Chapter 12
Gu Weiyi took Xiaoguang to buy ice cream, while Mo studied the menu in the restaurant. The food in this restaurant looked delicious. She'd like to order a full table.
‘What did you order?' Gu Weiyi sat opposite her with Xiaoguang.
‘Not yet, I was waiting for you.' Mo looked up and saw a lovely toy guitar in Xiaoguang's hand. She was too curious and forgot for a moment that the child hadn't got along well with her. She asked excitedly, ‘How could you have such a lovely guitar?' The tone of voice was even with the sound of coaxing children.
‘Idiot, I bought it of course.' Xiaoguang gave her a look of ‘you haven't seen the world before'.
Mo's laugh froze on her face. Bad boy! I'll steam you up sooner or later!
Gu Weiyi paused with his hand turning over the menu and laughed softly.
Mo lowered her head embarra.s.sedly and studied the menu.
‘What do you want to eat?' Gu Weiyi stopped laughing.
‘Sauerkraut fish.' Mo said.
‘Anything else?'
‘ Sizzling beef ‘
‘Anything else?'
‘Garlic Vegetable Hearts'
‘Anything else?'
‘Steamed spareribs.'
‘Enough?'
‘Cold Cuc.u.mber.'
‘We have only three people and unable to eat so much.' Gu Weiyi couldn't help saying.
‘It was you who have kept asking me.' Mo glared at Xiaoguang who was making a face. ‘All I need is sauerkraut fish, anything else would be okay for me.'
The atmosphere become awkward. They had nothing to talk about. Xiaoguang was a cool kid and wouldn't talk proactively. Mo, who couldn't stand the icy aura, had to find a topic desperately, ‘How long will it take for the house to be renovated?'
‘It will be finished in two days.' Gu Weiyi gave Xiaoguang a piece of beef.
‘Oh.' There's no more topic to talk about... Mo paused for a moment and said, ‘Sorry, it seems that I didn't help you for the decoration.'
‘Are you free this afternoon?' He asked.
‘Yes, do you need me to take care of him?' Although she didn't want to take the bad boy with her, she was a little embarra.s.sed about sitting back and enjoying the success.
‘No, his mother is going to be back in the afternoon. Pick the furniture with me this afternoon.'
‘Pick furniture?' Mo had little experience in this field. ‘I don't seem to be able to do that.'
‘You just have to follow my reference. After all, you'll live in the house in the future.' Gu Weiyi stopping Xiaoguang from stretching out the chopsticks for the sauerkraut fish. ‘It's too spicy to eat.'
Xiaoguang retracted his chopsticks obediently. Mo raised her eyebrows, the boy just bullied the weak and feared the strong.
‘Will you go or not?' Gu Weiyi looked at her and asked.
‘I'll go.' Mo said.
After lunch, Xiaoguang's mother came to pick him up. She was a beautiful and charming woman with a palm-sized face, slender upper-picked eyes, hazy curled lips and brown wavy hair. Her big golden earrings shaking slightly with her speech, dazzling.
‘Thank you, Gu.' She took Xiaoguang and said to Gu Weiyi, with her eyes looking at Mo without any trace. Suddenly she asked, ‘Girlfriend?'
Gu Weiyi smiled without answering while Mo hurriedly waved her hand. Suddenly, Gu Weiyi gave her a meaningful glance, and Mo pretended to be charming and shy, hiding behind him.
‘Your little girlfriend is shy.' She said in a slightly sarcastic tone, ‘Sure enough, she's simple and agreeable, not like us who have to scramble around in society.'
‘She doesn't like to talk.' Gu Weiyi said in an extremely gentle tone, making Mo's hairs stand up.
After a few small talks, the two groups of people left separately.
‘Thank you just now.' Gu Weiyi talks to Mo.
‘You're welcome.' After a few seconds of deliberation, Mo said, ‘May I ask you why?'
‘Single mother, overzealous.' Gu Weiyi explained.
It suddenly dawned on Mo that his orientation didn't affect his luck with women.
When they arrived at the furniture centre, Gu Weiyi already knew his way around the stores. He had good taste and the furniture he chose was simple, generous and practical. While what Mo chose had no use for anything. So she had to choose nothing but small ones, such as shelves and wall lamps.
They spent an afternoon in the furniture centre and got familiar with each other. Mo was able to s.h.i.+ne a lamp on his face and say in the tone of the Hong Kong police: ‘Say, is Xiaoguang your illegitimate son?'
He blocked the light with his hand: ‘Check our DNA, I don't feel like to explain.'
‘Give me your saliva.' Mo said with a smile.
...
The atmosphere suddenly became ambiguous.
Looking at her strangely, he finally stopped looking awkwardly, scolded himself for being an idiot, and unconsciously pressed his hand on the lamp switch.
‘You're burning the light bulb.' Gu Weiyi took the lamp in her hand. ‘Do you want this lamp?'
‘No.' Mo answered quickly. She felt a little frustrated, and added, ‘I have a lamp in my dormitory. I'll bring it with me then.'
‘Fine.' He shrugged and turned off the lights.
When they left the furniture centre, it was already night. Mo hesitated and said, ‘Shall I treat you for dinner.' Mo felt sorry because it was he who paid for the lunch.
‘Let's go.' Gu Weiyi accepted it generously.
They entered KFC, looking at the food pictures above the table, Mo asked Gu Weiyi, ‘What would you like to eat?'
‘Two hamburgers and a large c.o.ke.' Gu Weiyi answered. He didn't really like this American fast food, but he had heard from Fu Pei that she liked it. That's the reason why he chose this place.
‘Well, you go to find a seat and I'll buy it.' Mo said.
Gu Weiyi gave her a slightly surprised look. Few girls would be willing to stand in line to buy things. His old girlfriend had never stood in line to buy anything.
‘Go ahead.' Mo urged him. He nodded, found a seat where he could see the counter, sat down to watch her queue. She leaned her head slightly to study the pictures of food. When it was her turn, she suddenly turned around to search for something until she found him, smiled at him, and turned to order.
He shook his mind for an instant and laughed without modification, which crossed the bustle and fl.u.s.tered his heartbeat.
When Gu Weiyi recovered, Mo had put the things on the table. She was carefully dividing the food. She didn't know how she had brought the things by herself. She put a large c.o.ke and two hamburgers in front of him, moved the rest of the pile across and then sat down.
‘Eat it. I'll buy more if it's not enough.' Mo smiled and said, ‘Or do you want to eat my food? I can share it with you. I bought too much.'
Gu Weiyi nodded his head, she did buy a lot.
‘Would you like to eat this?' She pushed a box in front of him. He opened it. It was an egg tart. He took one and pushed the box back to her.
‘Is it delicious?' She watched him eat expectantly.
He shook his head. ‘It's a little sweet.'
‘Egg tarts don't taste sweet, you don't know much about them.' She despised him.
‘Give me another one.' He laughed and reached for it.
She clapped his hand and said, ‘Don't waste my egg tarts if you don't like to eat.'
‘Chicken wings for you.' She pushed another box.
He didn't pick up the chicken wing until he had taken a gulp of c.o.ke, then took a few bites. He didn't feel that it's particularly delicious. Looking at her who had a look of expectation , he somehow wanted to laugh.
‘It's delicious, isn't it?' She questioned.
‘Not bad.' He had to say so.
She nodded with satisfaction and said generously, ‘That's half for you.'
‘Then do I have to give you one hamburger?' Gu Weiyi asked.
‘No, I don't like hamburgers.' Mo picked up a chicken wing. ‘I think it's better for you not to look at me. I'm not able to eat chicken wings gracefully.'
‘I haven't seen your graceful look yet.' He complained.
‘Hey, you just don't know me yet. I'm a real lady.' Mo said carelessly while eating chicken wings.
Gu Weiyi's mouth twitched.
‘What's with that expression!' Mo was unsatisfied.
‘The expression that says I agree.' He pulled out a tissue and handed it to her. ‘The sauce is on your face.'
Mo wiped it carelessly and kept fighting with the chicken wings.
It had been nearly nine o'clock after dinner. Although Mo said repeatedly that she could go back by herself, Gu Weiyi insisted on sending her to school.
It was the first time Gu Weiyi had been to Mo's school. He found that the street lights of her school were dim and the roads were lined with tall trees. Looking down the road, the trees overlapped. It doesn't like a school, but like the forest.
‘Let me take you downstairs to your dormitory.' He said.
‘No, it's late. You'd better go back or you would miss the bus.' Mo looked at the watch and said.
'It won't be long. I'll send you.'
‘It will be too dark later, you might even meet with a ghost!'
‘Let's go. It will be really late if you keep on rambling.' Gu Weiyi took two steps first, and Mo had to keep up to introduce carefully the building behind the tree, ‘This is the administrative building, the whole building is red, it looks very good in the daytime. What in front of us are teaching buildings. The one with a big light over there is the library. The river we are walking along is called the Acacia River. On the other side of the river, there are many small houses where the old professor lives.'
Gu Weiyi nodded quietly and found that she was sometimes noisy.
‘Here I am.' Mo stopped at a building and said, ‘Boys are not allowed in our dormitory at night.'
‘I didn't say I was going in.' Gu Weiyi had a feeling of being slandered.
‘Hha.' Mo laughed embarra.s.singly and was about to say something while a cry came from behind: ‘Mo -'
They turned their heads at the same time. Fu Pei stepped out from the back of a tree. He took two steps, and there was another person behind him. It was w.a.n.g Shan.
When they came to the front, Mo found w.a.n.g Shan's face was red and her lips were swollen. It was obvious what they had just done.
‘You didn't answer my phone call several days ago.' Fu Pei's first sentence was to complain, ‘I heard you're going to live with Gu Weiyi?'
‘My cell phone didn't have a good signal.' Mo said.
‘Why live with him? Haven't you heard that all men are beasts.' Fu Pei stretched out to pull Mo's hand. She didn't let him.
‘Well, I'm sorry. Here are the beasts.' Gu Weiyi found that Fu Pei's eyes had been locked on Mo, and didn't even realize his presence at all.
‘Why are you two together?' Fu Pei looked at them suspiciously.
‘You ask too much!' Before Gu Weiyi's had had time to speak, Mo took the lead and said, ‘I go up first.' She turned around and was about to leave.
‘Wait a minute.' Gu Weiyi stopped her and took out a bunch of keys from his pocket and handed them to her. ‘The key to the house which will be ready for you to stay after this week.'
Mo took the key, nodded and asked w.a.n.g Shan, ‘Do you want to go up together?'
w.a.n.g Shan turned to look at Fu Pei. Fu Pei nodded, and she did the same as well.
There were very few people on the bus. Fu Pei and Gu Weiyi sat in two single seats separately. Fu Pei sat in front of Gu Weiyi. The bus ran for more than ten minutes, neither of them had said a word, especially Fu Pei, whose face was tense.
‘Gu Weiyi, Mo is mine.' After a long time, Fu Pei's voice came from the front.
Looking down and meditating, Gu Weiyi raised his head and stared at his back, silent.
‘If you... We won't be brothers.' Fu Pei couldn't wait for his answer, and said again.
‘I see.' Gu Weiyi said slightly, looking out of the window, he look complicated.
