. Then, following the same routine, he ordered a cake to pa.s.s the time until nine p.m., until seeing her home and leaving.
The day after, the same pattern.
He followed her for a whole week like this. Finally, the weekend came, and she had no work to do. She planned to have a talk with him.
When Xu Moqi entered her room with breakfast, he was stunned to see someone staring at him from the sofa, when he had guessed she’d be sleeping in her bedroom.
“Tell me, Xu Moqi, what are you doing?” She stood up angrily. She saw the breakfast he put on the tea table and crammed a piece of bread into her mouth, finding her anger dissipating in mere moments.
He also took a chair, sat beside her, and started drinking milk like an innocent demon. “Ji Xiaotiao, haven’t you felt something strange recently? Like . . . you were followed or monitored by someone?” His expression had turned serious.
“You?” She thought hard about this question, and this was the only correct answer.
“Let me tell you the truth.” He stood up and spoke in a solemn tone, “Do you remember the men in black from when we met each other? Those are my enemies. I did something wrong to their boss, so they want my life. But they saw you with me that day, so I guess they think we are friends and they followed you.”
Xu Moqi made a grim gesture of slicing his finger across his neck as if it were a blade. It frightened Ji Xiaotiao.
“I’ve been following you until now to protect you from their harmful deeds. Anyway, it isn’t safe for you to live here alone. I was afraid they could enter this room and . . . ”
……
Ji Xiaotiao began to panic. What if what he said was true and she’d become entangled in this mess?
He realized she was still harboring some doubts, thus he coughed lightly and asked her to check out the window. “Take a look outside. You will find them downstairs.”
Ji Xiaotiao bounced up. Dare they come in broad daylight? She hurried to the window and moved the curtain away, only to find several men in black squatting downstairs. She became flurried.
Xu Moqi came near and kept on frightening her, saying, “They are professional killers. No need to take a break. They are ambus.h.i.+ng us, lying in wait until the opportune moment.”
Ji Xiaotiao took his collar and said sharply, “Xu Moqi, tell me what kind of trouble you’ve gotten into with them. What am I supposed to do now? Xiaoqing was leaving and I myself . . . How about I call the police?”
“Call the police? They’re doing nothing to arouse suspicion at the moment. How could you call the police?”
“But . . . but . . . ” Ji Xiaotiao was totally confused; she was so young and she couldn’t accept dying for such an illogical reason.
“So, I have a suggestion. Since I got you into this mess, I can’t let you suffer from it and die for no good reason. How about you moving to my apartment?”
“What?”
“Relax. . . I have no interest in your slim and unhealthy body. I just want to compensate you. Go to your bedroom and grab some clothes; I will wait for you outside. Be quick!” He pushed her into the bedroom, and closed the door.
Ji Xiaotiao had no idea what had just happened. Her head was blank. Moving in with that sharp tongue?!
