Chapter 680: Sleep
Translator: Atlas Studios Editor: Atlas Studios
Everyone wanted to know about the conversation between Xiang Wan and Ye Lun.
However, she only handed the phone to Bai Muchuan and told him to watch it after he went back.
Bai Muchuan knew the weight of her words.
In the doubtful eyes of everyone, he put the phone back into Xiang Wan’s bag then squeezed her hand as consolation. After that, he a.s.signed tasks to everyone to settle Ye Lun’s matters.
The only remaining family of Ye Lun was Wei Gang, his dad.
As he was in the detention center, he was unable to arrange the funeral and other things.
Soon, Ye Lun’s manager arrived at the hospital in a rush.
He was the best person to deal with Ye Lun’s funeral arrangements, the media and the rest of the matters. Bai Muchuan let Ding Yifan stay behind to talk to the manager and took Xiang Wan back to the office.
When they were back in Serious Crime Division One, he didn’t head to his office but directly brought Xiang Wan back to his dorm.
“You need a rest. Don’t think about anything else.”
When at the hospital, Xiang Wan already didn’t look good.
Bai Muchuan could see her exhaustion as clear as day, but Xiang Wan couldn’t and didn’t know that she was all pale and weary.
“I’m alright.” She sat on the bed, took out her mobile phone and pa.s.sed it to Bai Muchuan again. “There may be something that you need in there. You should go ahead with your work.”
Bai Muchuan frowned slightly.
He looked at Xiang Wan, took the phone and put it in his pocket.
“Alright, I’ll go back to work after you fall asleep.”
Xiang Wan needed to rest.
For the past few days, Ye Lun had been putting the sedative drug in her water and the effects were still there.
Xiang Wan lowered her gaze. “Okay.”
She laid on the bed directly. She didn’t follow her usual routine of going for a bath and brus.h.i.+ng her teeth.
It was a quiet room and a simple single bed.
She curled up on the bed half awake, her head was groggy and dizzy.
The world didn’t seem real, and something in her heart had been overwhelmed by the day’s events.
Xiang Wan was thinking but her thoughts were in a mess. As she did so, she started to fall into a deep sleep.
Xiang Wan didn’t know how long she had slept.
When she woke up, it was already very bright.
That day was a sunny day.
Golden rays of sunlight shone through the gaps of the curtains and fell on Bai Muchuan, giving a s.h.i.+mmering glow to his already good looks and nice figure. That felt unreal and illusory.
Xiang Wan looked at him, her voice sounded m.u.f.fled and vague.
“Why are you still here?”
Bai Muchuan turned to look at her and smiled. “I just came back not long ago.”
“I see!”
Xiang Wan asked, “What time is it?”
Bai Muchuan replied, “Four o’clock.”
Four o’clock?
Xiang Wan tried to discern the brightness. “Afternoon at four o’clock?”
Bai Muchuan replied casually, “Yeah.”
Just how long did she sleep?
No wonder she felt like she was aching all over.
She had slept too much!
Xiang Wan stretched herself, sat up and patted her face a few times. “You should draw the curtains. Don’t you feel uncomfortable?…”
The curtains were covering the windows but not fully drawn, leaving a strong ray of sunlight s.h.i.+ning on Bai Muchuan. Or rather, Bai Muchuan had chosen to sit at that spot. The room was still generally dim due to the curtains.
Without another word, Bai Muchuan got up and drew the curtains.
The room was now bright.
Xiang Wan squinted her eyes due to sudden brightness.
“Ah, the weather is good.”
Bai Muchuan asked, “Are you hungry?”
Then he turned around. “Do you want to get up and eat something?”
Xiang Wan nodded her head, she was quietly observing his facial expression.
By now, he should have watched the video that she took. Why didn’t he give some reaction?
Also, there was the flash drive. Did he look at the contents after obtaining the pa.s.sword from the video?
Xiang Wan was at a loss how she should start the conversation.
So she got up and quickly went to brush her teeth. After that, she was surprised to find some warm food placed on the coffee table in the living room.
She smiled when she saw that. “How did you know when I would wake up?”
Bai Muchuan replied, “I didn’t. I just waited for you to wake up.”
Xiang Wan was glad to see that the food was still warm. She sat down and started to eat.
When one was hungry, food would taste especially nice. Xiang Wan’s mood suddenly became better because of the delicious food before her.
Having food when one was hungry was probably the most enjoyable…
Bai Muchuan stared at her and didn’t say much. He just sat quietly beside her.
Xiang Wan felt comfortable after having some food and looked at him. “You’re not eating?”
Bai Muchuan shook his head. “I ate at the canteen earlier.”
Xiang Wan replied, “Alright, then I’ll enjoy all of these.”
Bai Muchuan just smiled and didn’t say anything.
They got along peacefully as usual.
Xiang Wan ate in silence. She could clearly feel that Bai Muchuan’s quiet behavior was somewhat unusual.
The atmosphere was so quiet that it was strange.
Xiang Wan thought of all kinds of possibilities for his behavior while she was eating. Soon, she put down her chopsticks.
“I’m done.”
“Full already?”
“Yup.” Xiang Wan nodded her head. “You may start asking me questions.”
“…”
Bai Muchuan did not move.
It was sure scary when the atmosphere was suddenly quiet again.
Silence could sometimes be similar to a knife. When it happened to a pair of lovers, such moments could be torturous.
This was something that Xiang Wan didn’t like.
“Mm?” Xiang Wan tilted her head and took the initiative. “Don’t you have anything to say?”
“You still remember Mr Luo, the retired detective? When he pa.s.sed away, I asked Qi Canghai to pick up some stuff from his home in Jin City.”
“Yes.” Xiang Wan nodded. “It’s his notebook, right? You told me that it contained a lot of his thoughts about the cases he solved all these years. I also remember that he’s one of the detectives that investigated your mom’s case?”
Xiang Wan’s heart was heavy as she said that.
All those words that Ye Lun said were weighing on her mind.
She couldn’t treat it as it had never happened before and that she didn’t care.
“So Bai Muchuan, is that matter really true?”
Bai Muchuan’s expression became cold and grim. He pressed his lips tightly together and didn’t say anything for a long time.
Xiang Wan enquired further, “He told me that my dad had caused your mom’s death. And your mom, also caused my dad’s death?”
“The notes that he left behind did mention about this,” said Bai Muchuan, “but… there is no other evidence to confirm it. You can’t believe Ye Lun’s words fully.”
Xiang Wan ran her fingers through her hair and laughed. “Why do I feel that this matter is outrageous? I clearly remember that when my dad died, your mom was still alive. I’ve seen your mom’s case file… Moreover, I’ve always felt that they weren’t related at all…”
“Xiang Wan.”
Bai Muchuan suddenly interrupted her.
“There’s something that I haven’t told you.”
“Mm?” Xiang Wan looked at his grave expression and felt uneasy. Nevertheless, she still showed a smile. “I thought you had things to ask me. I didn’t expect that you’d tell me a story. Tell me then, I’m listening.”
Bai Muchuan asked, “Do you know why the female lead in ‘The Grey List’ is called Wanwan?”
Xiang Wan felt a tug in her heart.
Well…
Her expression changed. “Because of Xie Wanwan?”
Bai Muchuan shook his head at her seriously. “For the sake of my mom.”
Xiang Wan said, “Your mom? She’s also called Wanwan?”
“Of course not.” Bai Muchuan tried to recall the faraway memories in his childhood. His voice sounded hoa.r.s.e and his tone was low. “When I was young, in Jin City… There was a period of time that my mom used to tell me that… It was a pity that I’m not a girl. She wanted a daughter whom she could tie her hair into braids and wear beautiful frocks. If so, the girl would be as adorable as Wanwan.”
