The entrance to that room is large enough to fit their entire convoy. Numerous galleries and other tunnels stretched and reached forming an intensive maze.
Arkalat stopped the group's march and they entered the large formation gallery.
Those gallery rooms often had a single or two exits, making them easier to defend in case monsters came to look for trouble.
Speranza looked around the gallery. The ceiling was at least fifty meters high, and the circ.u.mference of it was more or less one hundred meters.
If one would decide to live here, it would well be possible!
It was large enough for it to have a house and an underground field placed inside. And it would still have s.p.a.ce to spare.
Because the ceiling of the cave was high, it did not feel stuffy at all.
She felt that this large cave was after all, not so bad.
Getting down from her carriage, the wyvern extended its wing, allowing her to climb slowly down from its back.
Turning to face her wyvern mount, she then gently patted the ma.s.sive creature.
Glossing its pleasure softly as she scratched behind that hitching ear ~that ear it hitched all the d.a.m.n over, all the time.
It did not mind the fact that it had become a pet. After all, if the white wyvern, had made a move to rebel, that man would have cut her down ruthlessly!
She was no fool and had understood so much.
This little lady was gentle and kind, so it gave her no problem at all to carry this little human.
It wanted her to scratch its itchy ears and forehead.
Thus removing all those nasty dead scales that it just could not reach.
While the cooks prepared dinner, a few stood guard outside; Placing palisades and pikes to prevent monsters from entering the camp while most would sleep.
The mercenaries and guards would place their tents at the edges surrounding the women and slaves that had been brought along for this trip.
Along the way, once they would reach the border city of the underworld, some would be exchanged for fresh food and traded for other commodities.
They might even buy more and bring them into the more buried cities.
Where food is more pricey as the cultivation of fresh food gets harder in specific areas. In spite of this, these good healthy slaves are even more valued in gold.
If they met other merchants or mercenaries, some trades could also be made depending on how the general decided to handle the matters.
The guards made their rounds and the surroundings looked quiet, but they dared not grow careless.
Everyone that had guard duty was on the edge.
After that attack earlier in the day, they knew the darkness contained critters. Those creatures would make them very bitter with regrets if they got careless.
Inside the General's tent, Speranza was laying in a comfortable bedding. Laying down on her back, she pa.s.sed her hand on her mildly protruding of the second-semester belly feeling about the little life that flourished inside.
She stared at the ceiling in a daze, before they had made their way inside, she had sent a letter home —even if she thought it was useless. Arkalat had insisted time and time again in those four months they spent on the sea.
Saying that the people that had brought her into the world were not that weak to die so quickly.
Besides, her father might well be alive, would she heartlessly leave him unknowing if she was dead or alive?
In the end, she wrote a letter and gave it to a courier to deliver, but it would likely take a year or more for her to receive any reply.
Seeing his little wife in a daze; he knew what she was thinking of when she daze off like this.
Silently walking next to their bed.
Squatting next to her, gently placing his sword callused hand on her belly to see if he would just get lucky in feeling the sweet little bundle made from their love, to kick or move.
Feeling his hand on her belly, she gently smiled at him.
Placing his other hand on her forehead and gently ma.s.saging her temple with his thumb and finger; both were sharing a harmonious and serene moment.
Arkalat was the first to break the silence as he spoke softly in a low voice.
"I still have to look over some maps that the head scouts brought back, after this I will join you, so turn to sleep a little. I know this will be either a perilous trip for you or a very boring one." As she would be confined all the time either on her wyvern or inside the deepest camp tent.
Nodding her head once, she did not complain or whine, after all, he was much unwilling to head down, but he had to obey those orders, and she understood it.
After all, she had agreed to take a general as a husband.
Therefore she needed to act the part and be a proper wife and swallow all complaints that were out of his control.
A little later, she still did not sleep but relaxed instead. Seeing him come over to their bed, she extended her hand up. Which he took and placed a gentle kiss upon her knuckles and fingers.
Soon after, he got into the bed but kept his inner armour on.
Made of light leather it still would be st.u.r.dy enough would attacker rush the camp. And comfortable enough to sleep in.
Since the bundle of love did not dare manifest itself to his paternal earlier, he decided to place his ear on her belly, listening to that second faster small heartbeat.
Hugging his little wife by the waist, he closed his eyes to rest.
Their first night remained uneventful.
Until the third watchman rang the alarm bell— the camp being fast asleep, when suddenly...
An eerie vicious loud roar resounded, echoing all over the enclosed gallery.
All the sleeping guards and mercenaries woke in a panic!
Taking their weapons, as well as, getting out of their tents!
They gazed toward the sole entrance, where their eyes grew wide from shock!
