12:03 PM
Max entered the main lobby and went straight to the reception.
"Excuse me, I am looking for Dr. Elizabeth Williams.", he spoke to the receptionist who was typing on the computer.
"Do you have an appointment?", the woman asked without lifting her gaze from the screen in front of her.
"No."
"You need an appointment to see Dr. Williams."
Max was amused by the fact that the woman is not sparing him a single glance. "I am not a patient."
The woman paused her typing and lifted her gaze. Her eyebrows shoot up while she looked at handsome Max looking sharp in a gray business suit and a bouquet of red roses in his hand. "Not a patient? You are overdressed for a flower delivery. Why are you looking for her?"
"I came to take her out for lunch."
The woman blinked. "I am sorry, but Dr. Williams instructed us that unless it's work related, no one is allowed to go and see her… and that includes flower deliveries also." She smiled and propped her chin on her fist. "But if you need a company for lunch, handsome… I am available."
Max leaned closer and flashed a smile. "With a heavy heart I must refuse because I am taken. My lunches are reserved for my girlfriend." He winked at the dazed receptionist and got his phone.
In Elizabeth's office…
Liz is thinking what to do for lunch.
If she goes to the cafeteria now, it's highly likely that she will b.u.mp into Dr. Snow, and she does not want to give him an opportunity to talk to her because it can end up in only two scenarios: one is that they cause a scene and the second one is that they talk normally but in that case, people would a.s.sume that they reconciled. Any of those two outcomes is not good for her and that is why Liz wants to stay away from Dr. Snow (if possible).
Max's kiss from the morning made her brain short-circuit and she forgot to pack a lunch from home. Liz is frustrated at herself. Why is she acting like an enamored teenager? It was just a kiss, for crying out loud, is there a need to get dazed like that? How embarra.s.sing! With this level of excitement, when she feels his tongue in her mouth (one day, when they deepen the kiss) she will literally pa.s.s out. Now that will be embarra.s.sing!
On the bright side, by the time she reached Franciscan Medical Center, her brain process stabilized, and she managed to stay focused on her patients. Luckily, her morning was filled with appointments, so she didn't have the time to think about the kiss or Dr. Snow.
Back to lunch thoughts…
Ah, it seems that she is doomed to have a sandwich. She will need to buy food from the café again because the food she got yesterday, ended up in trash untouched. At that time, she was too distracted to eat with all the flower-drama and Chairman Lee's sending her home… and she forgot to refrigerate food so this morning when she saw wilted lettuce, she tossed everything in the trash.
She was about to get her purse and head to the café when her phone rang.
Liz smiled when she saw the caller ID: 'My handsome boyfriend'
"Yes?", she answered sweetly.
"Is it true that your boyfriend can't take you out for lunch?"
Liz paused. "What?"
"I am at the reception and the woman said that unless I am a patient I can't see you. Tell me, which part of me should be hurt so that I can see you?"
Liz was not sure she heard him correctly. "You are downstairs?"
"Yes."
Liz was already das.h.i.+ng down the hallway when she responded: "I will be there in a minute."
In the main lobby, Max kept the phone in his pocket and smiled at the bewildered receptionist.
"She will be here in a minute.", he said before stepping away.
He saw Liz come out of the elevator and walk toward him. Her smile told him that she is happy to see him.
"I was not expecting you..."
"Surprise.", Max said and offered her the bouquet of red roses.
Liz accepted the flowers while glancing around, noticing an increasing number of eyes from the direction of the reception looking their way. Somehow, she didn't care if any of the curious onlookers will know who he is and what is his reputation because right now, his charming smile was directed at her and she can see that he is looking only at her. "Thanks. Did you say that you are here to take me out for lunch?"
Max confirmed and leaned closer so that they are not overheard: "It is a private spot. No one can see us. I hope that is OK."
Liz felt a mix of emotions. He is so considerate, how can she say no? And lunch with Max sounds a thousand times better than a sandwich in her office. She nodded in response.
"Are you going out like that?"
Liz looked at herself and realized that she is wearing her white doctor's coat. When she heard that he is here, she just rushed out without thinking. "Uhm… I should keep this and take my purse. Do you want to wait here, or join me and see my office?"
Max smiled. "Lead the way…"
Several sets of eyes from behind the reception counter were fixed on Liz and Max as they walked into the elevator together.
"Who is that hottie?", one nurse nudged the receptionist who spoke with Max.
"That is Dr. Williams' boyfriend… he came to take her out for lunch… and he brought her flowers…", the receptionist responded.
"Oh! So, it's true that she has a boyfriend…", second nurse mused.
"Out for lunch? That means they will pa.s.s this way…", another nurse mumbled while getting her phone. She needs to notify others!
In Elizabeth's office…
Max hopped on the exam table which is actually a bed and can be adjusted from a completely flat position to a L-shaped chair.
"I'm ready for my checkup.", he said while lying down.
Liz laughed seeing how silly he is. "Get up."
Max pouted. "Not until I get my checkup."
Liz kept the roses on her desk and walked to him. She exhaled. "What are your symptoms?"
He placed his palm over his chest dramatically. "Recently, there is some p.r.i.c.kling right here, on the inside. And it's getting worse and worse…"
Liz rolled her eyes at his silly antics. "p.r.i.c.kling in the chest? I will order an x-ray to see what is going on… and cardiologist should check if you have a heart condition. But that is not for a neurosurgeon..." Liz turned away from him.
Max leaped off the exam table and pulled her into a hug.
"I missed you.", Max spoke into her hair.
She wrapped her arms around him, under his suit jacket and stated a fact: "We saw each other few hours ago."
"Are you saying that you didn't miss me?", Max grumbled.
Liz stifled a laugh. "That is not what I said."
"I hope me showing up here will not cause problems."
"It's not a problem.", Liz a.s.sured him. "It's a lunch break and you are not disturbing anyone. Actually, my next appointment is in two hours so until then I am available. Why do you think that it's a problem?"
"The woman at the reception said that unless I am a patient I can't see you. And that you will not accept flowers either."
Liz sighed and looked at Max guiltily. "Last two days I got flowers and it interfered with my work, so I told them that unless a patient is looking for me, not to disturb me. I didn't think that you will come here, if I did, I would put you in as an exception."
Max was happy that she told him about flowers and trouble at work, even though she omitted Dr. Sn.o.bby's name and other details out of the story.
Max watched Liz change from her doctor's coat and get her purse and then she paused. "Just a minute…"
Liz made a call from her office phone: "Rhonda, I have flowers on my desk… No, I want to keep these. Can you send someone with a vase so that they stay in water? … How do you know that they are from my boyfriend?! … OK. OK… Thanks."
Liz ended the call and stiffly turned to Max. "That was Rhonda from administration. It seems that the whole hospital knows that my boyfriend is here."
Max looked at Liz with a troubled expression. "You said that me being here is not a problem."
"Oh, it's not a problem. I am just amazed how quickly the gossip spreads…" Liz's voice trailed away, and she looked at Max in amazement while emotions stirred inside her when she realized: "You came here because of the rumors that I am dating Dr. Snow. Now everyone knows that I have a boyfriend and they will stop their gossips about me and him. How did you find out?" Before Max could respond, she did: "Mia…"
Max stood one step away from Liz and looked her in the eyes, hoping that she will not get angry at him while explaining: "Elizabeth, I have no intention to meddle, but I could not let him continue smearing your name at work. Me appearing here will not stop his advances, but the others will know that you are not a willing partic.i.p.ant."
Liz slammed herself in Max and hugged him tightly. "I am sorry for not telling you."
"Shh… It's OK. I understand."
Liz was surprised that instead of being scolded for keeping things from him, Max is comforting her. "Are you not angry?"
Max smiled bitterly. "I am angry at myself because I'm still not at the level where you will share your problems with me."
Liz felt horrible after hearing that he is blaming himself even though she is the one with secrets. "Max, it's not you, it's…"
Liz stopped talking when Max's lips covered hers. Her brain went numb and that is exactly what she needed: to forget about everything other than the man who is holding her in his arms.
Max felt Liz's arms snake around his neck and a second later his soul shook when her lips moved against his.
It took him a moment to realize: she is kissing him back!
He gathered her close to him and their bodies were tightly pressed against each other while their lips danced in sensual movements, making them both lose themselves in the moment.
