I was at the automaton's feet when Rimbaldi's voice echoed through the s.p.a.cious chamber once more. "You come here with your magic and your precious treasures, thinking you can beat me?" He burst into a shrill laughter. "You can't beat science, you fools! Let me show you what my machines are really capable of!"

The automaton's metallic feet emitted a deafening cracking noise. Something whirred behind the vines that covered the machine's legs. What I saw next made me cut the energy I supplied to the vines to keep a tight hold over the automaton. Circular saws whirled as though powered by magic. They cut the vines and allowed the machine to regain its mobility.

Its eyes flashed as they landed on me. I heard Rimbaldi's shrill laughter. Then the automaton's feet began gliding over the surface. I saw gigantic wheels sprout out from the base of the machine's legs. They were all connected to each other using a wide metallic belt.

They whirred into action, and the automaton zapped toward me. All the while, four poles sprouted from the machine's back. Steam raged out of them, and the machine picked up speed. It hit me with its leg and I flew backwards. My flight wasn't even long, for I slammed against a wall, cracked it open then got through it, creating a new hole inside.

I grunted and tried to disentangle myself from the rocks and roots that surrounded me. My body ached all over, and my conduits had once more inflated to dangerous levels. I spread my senses outwards, only to sense the automaton approaching me at a dangerous speed. I had no time to think of my inflated conduits.

I projected my energy outward, creating a shockwave large enough to clear the debris that hindered my movement. I quickly sprung up to my feet. Then I coated my hands with energy and punched the earth below me, creating a small tunnel to duck in. I got inside it just in time as the automaton thrust its mechanical hand inside the hole.

I heard a loud explosion above my head. Then dirt and rocks fell above me, burying me in the hole I'd created to escape in the first place. By then, I was completely isolated from the outside world. I spread my senses outwards, and as I strongly suspected, Heda and the others had completely vanished.

The machine had already gone in pursuit, but I couldn't sense the three champions. They had used me as bait, as they previously had. This time, I wasn't going to let that slide. I've allowed them to use me twice. That was more than I could stomach.

I sat in that hole for what seemed like an eternity. I took my time regulating the energy flow in my soul until I've completely recovered. The purpose of having multiple cores was to allow the body to regenerate fast, and to use insane amounts of energy during fights.

The champions relied too much on their powers, as I have when I owned Omega's time fragment. One thing I learned thanks to my master, there is more to power than the simple manipulation of one element.

I extended my energy outwards, creating a ghost that was three times my size. I called for the element of earth. "Oh mother of all that lives, hear my plea. I am but a humble servant. I beg of thee, lend me your powers, for forces of evil threaten the life you so desperately seek to protect."

Some elements were sympathetic in spirit, like earth. Others simply existed. They didn't feel nor think. They never cared for others' plight, like fire. Fire would never lend anybody a helping hand. You could direct it toward a target, sure, but it will harm you if you ever got in its way. Earth, however, could help you overcome the most difficult obstacles.

I felt the ghost I created with my energy pulsate. A foreign energy, ancient and powerful, began merging with it.

Earth had answered, not in words, but in a mixture of feelings and pictures. I could translate what I felt in words. Only it would only be a pale imitation of what earth had conveyed to me, for words were limited, while ancient beings and elements never needed codes to speak.

I felt energy surge through me. It felt like a refres.h.i.+ng drink after a long day spent under the blazing sun. My body and mind felt relaxed, and I felt more powerful than I'd ever been. Earth would bestow its blessing upon those who pray to it, as long as your plight matched what the element believed in.

The roots and dirt I was buried under began moving, creating a tunnel before me that led outside. I crawled outside and looked around. The first thing I heard were multiple clicking sounds from the tunnel. I looked around just in time to see a horde of spiders heading my way.

While I was busy fending off the big machine for the champions, Rimbaldi had rounded up his little creatures and sent them to surround us. The sly b.a.s.t.a.r.d!

I placed my hands on the floor and felt the energy emanate from Mother Earth. Everything seemed to answer to me at that point. I could reroute the roots that extended below the ground. I could create deep holes that would swallow the creatures whole, but that would harm the element, breaking the pact I'd just made with it.

Instead, I asked for reinforcement. Clay began coating my arms, chest and legs. I'd grown at least five feet taller by the end of the transformation. I would have given anything to see myself standing, earth covering me from head to toe like a golem.

The creatures sped up toward me, screeching and clicking their sharp legs on the floor. I dashed toward them. This was the second time I've ever used this kind of pact. The first time was just for practice, and Omega was overseeing the entire process.

I knew exactly how to move with my new body. Despite being covered in hard clay, I moved faster than I could in my human form. I reached the spiders and began my rampage. I was angry I let those champions use me for the second time. I was angry I'd let the machine bury me in a wall.

Most of all, I was angry at dropping my guard down and believing Heda would still stick around.

I punched and stomped and tore limbs from bodies. I didn't bother guarding against incoming attacks, as with every hit the spiders landed, earth would form around me once more and protect me.

I was a machine on my own, and I had a day to freely use this form.

Heda, Rimbaldi... Just you wait. I'll make your lives a f.u.c.king nightmare!
