Chapter 3.1: Giants

… … …

Xuanwu City's Xu Family belong to the silk and clothing field industry. Their fat belly sat on thousands of kilometers long full of cotton and mulberry fields.

Their daughter, Xu Qianqian, she was an ephemeral existence. Xuanwu City's women could not hope to compare. Even if they wished to, they'd only feel solace inferiority. Aside from her sensual beauty, she was well-versed in tactics of chess, arts and calligraphy, painting, and even pursuits of intellectualism. Beginning the age of fifteen, she began managing the affairs of her family business. She was smart and capable, slowly befriending and acquainting herself with those n.o.ble aristocrats sho she and family's prominence and status may rise ever so smoothly.

It was to stay the least, the young beautiful lady of the Xu Family was vied after by countless men. She had immense talent, she was of preeminent background, and moreover, she was gorgeous.

Though Shen Lang was a handsome lotus, even more so than the beautiful Xu Qianqian, the two stood on different planes.

None thought nor did they foresee the young lady of the Xu Family would suddenly fall ill a year ago. The Xu Family head frantically searched all around and invited renowned physicians he could manage into his household with hopes of curing his beloved daughter. In the end, all hopes were put in vain. None managed to find a cure for the young lady. Later on, one alchemist found the source of the young lady's illness—stated that she was not ill but rather… was plagued by an evil spirit. The only hope of saving the young lady was to happily marry her off and transfer the source of the evil spirit to their son-in-law.

Of course, the Xu Family head did not believe in the outrageous claim set forth by the alchemist. He believed Xu Qianqian's illness was nothing more than a harsh, rough cold and would soon be out of its way. Nothing more. But such a thing never occurred. As time pa.s.sed by, her illness only grew worse, and so gritting his teeth and unwillingness, the Xu Family head opened his door, willing to take in any man wis.h.i.+ng to become their son-in-law.

There were countless young men eligible and worthy of competing for the heart of the young lady to ask for her hand in marriage. Who would not fight for a woman like her? Sadly, those who'd marry her would receive the source of her evil spirit. Knowing this, those young men dared not come for they were too afraid of receiving Xu Qianqian's evil spirit.

Beauty and gold are vied after by many, but in the face of death, they are nothing more than a pile of trash many are willing to abandon when given no other alternative.

Shen Lang saw the world differently than all others. He happened to catch sight of the young lady once two years ago. Since then, the thought of her was always at the back of his mind. While others admired her, he regarded her as a G.o.ddess.

Ever since his expulsion from Hanshui School due to his lacking thereof and incapability, he'd been drawing the face of the young lady on the dirt nonstop daily.

Upon hearing Xu Qianqian met a serious illness and needed a man to marry to cure the illness befallen her, Shen Lang rushed to the Xu Family House without hesitation. He said he'd marry the young lady at once. Shen Lang's parents and little brother after hearing of the news rushed directly to the Xu Family House at once to stop the marriage between their son and their daughter from happening, but it was all too late. He had already married the weak and fragile Xu Qianqian.

Regardless, they insisted on bringing Shen Lang home.

Back then, the Xu Family's butler gave Shen Lang's father fifty gold coins. Ired by the action of the butler, his father threw the gold back to the Xu Family. He'd never take money to sell his son.

In this way, Shen Lang became the Xu Family's handsome son-in-law. A poor country boy with beautiful features yet low intelligence entered the house of a rich and powerful family. Of course, him entering as the Xu Family's son-in-law was neither for the sake of him attaining glory and wealth, but to save the woman he regarded as a G.o.ddess regardless if the marriage itself was ludicrous.

Then, the most bizarre occurrence happened. After their quick marriage, Xu Qianqian's health and vitality slowly recovered. Moreover, she grew even more beautiful and alluring. The Xu Family House dared not believe such a miracle, but nevertheless, they were overjoyed with happiness.

Shen Lang was indifferent and cared fairly little of the affairs of the world. He bid majority of his time in the courtyard learning to read and drawing much to his own amus.e.m.e.nt.

Xu Qianqian's att.i.tude towards him was also… complicated. Yes, he healed her; yes it should be a meritorious occasion… just that… her husband was a stupid country boy.
