It's only natural that you want to be seen by your favorite person regardless if you live in the East or the West.
When I looked at the Prince in the eyes, he grasped his body and s.h.i.+vered…. His complexion started to hardened at my words. Why is he acting like this? I was the one who should be embarra.s.sed here. Well, it seems like the previous Celebi hara.s.sed the Prince too many times for a simple sentence like that to get him blue in the face. However, it wasn't unreasonable for the Prince to suspect me for wanting to show my 'pure feelings'. The feelings the old Celebi had towards the Prince were closer to an obsession than to anything remotely resembling love. She only thought about how to get rid of her opponents than wanting to be seen by her favorite person.
So this was the result: a deformed relations.h.i.+p that loves to death and hates to death.
He hesitated to speak for a long time and then said, "Don't lie. All you want is my body and my power."
"Oh? That's not true," I answered as I lowered my head towards the Prince.
After hearing my reply, his face subtly distorted. Everything the Prince said was wrong. To be precise, I didn't want his body, power, or even his heart. I didn't answer in that sense, but it seemed the Prince interpreted my words differently. His misunderstanding made him blush as if I did ended up hara.s.sing him. He seemed to think I wanted something other than his body and power.
Well he was free to make that mistake.. I scratched my head awkwardly.
I want to have a good relations.h.i.+p with the Prince by turning this failed one into a normal one. In order to do that, I have to first resolve the misunderstanding that I like the Prince.
"Anyways, I don't have any ulterior motives regarding you. Besides… I think I can actually help you, Raven."
I was convinced that I would be helpful to him, but the Prince sneered at me on reflex. For the Prince, I was probably someone who could only help herself. It would definitely sound like a lie for me to suddenly offer my help. But it was because of this that the Prince seemed interested in what I had to say. I quickly opened my mouth while carefully gauging his expression.
"Well… don't you hate n.o.bles?"
"…" The Prince's face froze and he stared at me with cold eyes as if he was reading my heart.
The n.o.bles in the novel are depicted as villainous and have plagued the commoners in the name of obtaining luxury. The looked dignified on the outside, but were filthy on the inside. They only cared about being pampered without lifting a finger.
As a matter of fact, the Prince hated those types of n.o.ble families. He would prefer to get rid of them right now. But currently, not only has his body not yet fully matured, he was still young and lacks political power. He also does not have a good standing with the n.o.bles. Regardless, there were a bunch of people who wanted to make a connection with him because of his power as a Prince, but he never compromised himself with those he considered an enemy.
At the end of the novel, the Prince purged all the n.o.bles who have committed wrong doings and returned their property to the commoners. He then got the t.i.tle King of the Common People.
Duke Pirineus was the Prince's most difficult opponent. Moreover, although it hasn't happened yet, the peasants rebelled against the Prince's decision and led a revolt. The rebellion, of course, failed. There was no description on what happened to the Duke after that but it was better for my mental health not to have seen it.
"…Raven, if you become the Emperor in the future you are going to eliminate all of n.o.bility right?"
"…Hah." The Prince laughed with his twisted expression at my words. 'If you become the Emperor,' his eyes were br.i.m.m.i.n.g with patience at that phrase.
But somehow he seemed to be relieved. As if all his frustration before was fake, he said with a composed expression, "…Right. So was that what you were aiming for when you started to starve yourself? From now on, will you look after me but save only yourself? I don't know how you found about my plan, but I don't think I will make exceptions to the n.o.bility. Exactly none."
"No, as I said before, I will absolutely help you Raven."
The Prince frowned at my words as if he heard something strange. He asked with a questioning look in his eyes, "Hey, do you know what you're talking about?"
"Yes, I know very well. I will betray my family if it means I can stand beside you Raven."
The Prince was perplexed at my blunt confession. He looked at me with confusion in his eyes. I can be stubborn when I want to be and if the old Celebi knew, she most likely would've said the same thing.
"How can I… believe that?" He said as he looked at me with suspicion. His confidence in me was still at 1% it seemed.
I was troubled. Despite my efforts, the Prince still hasn't found a reason to believe in me. How many times have I tried to be kind to him?
It was difficult to respond to him, but I eventually was able to respond, "Um… have I ever betrayed you?"
I regretted what I said as soon as I spoke it. Even an outsider will understand how obtuse that was. The Prince, however, had a complicated expression on as he thought to himself.
I was honestly convinced that the old Celebi wouldn't betray the Prince at least. No matter how terrible she was, she was affectionate and had only ever loved the Prince himself.
As for the Prince, his affection towards me was equal to a used rag left on a street. Rather, it would be good if he thought of me as a rag. He would dismiss me instead of killing me. I know that Celebi has done more crazier stuff than I would ever know, but I want to at least take steps to improve my relations.h.i.+p with the Prince.
It would be the best case scenario if the Prince just took advantage of me as a chef, better yet, if he just kicked me to the curb that would be even sweeter.
The promise I tried to make with the Prince failed. After he said 'I will not listen to you anymore,' he left. Incidentally, I didn't get my paycheck. My favorability was still low anyway. It would take the Prince 6 years to purge all the n.o.bles, so I still have time to slowly persuade him. And without reaping any good results, time moved onwards.
I was fine the first day. I never had a big appet.i.te to begin with, but the thought of not eating made me want to eat more so it was hard to bare.
On the second day, my hungry stomach didn't allow me to sleep at night.
On the third day, I made meals at the base as usual, but I couldn't overcome the intense temptation from the food… and I fainted. Alas it was so unfair. Why is my body so fragile?
When I opened my eyes, I saw the beautiful face of the Prince. He stood looking down at me with a firm expression. He, who was younger than me, seemed pretty okay for someone starving himself for a week.
I couldn't focus on my surroundings and it was hard to see.
He sighed and said, "There are different ways to insult me. Did you have to faint from malnutrition in the army that I command?"
Although his words were full of thorns, compared to last time I was more relaxed taking to him. That was because I knew I would meet him again. As the Deputy Commander said, he was too good of a person.
Apart from the fact that he hated me, he wasn't a wicked enough person who would allow someone to fall because of him.
"…eat," I spoke gingerly.
With an annoyed expression he replied as though to persuade me, "I don't get tired at all. If I starve for a month, I won't have any problems with my body. If I'm hungry, I'll realize it and eat. I'm not a child and I don't need you worry about me until you collapse like this… There was no need for this, absolutely none."
He seemed off when he said the word 'worry'.
I looked up at the ceiling with uncertainty in my eyes and said as loud as I could manage, "Raven, you may be okay with starving for a month, but I may die horribly if I don't eat in the next three days."
"What are you talking about?"
"Raven you're someone with outstanding physical strength but I'm not. I am weak. I was born weak… and ordinarily, people die if they don't eat for a week."
He was silent for a long time. Then after chewing on my words, he immediately jumped up and grabbed me. His grip on my shoulders were so strong that I could feel fresh bruises where his fingers were. His hand trembled with anger. "I… I didn't know any of that! Are you threatening me with your life now? What the h.e.l.l would you get for doing that? Why did you suddenly start doing that?"
He started to brood as his shaking turned into gentle rocking. He looked confused, almost like he was suffering. Then with a voice full of resentment and anger, he spoke to me.
