Chapter 4
Yan Shuyu dashed off from the crime scene and ran into an empty elevator. She finally felt a little more relaxed after the smooth, metallic elevator doors had shut. She leaned against the elevator wall, closed her eyes, and let out a long sigh.
Truth be told, it still felt unreal that she had transmigrated to become the villainous stepmother. And that wasn't just because of the very tragic ending, but also that the villainous stepmother barely had any presence in the novel. At most, she was just the cannon fodder in the first three chapters.
The stepmother and her son only existed for the purpose of the male lead honing his mental stamina and eventually becoming the powerful and fearless hegemony CEO. But, what was the purpose of it all anyway? When the story had started, the male lead had already successfully gained his father's approval and took over his father as the new CEO; whereas the stepmother and her son, having perfectly fulfilled their purpose, bowed and exited the stage. The entire time, the villainous stepmother didn't even get to have a name - if she hadn't transmigrated, Yan Shuyu would never know that she happened to have the same name as the villainous stepmother.
Had she known this would happen to her, she wouldn't have cheered at the decisiveness and ruthlessness of the male lead when she was reading the book.
Now that she had transmigrated, as a lover of cliché webnovels, Yan Shuyu was very disappointed that her role was but a small cannon fodder who didn't even have a name. And, what distressed her the most wasn't even that fact that she would be spending her golden years in prison, but her current dest.i.tute situation - currently the original owner was dirt broke.
In the novel, the author never elaborated much on the background of the stepmother before she married the male lead's father. Even the ident.i.ty of her child's father was barely mentioned; therefore, as a reader of the book, Yan Shuyu barely remembered the stepmother and her son weren't very well off before they hooked up with the male lead's father. One of the readers even commented in a feedback that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. That's why even though her son and the male lead had the same education, the stepbrother was still several leagues below the male lead. He was doomed to become the cannon fodder.
Yan Shuyu couldn't have agreed more and mentally prepared herself about her current situation. Yet, after she had sorted out the original owner's memories, she still couldn't help but tear up for her.
It was said that every pitiful person would have something that one would hate about, but the flip side was also true. The original owner had a very pitiful past. She was born into a poor and stupid family. And, being pretty, she was treated as some special goods. Before she even graduated high school, her parents were already plotting how to make the most money off of her. The young girl, who refused to succ.u.mb to her fate, decided to run away with her puppy love boyfriend. Being together day and night, naturally, they had an accident, and their love child joined them shortly.
After her son was born, between diapers and formulas, their expenditure increased greatly, and they were merely young adults themselves. With no skills or academic background, jobs were hard to come by, and their days became more and more poverty stricken. Her husband was a responsible man, so he joined a gang in exchange for money to support his wife and kids. As he was reckless and vicious, he was moving up the ladder, and the three of them had some stability in their lives for two years. But the good days didn't last, the boy died in a horrible death in a gang fight.
With their status and the way that he died, naturally, she was not ent.i.tled to any compensation or insurance money.
Losing her support and quickly running out of food at home, the original owner didn't have time to mourn for her lost lover. She had to set aside her emotions and started looking for work.
Without any strength or academic background and with a child to feed, the original owner didn't have a lot of options and turned to the night scene.
