Feng Wu and Jier had made a lot of headway with Mrs. Malin’s murder and were now currently waiting for someone. Jier didn’t say who and Feng Wu didn’t ask. This meant Feng Wu didn’t have anything to do other than idle around the inn.
Feng Wu developed a good relations.h.i.+p with Matron La from having lived in the inn and interacting with the older woman. Matron La even sewed the pretty purple skirt Feng Wu was wearing.
Because Feng Wu was being idle, Matron La pulled her along and pushed her out of the inn saying, “Go. Shop. There are a lot of specialty vendors around Rime-Frost. So many pretty clothes and accessories. You’re a girl, you’ll love them.”
Feng Wu was confused. Why did being a girl mean she had to like them? Still she did as told and went shopping. She walked around the streets with no destination in mind. There weren’t many people out, but those walking around left heavy footprints in the snow. Her martial arts were strong so her footsteps were light, barely leaving a mark in the snow.
“Hey did you hear? XX shop has a new line of clothing out. They’re made of special material that repel magical attacks. And they look really stylish too! Wanna go see?” asked Lu.
“Oh my G.o.d yeah. They’re gorgeous. I’m going to make sure my dad gets me one,” replied Lucy.
“Me too! I asked my mom to get me one. They’re a limited edition so they’re in high demand. They’ll run out if you don’t get them soon.”
“Oh hey Lucielle!”[notes] yelled out Lu and Lucy to another girl across the street.
Feng Wu was close enough to overhear their conversation. They went on and on about clothes…
Feng Wu was told to go shop for clothes and accessories but she didn’t know where the shops were. The girls in front seemed like they were going to buy some, so she decided to follow them.
“Lucy… you get the feeling someone’s following us?” asked Lucielle.
“Yes...oh I my G.o.d… I hope it’s not the serial killer that’s been murdering pretty girls!” Lucy cried out in alarm. Her pretty face puckered up in fright.
“Honestly what are you two so afraid of! If you’re not sure, then just turn around and look!” Although Lu was scared as well, she was the most daring of the three girls so it was only natural she would be the one to turn around and check.
She was stunned by the sight: an adorably cute brunette! The brunette wore a flower pin in her waist length hair. The skirt she had on was a light purple voluminous one, and her eyes, her eyes were like black pearls. She was simply too adorable!
“Who is that?! She’s way too cute! I’ve never seen her before.”
The others turned to look at Lu’s cry.
“Yeah, yeah, crazy cute. But why is she following us?” Both Lucy and Lucielle cried out in alarm. They were just ordinary school girls, why would anyone want to follow them?
“Maybe she’s just headed in the same direction. Let’s not worry about it and just keep walking.” Despite this the other two still occasionally looked back every few seconds. They finally reached the store they were talking about earlier. Lucielle quickly pulled her two friends inside, trying to shake the brunette off.
Feng Wu had tuned the girls’ conversation out some time ago, but she followed behind when she saw them go into the shop.
The three friends were quite surprised that the brunette followed them inside, however they quickly relaxed once they saw her browsing somewhere else in the shop.
They scolded themselves for being silly gooses. It only looked like the brunette was behind them the entire time because she was headed in the same direction! The shop was very popular after all. All three thought: we’d be a laughingstock if anyone knew about this...
In fact, they were correct! Feng Wu had been following them.
A clerk, seeing Feng Wu browse through the clothes, immediately approached with a wide smile on her face. “Greetings young lady! These are the new styles that came in recently. They’re made of special material that conform to the wearers body, guaranteed to be a perfect fit! The material also resists magical attacks. It’s truly wonderful! Very cost-effective!” said the clerk, extolling on the benefits of the new clothes.
“What do you mean, resists magical damage?” Now Feng Wu was curious. She looked at the clothes on the rack more seriously.
The question didn’t faze the clerk one bit. She replied, “Yes if provides a minor layer of protection,” without skipping a beat.
“Just a minor layer of protection?” Feng Wu frowned, thinking that the item wasn’t as good as expected.
“Eh! Well... what you say is true...” This was the first time the clerk was at a loss for words.
Most of the middle schoolers that came came to buy clothes. The damage mitigation part of it was just a gimmick; no one really took it seriously. Honestly, what were the odds of them encountering a magic battle?
“Would you like to try it on?” The clerk wasn’t sure if the girl in front of her was there to cause trouble or there to actually buy something, but regardless she was a clerk and she was required to smile as long as the customer was in front of her.
“OK.” Feng Wu nodded her head and took a couple of items to the changing room.
The clerk was relieved. Standing and smiling in front of a girl with such a deadpan expression was intense! The pressure was too much!
Feng Wu tried on the clothes. They fit well and looked good even if the defense was low.
“How much?” This was the first time Feng Wu bought her own clothes. Before this Aunty Lian prepared everything for her. After Aunty Lian it was Jier and the shopping spree. The excitement she felt over shopping on her own for the first time didn’t show on her blank face at all.
“It’s fifty gold! Very inexpensive!” The clerk wasn’t exaggerating, fifty gold was relatively inexpensive for a garment woven out of magic material. Given how precious and rare magic material was, the amount in the garment was severely watered down, thus the low cost.
So expensive! She and Jier made 500 gold from swindling the girl at the jewelry shop but they had to spend 200 gold for the transport circle to Rime-Frost. That left them with 300 to split between them, so Feng Wu right now only had 150 gold on her.

@Trasna: The timestamp for the comments should be from my server but the one under [justreads.net] should be when the file was uploaded. It shows up correctly in my feed readers but I have noticed sometimes it’s slow on NU. It might be how I coded my RSS feed and how NU is parsing out its own reader. Not sure. In any case the updates will show up sooner or later on NU. I may go back to manually entering in the updates if it continues to lag.
Someone pm’ed me about how the notes are a distraction when they’re on top. Since it wasn’t a problem to move them, I will leave them down here in the future.
