Mr. Xia panted heavily and was filled with rage. Xia Xingyan, who stood beside him, put on an understanding face and patted her father's chest to help him relax. "Dad, calm down a bit, don't lower yourself to her level. In any case you can't throw her out since she's already back, and besides, the kid is innocent. He is your grandson after all." She emphasized the word 'grandson' deliberately, which had an effect like blowing on embers, infuriating Mr. Xia all of a sudden.

Xu Hao was just standing there and watching the chaos of the Xias. He stared at the child who had a pair of s.h.i.+ny black eyes and was hiding behind Xia Xingcheng, which made him suddenly recall that man who appeared beside her yesterday. He clenched his fists, the coldness concealed in his heart becoming even greater and the swelling waves of his gaze were surging and almost overflowing. After all, he and Xia Xingcheng had been together for years. Though they eventually broke up because of the accident, he couldn't completely get her out of his mind.

Xia Xingcheng watched the whole family dispa.s.sionately and some bitterness was boiling over in her heart, though she held it in. She had already antic.i.p.ated this scene but couldn't help feeling very hurt when she saw it with her own eyes. No one ever knew what it was like for her to be exiled abroad. She was so broke that she couldn't afford to eat or find a place to sleep. In order to save money she even had only one meal a day and made do by bunking with others at night. She had suffered all kinds of hards.h.i.+ps and tortures. Even though she almost died on the street, still no one called to ask her if she was living well in a foreign country. Her heart was already well and truly dead. Whether or not her father would take Bao as his grandson or not, she didn't care.

"Bao'er is my child," Xia Xingcheng huffed heavily, pus.h.i.+ng the past deep down in her heart. "Whether you admit him to being your grandson or not, it's your business; nothing to do with me."

"I'm going back this time in order to attend their engagement ceremony. I'll return right away after that." Mr. Xia glared at her as if looking at a pile of trash. "I tell you, you're allowed to join the ceremony but you can't take your son with you. You don't know what shame is, but we do!"

Xia Xingcheng didn't care one bit about whether or not she could take Bao to the engagement ceremony. She felt nothing but disgust about the whole issue.

She nodded casually, then held Bao's hand and they left together. She didn't even step into the living room but left this house without a trace of nostalgia for the place she had lived for twenty years.

She looked down and checked her watch. It was still early so Xia Xingcheng planned to go back to grandma's and, given this rare opportunity, bought grandma some essentials.

Xia Xingcheng was just about to call a cab at the crossing when she unexpectedly saw Xu Hao following her before walking ahead and stopping her.

"Anything else?" Xia Xingcheng folded her arms with a cold face, seemingly not in the mood for talking.

Xu Hao felt so annoyed seeing her with such a face. It was she who fooled around with other men but now she dared to question him in a righteous manner.

"I'm asking you." He could not get rid of the anger in his voice and stared straight at the eyes of Xia Xingcheng. "You said Xingyan was disgusting yesterday. What do you mean by that?"

Xia Xingcheng did not expect that Xu Hao still remembered what she had said yesterday in anger. Her composure stiffened for a while, then she raised her head and looked at him.

"What right do you have to say such things to Xingyan?" Seeing her silent, Xu Hao immediately clenched his fist and shouted angrily, "Aren't you the disgusting one? You climbed into the bed with other men behind my back, but now you still have the nerve to..."

"You've said enough!" Xia Xingcheng did not allow him to finish his speech, then she tightened her brow and cut him off. "You don't deserve to mention the past to me. Xu Hao, we grew up together and knew each other for so long, but you didn't even give me basic trust!"

Once she spoke of what had happened, she became so angry that she was stifled. She thought that she loved this man deeply, as someone with whom she could spend her life, but he chose to leave without hesitation when she was at her most vulnerable, at a time when she really needed to be taken care of.

"I fell into somebody's nasty trap while you were leaving without even asking. Now we have made it clear that we don't owe each other anything. From now on, live a happy life with that sort of woman Xia Xingyan."

After that, she didn't want to pay any further attention to Xu Hao. She bent to take Bao's hand and prepared to leave. At this time, Xu Hao finally sensed that there was something not right in her words. He reached out and grabbed her wrist then urged, "What do you mean? What trap?"

Xia Xingyan, who had been sneakily listening to them from the shadows, finally couldn't help but quickly walk out and hug Xu Hao around the waist.
