I wasn't surprised she would be briefed about my condition. The fact that she wasn't phased or changing her att.i.tude around it made me smile.
"I'm going to teach you how to speak." She held up her hands for all to see. "With these. You won't feel your fingers by the end of my drilling."
Her face lit up with a sinister smile that made the cla.s.s of students either sit petrified or share pensive glances with each other.
Ryuu sighed with a palm to his face. He straightened up and gave his cla.s.s a warm and friendly smile.
"Excuse the Onihime," He calmly said and signed, which made a few of the kids brave a chuckle.
Their chuckles were louder when he waved a hand over Ryoko's protesting mouth with magic that had the power to forcefully silence her voice.
She wasn't all to happy about it, giving him rude fingers behind his back that made the cla.s.s laugh or gasp with unexpected shock. This caused Ryuu to issue her a warning to behave as an educator or be sent back to h.e.l.l's Labyrinth to clean up the mess left behind by centaur demon cells.
He faced the cla.s.s to explain of the left-behind cells after the tunnels had relocked into a new formation, which involved piles and mountains of slime and excreted waste smeared along the tunnel walls with a smell that would linger on the body for a month matter no how many showers or baths a person had taken. No one would have bothered if the tunnels weren't p.r.o.ne to rearrangement, since they were the knights had no choice but clean them out. Of course, this duty was used as a form of punishment for misbehaviour.
Ryuu added that the Wisteria Garden Squad were well experienced with the duty.
The cla.s.s grimaced loudly at the thought. Ryoko rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. Her way of playing nice.
Ryuu commenced with his lesson, writing instructions on the blackboard. My eyes lit up with his pristine and elegant writing. It reminded me of the calligraphy drawn by master monks back at Gat s.h.i.+em. Those monks had been former master swordsmen in their youth.
"Famine." Ryuu signed my name, which caught me slightly off guard. I reactively stood up.
He smiled and gestured for me to stand next to him at the front. Why? I gulped and obeyed, thinking about the consequence of mucking out centaur s.h.i.+t.
I flinched when a few of the older girls at the back of the cla.s.s whispered feverishly to each other. What the h.e.l.l? Did I look like a freak to them?
Ryuu explained to the cla.s.s that I was skilled in sign language and had me face Ryoko. She flashed me a devilish grin.
"Why the h.e.l.l are you grinning?" I annoyingly signed to her with a scowling frown.
"You're a baka. You had to become deaf." She tactlessly signed back.
"Not my fault. It was the mind s.h.i.+eld. Not Death's fault either. I forgot about it and didn't get to do my exercises." My hands answered. I coolly ran them through my hair with a pout.
Ryuu's hand gripped my shoulder. I flinched when I remembered my cla.s.smates staring at me. He had me sit down again. I frowned weirdly, wondering what was the purpose of standing up the front.
The lesson a.s.sumed something of a normality as Ryoko started teaching the cla.s.s like a real teacher. I could see why Ryuu had asked her to lead the lesson, as her explanations were clear, easy to follow and precise.
My eyes started drooping with sleep after half an hour of intense listening. Fortunately, we had practice time for the remainder of the lesson. Ryoko said her farewells and left the room for her s.h.i.+ft at the labyrinth.

Alina faced me with a cordial smile. I helped her with correct finger positioning, which made me think back to when I used to do this with Pesti. I sighed with sadness.
She quickly pencilled on her paper, "Are you alright."
I nodded and resumed practice with her.
I felt a sudden breeze aimed for my neck, which made me raise my hand. I caught the object that had been thrown at me and faced the others with a scowl. Obviously, no one was going to fess up to the crime, so I looked at the evidence.
It was a scrunched up ball of paper. I unravelled it with a squeal at the sight of magical love hearts momentarily hovering about my hands. My eyes widened with shock at the words I read.
"You're cute and sa.s.sy. I like you. You have a girlfriend?"
Alina giggled and tapped Death's back to draw his attention to the note.
"Famine?" Death signed my name with a motherly expression, when I held it away from him.
I caved and let him see it. He groaned and showed War who chuckled. I yelped when more paper b.a.l.l.s attacked my back. I picked up and looked at the notes.
"Who's the red haired man. He's so manly. Can you ask him if he has a girl?" I peered at one note.
"The blond guy in front of you is so handsome. Please tell me he's single!" I groaned at another and handed my brothers their love interest notes.
Jace poked my arm when our note reading was almost catching Ryuu's attention. We quickly gathered up the notes and shoved them under our desks before he caught on.
"Thanks." I mouthed to Jace who nodded.
I let out a goofy grin when I felt the school bell ring to signify the lesson over.
