The door to the bathroom opened and Abby stepped out in all leather and really dark makeup. "Abby? What are you doing?" I asked though I really wanted to ask about the last Kethra.
"They're coming," she said as she walked up to me, "tonight. They will be here soon." She reached up and touched my face. "Adam, I want you to stay here, in the house. I don't want you down there." She pleaded as her hands began to tremble. I was worrying about her, it wasn't like her to start trembling unless something was seriously wrong and I figured it had something to do with our circle the other day, she hadn't been the same since.
"What's wrong? What else did you see?"
"You," she started and lowered her eyes. "Ailia had you, you were screaming, then," she stopped and tears began streaming down her face. "Adam, please, just stay here, in the house."
"Okay, I promise, I will stay in here," I whispered as I wrapped my arms around her. I kept holding her. I understood. In the last year, she lost Josh and completely changed.
She suddenly pulled back and whispered, "They're here." She took off walking and stopped at the back gla.s.s. I trailed behind as she realized that Veda and Mitch.e.l.l hadn't left. Silas agreed to keep them safe then turned pale as he realized that the Elders were here. Abby looked around and announced, "Cas, Lott, it's time."
She turned and walked out of the house. As she looked over the cliff, Casimir and Lothair joined her. Then they disappeared over the cliff as they dropped down. I stepped forward, Veda standing beside me. We both worried about Abby and we stood staring at the edge of the cliff where she had disappeared. "How is this going to pan out?" Veda asked.
"No telling, really," Leon answered stepping up to the open door frame behind us.
"Why aren't you guys fighting?" she turned and asked Leon, Silas, and the others. "Aren't they fighting vampires like you?"
"Yes, they are fighting vampires but those aren't vampires like us. We feed on animal blood, they on human blood. They are stronger because of that," Silas informed.
"Not to mention, Dru, Abby had a dream that Leon, Silas and I died at their hands so we decided, or rather she told us not to fight," Aaron explained. "One thing I have learned over the years, if Dru says you are not to fight then you are not fighting unless you want to see her scorn and trust me, you don't," he finished with a laugh.
We all joined in a nervous laugh at the situation.
"So what's going to happen after this is all over?" Veda asked, breaking the nervous laugh between us.

Everyone glanced at each other but it was Silas that answered, "I suppose, Abby will turn Adam, and the prophecy will be fulfilled. We'll stay to help," he finished, looking at me.
"Actually," I started but then I felt pain in my stomach.
The back doors slammed shut leaving all of the vampires inside and the three mortal humans unprotected outside the back doors. The pain surged up my back in waves of stabbing, burning pain. I tried to channel it like Abby had taught me but it was too much and I let out a terrified scream. I felt Veda cradling my head and I managed to open my eyes enough to see the concerned, panic in her face.
"Ailia," I heard Abby say though the rage had changed it slightly. It was deeper and raspy. The pain suddenly stopped and I was finally able to unclench my body. I managed to lift myself up on my elbows to see what was going on.
"Pain," I heard the blond woman, who I could only a.s.sume was Ailia, say. Fear washed over me as I watched Abby, waiting for her to fall in pain. Instead, the Phoenix flames that were dancing on her skin brightened and a smile came across her face.
"Is that all you got, Ailia?" Abby laughed. That was when I realized just how powerful this woman really was and I was thankful that she was on my side. "My turn," Abby said quietly and narrowed her eyes.
Ailia fell to the floor and curled herself into a fetal position. I could see her pain and knew what she was feeling and even though she had just done it to me, I almost wanted to stop it from happening to her. Then Abby began to speak and at what she said, I forgot about stopping it. "Ah, does it hurt, Ailia? Now you know how so many others felt as you tortured them with your thoughts. How my Josh felt before you killed him. How Adam just felt. How does it feel now that the tables have turned?"
Ailia's response was a blood curdling scream that echoed in my mind. That's when I saw him, a tall, dark haired vampire, he had been the one to slam the doors on the others and his sword was still locking it shut. He came around us and leapt onto Abby's back, sinking his teeth into her neck. I could see the pain in her face and the phoenix brightened again.
Abby brought her fist up and connected with his face, knocking him back. She spun around and a half smile crept up on her face. "You do realize that you just signed your death warrant, don't you?" She asked calmly.
I could see his face s.h.i.+ft as he realized that he had. In a flash, he pulled another sword and leapt at Abby. I started to yell to her but she had already brought her samurai sword up and crashed into his, sending him to land next to Ailia who was just getting to her feet.
I lifted myself up to a sitting position as Ailia jumped to her feet, crouched down and lunged at Abby who swatted her down in midair. Ailia landed near Veda and me, as the tall vampire stood up behind Abby. She turned, raised her sword as his clashed with hers. She spun it around and knocked it from his hand then she kicked him in the chest sending him over the cliff.
A shadow caught my attention and I realized Ailia was standing in front of Veda and me with her fingers bent, looking like talons. "Die," she said as she slashed at my throat. In that instant, Veda moved forward, blocking me and Ailia's claws gashed Veda's throat instead.
She fell to the floor and Mitch.e.l.l grabbed her head cradling it in his lap as I tried to put pressure on her throat to stop the bleeding, though it was no use, the gashes were too deep, and she was losing too much blood. She turned pale and I looked up at Mitch.e.l.l apologetically knowing that she was dying because of me. I glanced over at Leon through the gla.s.s and he shook his head to signify not to open the door.
I understood, they were all vampires and Veda was human and bleeding everywhere. There was so much blood. I heard Abby speaking to Ailia, "Die? That's original."
"Just…kill…me," Ailia barely got out and Abby glanced over at Veda then turned back to Ailia.
"No, not yet," Abby answered and lifted Ailia up by her throat. She walked to the edge of the cliff. Abby looked down then said something that I couldn't hear. The look on Ailia's face though said it all.
Abby jumped off of the cliff still holding Ailia's neck and they were gone. I looked back at Mitch.e.l.l who was rubbing Veda's head and crying. I reached over and touched his shoulder and he looked at me. The pain in his eyes was tremendous and I reached over to hug him.
Suddenly, Veda shot up. She stood and turned to look at Mitch.e.l.l and me who were both staring at her.
Veda was alive! She was dead but now she was alive! I saw her fangs, long and sharp behind her upper lip and her now electric blue eyes that looked like Abby's and that's when I realized who the little girl had been. It was Veda!
Mitch.e.l.l scurried to his feet but before he could take a step toward her, a tall man landed on top of the cliff. His dark eyes and nearly black hair accentuated the paleness of his skin. He landed with ease and smiled at Veda. "Stay back!" she yelled and in a millisecond, she had grabbed Mitch.e.l.l and me, unlocked the door and we were all inside.
Then Abby was there and the man turned toward her, sprouted black bat like wings and jumped straight up, disappearing into the clouds. Abby smiled and her wings grew out, big, white and beautiful. She closed her eyes and the pure white feathers turned black as a moonless night. She spread her wings and followed the man into the clouds. I turned to see Veda in Mitch.e.l.l's arms. Everyone was staring at her and she still had fangs and those eyes.
"Veda, close your eyes and tell yourself, 'Everything is as it should be'. That's what Dru did when she was new." I instructed. She did and her eyes were brown again and her fangs were gone.
"Veda, how?" Mitch.e.l.l finally spoke.
Confusion washed over her as she spoke, "I don't know, but somehow I'm a… Kethra?!" she questioned as she searched for an answer from anywhere.
"Yes, you are," Leon answered quietly.
Suddenly, the man who had disappeared into the clouds before Abby came cras.h.i.+ng down, stirring up dirt all around. It floated to the windows and hung there a moment before settling, revealing a crater behind the house. I could see Abby soaring down and gently landed inside the crater with the man. I could only see her head and wings from inside the crater but I could tell the rage was flaring. Her normally dark brown hair was bright fire red and her black wings blazed around her, making her look like a real Phoenix. She reached down and stood the man up, and then she did a spin kick to his chest sending him out over the cliff.
She followed and once Abby was out of view, again, I turned back to Veda who was, I think, just grateful to be alive. "Thank you," I said and she looked at me.
"Don't worry about it," she began with a shrug of her shoulder. "For some reason, I knew that saving you would work out, that somehow everyone would be okay. I knew deep down that I wouldn't or couldn't die. I just did what I felt I had to do," she explained.
As she took a step toward me, the cliff s.h.i.+ned bright and I could see fire, spreading out through the trees. Then it was gone again. We all turned to the cliff and waited, watching for Abby, Lothair and Casimir to appear. A moment later Abby did and I couldn't contain myself; I ran to her and wrapped my arms around her as I asked, "Is it over?" Abby pulled back and looked up into my eyes. I could see the tears on her cheeks and before she could say anything.
"Yes, it is over," Veda said from the door. By Abby's expression, she was surprised as we had been. Veda was alive! And that's all she knew.
