Knowing that Lu Zhishan could easily read her mind, Mu Nanzhi got really upset as well as frustrated. She felt even worse when she thought of the moment when Lu Zhishan said those words to her with his tender eyes fixed on her face.
It was already quite dark when Mu Nanzhi returned Heshuo Princess Mansion. The handkerchief was crumpled after being grasped in her hand for so long. As soon as she walked into her sleeping chamber, Mu Nanzhi quickly slid farther under her covers.
“It can’t be more shameful!” wondered Mu Nanzhi in her mind.
...
It was until the tea, which was prepared for Mu Nanzhi before, turned cold that Song Fu hurried to the kitchen, holding a pallet on which a cup of milk tea and a plate of crab cakes were put. Song Fu placed it on the table and then said to Lu Zhishan awkwardly, “I’m too late, my marquess. Please punish me for my fault!”
Lu Zhishan, meanwhile, just kept his eyes on the crab cakes instead of answering him immediately. It was true that the crab cakes looked pretty good, but crab meat could hardly be seen on them. At the first sight Lu Zhishan knew that it couldn’t be made by a royal pastry cook. After a while, Lu Zhishan looked up at Song Fu questioning, “How long haven’t our cooks made cakes like these?”
Song Fu got more embarra.s.sed when he heard the question. He hesitated for seconds and then answered, “Well, my marquess, there were memorials about you every day in the past two years. Emperor got more unsatisfied with you day by day, so our expenditure was decreased for many times. Marchioness worried about you so much so that she exhorted us not to make troubles. Last year princess gave an order and let many servants leave here to save money. Now there are only twelve servants serving in the mansion and two old women cooking in the kitchen. They are so old that they only know how to make ordinary meals. As for cake, they have never ever made it before. By the way, Marchioness thinks that it is too wasteful to make cakes or cookies so we haven’t made this kind of things for more than two years. I just went to buy this plate of crab cakes just now. But it was too late and most stores had been closed when I reached. I tried hard but finally failed to find almond cheese. Please punish me!”
“Take my token and invite a royal doctor for me.” Lu Zhishan took his token and put it on the table adding, “Call Doctor Qin over here.”
“Marquess, do you feel pain in your leg again?” Song Fu was scared and immediately asked, “Would you like to come back to sleeping chamber to have a rest first?” Lu Zhishan didn’t answer him. Instead, he just waved his hand irritably.
Song Fu then hurriedly went out with the token in his hand.
Seeing the rice left in the bowl, Lu Zhishan covered his face with his hands.
He was not aware of the reason why his father scolded that he was so wayward and betrayed his father’s great favour. Though Lu Zhishan never complained about it, he still felt so depressed in his heart. He served his country fighting on the southwest border. His loyalty could definitely be confirmed on the battlefield. It seemed that his father didn’t understand him no matter how much this emperor loved his first son. However, Lu Zhishan began figuring out the reason now.
It was true that he was so wayward and stubborn these years. He cared about his country and people pretty much, being fiercely ambitious and kept struggling for them. He was not the handsome young boy anymore; instead, he had turned to be a frustrated marquess. He did not regret what he had done during the past twelve years since he truly felt it worthwhile. But he never thought about who were bitterly supporting him and worrying about him at that time.
He always simply thought that it was his persistence that made him be able to realize his dream of protecting his country. But he didn’t realize that so many people were suffering a lot for him. That was why he could do whatever he wanted freely for twelve years.
It never occurred to him that he could be such a terrible person and he had been such a terrible person for such a long time.
