"What are you doing here you filthy convict."
"G.o.d d.a.m.n it" he cursed "I was just nodding off before you a.s.s came barging in! And I don't hurt while I'm sleeping!"
"Who are you and what are you doing here" Ca.s.s threatened pointing her gun right between his eyes?
"Hahahaha" he started laughing maniacally "what are you going to do shoot me?" He mocked "you'd be doing me a favor."
Ca.s.s lowered her gun confused.
"Look at his legs Ca.s.s" I pointed "he can't walk."
She looked and saw his legs were sitting at odd angles and were covered in dry blood.
"What happened" she gasped?
"The mother f.u.c.king Legion happened, what the f.u.c.ks it look like!"
"How come they let you live" she asked?
"Because I was one of the big winners" he laughed.
"The lottery tickets scattered around town" I added.
"Exactly" he snapped "me and my friend were planning on robbing the town when the Legion came out of nowhere. They gathered everyone together and handed out lottery tickets."
"And you won" Ca.s.s wondered?
"Nah, I was second place. They let the guy who won walk but, being the runner up got my legs beaten with a sledgehammer."
"Better than being dead" I told him.
He scoffed "Don't need to tell me. The 'lucky' losers of their little game got beheaded while the unlucky ones were either burned alive, crucified, disemboweled by dogs, or turned into slaves."
"Slaves" Ca.s.s perked up "Which direction did they go? We might still be able to save them."
Boxcars shook his head "I doubt it, they took them a couple days ago. They're probably pa.s.s through Cottonwood Cove already and are at The Fort."
Ca.s.s seemed a bit depressed knowing we couldn't save anyone. I put my hand on her shoulder to try and comfort her.
"Here" I said taking some Med-x out of my pack "you're probably going to need these."
"d.a.m.n, Five whole hits of Med-X! A guy could put himself out of his misery with this much!"
Ca.s.s pushed my hand off her shoulder and glared at me "You're giving him drugs!"
"What" I defended myself "Med-X are just painkillers aren't they? It's not like it's Jet or anything besides look at him. Even if he's probably just going to abuse them he definitely needs them."
She didn't respond and just huffed and looked away from me.
We left Boxcars in the general store. It didn't feel right but, what were we going to do? Take him with us? From what Ca.s.s had told me Novac the next closest settlement was at least a week away. And the trip wouldn't be easy either, we'd have to pa.s.s through Legion patrolled territory to get there.
The worst part was that the highway to Novac traveled in between to cliffs meaning ED-D's sensors would be basically useless.
So we had two choices follow the highway and have a quick but, dangerous path. Or cut through the terrain going over every hill and ravine we come across and possibly run out of supplies before we arrived.
In the end we decided that we could actually shoot at anyone who ambushes us. While if we ran out of supplies all we could do is slowly die of thirst.
We stood the night in town hall and I placed mines all over in case something happened. Then I spent the rest of my evening reading the Big Book of Science I found, before going to bed.
We woke up at four in the morning to wake as much progress as possible today and while I doubled checked all our supplies. Ca.s.s went to give Boxcars some food and water to hopefully keep him alive until the NCR could be bothered to come and clean Nipton up.
But, unfortunately when she returned Ca.s.s told me that he overdosed on the medicine I gave him yesterday.
I know that with an injury like his he wouldn't survive in the wasteland. But, it still didn't feel good knowing I was responsible for his death.
We left as the first hints of blue were coming over the horizon. The still burning tire fires at our back and a long hard road in front of us. All the terrible things that had happened since I came to this world had been slowly weighing on me. And as we left the destroyed remains of Nipton I could honestly say I had never been more depressed in my entire life.
While we were in town I had been in shock but, now that we were leaving it all came rus.h.i.+ng to me. I had never seen anything like Nipton in my life. Sure I had seen doc.u.mentaries about things like that but, isn't the same. The sight of still drying blood, the feel of rotting flesh, the putrid stench of burning bodies.
Everytime I thought of all that I felt my anger over taking me. There would be no more mercy for the Legion. I wouldn't comprise with them to avoid fights or sneak away if I saw them. I would be sure to use my power to wipe the Legion off the map.
I remembered that there was a Legion raid camp not far from us. I knew that all this anger I was feeling was unhealthy and would probably get me killed if I could reign it in.
But, before that I wanted to make sure that the Legion knew my name. So when I arrive at the Hoover Dam with an army of robots they'll know who it who destroyed them.
Not to mention there was a certain weapon near the raid camp that I had, had my eye on for a while.
The Ratslayer.
