"I feel pain once in a while, but it's bearable," she managed to say in between her breathlessness.
"Contractions?"
"I'm not sure. There's still 2 weeks to my due date."
"Umm... I don't think so babe," he said as he lifted her off the bed.
"My water broke," she screamed in surprise.
He helped her change out of her wet clothes and carried her to the car. He had abandoned his Jeep for an SUV.
At 4am, the couple made their way to the clinic. Her contractions were still manageable and a bit far apart. She got admitted and the screening process didn't take long.
"Epidural?"
"Not for now. If it gets worse, then I'll take it."
Quincy stayed by her side and constantly refilled her ice cup.
By 5am, her contractions were closer now. She was starting to sweat.
The nurse came by, "it's time to wheel her in. Would you like to be in there?"
Quincy wanted to reply no because they had talked about it. She hadn't wanted him to see her in a crazy state, so he chose not to go in.
Before he could talk, "you had better get in there with me," she said sternly.
As a man who found it hard to say no to his wife, he followed her in helplessly.
She was in so much pain that Quincy felt scared. She didn't take the epidural yet, she wanted to try it out naturally. The doctor told her not to because of the stress, but she wanted to give it a go ahead first.
Luckily, all the babies were positioned well and natural birth wouldn't be a problem. Her tenacity would be proven in the long run.
"You had better come out of there," she said, looking down at her tummy and scolding the babies.
"Don't be stubborn like your father and give me peace."
"Come out... come out... come out..."
"I give up... Let's die together then since you don't wanna come out."
"It's all your fault Quincy. Keep in your pants later."
