"Wish me luck!", Derek told Mia with a wink and dashed away before Hunter can say anything.
Mia laughed at Hunter's grumpy expression. "You know that he is teasing you, right? If he is serious about flirting with me, he would not do it in front of you."
Hunter gave 'are-you-kidding-me' look to Mia. "You don't know Derek. He looks like he is joking, but if you respond to his advances, do you think that he will say 'no'?"
Mia frowned. "Isn't there some bro-code you guys follow? Or you think that it's OK to hit on your friend's girlfriend?"
"I don't like what he is doing.", Hunter admitted. "But, regardless if he is right or wrong for trying, nothing can happen unless both parties are willing, right?"
Mia thought about his words for a second before asking: "If I accept his coffee invitation, will you be angry at him? Or me?"
"Having a coffee is not a problem. But if it goes beyond that, and the two of you cross the line of friends, I will be angry. Disappointed. In both of you… and in myself for trusting you. I believe that the right word is 'heartbroken'."
Mia looked into his dark blue eyes which stirred with emotion while he spoke, and she held her breath.
She placed her palm on his cheek. "Hunter, I am falling for you and I am unable to stop it."
He smiled and leaned closer.
"I am glad to hear that because I fell for you already.", he confessed in her lips before kissing her.
Under the seductive dance of their lips, the warm and fuzzy feelings swelled inside Mia, turning into burning flames, and she had the urge to rip Hunters clothes and have her way with him right there. The only problem is that they are on the beach full of people instead of in a place which provides privacy.
When they inched away after that kiss, Mia saw by the way Hunter looks at her that their desires are matching.
Hunter leaned his forehead on Mia's and closed his eyes before taking in a deep breath. She did the same while enjoying all the changes in her body Hunter's kiss invokes: from the faster heartbeat and lack of oxygen to the floating sensation and sparks which fire up every nerve ending in her body... it is wonderful.
"Wow! I will call this a miracle Sunday!"
Hunter looked up toward the too loud voice at the man who was standing few steps in front of them and responded with a reserved nod. "Tyler…"
"This morning I saw Max with a bird coming off from his boat and he called her his girlfriend. I was in a shock for half an hour. Since when Max has girlfriends? I know more than few girls who were fuming because he nailed them and didn't call after that, forget about giving them a t.i.tle of a girlfriend. I am confident that the bird I saw this morning is special. I came here to clear my mind and I b.u.mp into this scene! You have a girlfriend as well? No one will believe this…", Tyler ended while shaking his head dramatically.
Both Mia and Hunter looked at Tyler with a frown.
Mia does not care that Tyler is causing a scene in front of her and Hunter. But she is alarmed that he spoke mockingly about Max and Liz. Mia is aware how much trouble Max is going through in order to get Liz to relax (because she knows Liz well), and people who come and meddle like that can ruin all the progress Max made. And it's not just Max, if Liz pulls back because of something like this, Liz will be wary about any other guy as well. Ah! There is a danger that Liz will be single for life, and Mia will not allow that to happen!
She stood up abruptly.
"Maybe you should go and take your big mouth elsewhere... Before you offend someone you should not.", Mia said while glaring at Tyler.
"Ah, a fiery one!", Tyler grimaced mockingly. "Hunter, hold your girlfriend on a tighter leash, or she might get hurt."
Hunter was right next to Mia and his body tensed in anger. "She is not a dog. And if she ends up in a fight she can't win, I've got her back."
Tyler's eyes flashed in surprise seeing Hunter's hostility and he was about to say something, when a person who manages matches approached them. "Team 27, you are next."
Tyler watched Mia and Hunter walk toward the volleyball field and hollered: "See you in the semifinals, if you can reach there!"
Mia and Hunter ignored him.
"Are you OK?", Hunter asked Mia, noticing that her mood is off.
Mia stretched her neck. "My allergy flared up."
"Allergy?", Hunter got alarmed and he was eyeing Mia nervously while checking for a swelling or rash or… whatever allergy symptoms she has.
"Yeah. I am allergic to a.s.sholes.", Mia said with a straight face.
Hunter paused for a second and then both of them burst into laugh.
The officiator approached them and explained the rules: "In first two rounds, one set win is enough to proceed to the next round. After that, it's quarterfinals which require a two set win. Set is won with 21 points, and at least a two point difference. Each player can't touch the ball more than three times before pa.s.sing it across the net…"
Their first opponent was a team made of two muscular girls. They seemed friendly. Mia was irked that they are more friendly to Hunter than to her, but that is what she gets for having a hot boyfriend.
A coin toss determined that two-girls (which Mia called macho-girls in her mind) got the first serve.
Both macho-girls have strong hits, but their aim is off, causing the ball to go out of bounds. The macho-girl-team practically self-destructed, so Mia and Hunter treated this match as a warm-up.
Mia felt sorry for two macho-girls when she saw their pitiful expressions as the judge announced: "Team 27 wins with a score 21-8 and proceeds to the next round."
Mia's sorry-for-the-girls s.h.i.+fted into rage when she saw that the taller macho-girl slipped her phone number to Hunter when they shook hands. Outrageous!
Mia's rage lasted only a second, because she heard Hunter say: "Sorry, I can't keep this. My girlfriend will not approve." Hunter returned the paper with the number to the tall macho-girl and put his arm around Mia's shoulders. Ah, she got herself a good boyfriend.
Mia does not know that Hunter would not accept the number even if she is not there. The only difference is that before they met, Hunter would crumble and trash the paper with an icy expression on his face, like the girl offended him for offering the number (and everything that comes with it). But now that Mia is by his side, Hunter wanted to bring up the fact that he has a girlfriend. He likes to say the word 'girlfriend' while talking about Mia. Mia as Hunter's girlfriend, it fits perfectly.
The second match was more challenging, it was against the team of two guys who already won their first game. And their effective teamwork showed that they are playing together for a long time.
Mia impressed Hunter with her high-jump. Hunter knew that she is fast and precise, in good control of her body. And now he got to see her jump higher than a 6' tall player on the other side of the net. Mia is amazing.
They took turns who is on the net, and even though Mia loves playing on the net, this time she found an immense pleasure playing from the field.

The sight of Hunter's focused expression while his eyes didn't leave the ball… the way his body arches before he explodes and scores a point… his precise ball handling and spins and slices… breathtaking.
More than once Mia reminded herself to focus on the ball, or it might smack her in the face.
Both Mia and Hunter noticed their flawless teamwork. Other than the warm-up against two macho-girls, this is their first game. They didn't talk much about strategies, but their gameplay is synchronized perfectly.
When Hunter moved to the front, she covered the back, and when the ball went to the middle they always knew which one of them will get it and they didn't b.u.mp into each other, not even once.
Mia threw herself in front to prevent the ball to hit the sand, lifting it with the side of her palm toward the net, and Hunter was already in the air right where the ball is at its peak, sending it to the opponent's half of the court and scoring a point.
If they told anyone that they met only yesterday, no one would believe them.
Mia and Hunter were also amazed by the fact how well they move together, responding to each other without a word spoken like they can read each other's minds or predict moves. Fantastic!
