The Collector awoke from whatever psionic influence the female had placed it under and immediately darted backwards. What had transpired did not feel like any kind of psionic a.s.sault that it had been bred against. It had sensed no manipulation of its neurons, no alterations of its sensory organs. It was as if pure memory had simply been instantaneously dumped into its mind.

"Incredible," said the female. She blinked several times. "You're not just a rare creature from a different land. At first, I had pegged you as a curiosity that had emerged from the southern frontier or perhaps from one of the other realms, but you're far, far more interesting than that. Forget not being of this realm, you aren't even of this world."

The Collector's antennae twitched. "You infiltrated my mind, human?"

"Why, yes, I did - it was a two-way connection, remember?" the female said. "Although things went a little awry. I hypothesize it is because you are so different mentally and bodily from me, even more different than a dragon would be. But to think that you come from beyond the stars - not even the G.o.ds believe that there is life outside this world. You have piqued my curiosity immensely."

The Collector approached the female again. "I received little of your memories. I merely gained glimpses into your infancy and maturation. I have gained little insight into this world or of this phenomenon known as magic. This was not part of the deal."

The female shrugged. "There is not much I can do. You are simply too different to perform mental magic on. But I can a.s.sist you otherwise. I can personally teach you of this world and its realms, of magic and sword, of the kingdoms of man, elf, beast, and G.o.d."

"Unnecessary." The Collector swiped across the female's body, shredding it into b.l.o.o.d.y thirds. Though the offer of knowledge was tempting, it could not afford to let a human with potential knowledge of its purpose run about spreading word that it was threatening her planet. It promptly consumed the human, attempting to gain search her memories by using the keyword of 'magic'.

However, oncemore, just as with the other female that utilized magic, the Collector could not extract any memories.

The Collector clicked its mandibles in irritation. How did these primitives manage to safeguard their knowledge to such an extent? From the memories it had glimpsed from the female, it knew that magic allowed these humans to perform incredible feats such as matter manipulation and the creation of life, but how? It would need to find answers soon.

For now, it checked its bioma.s.s.

-Bioma.s.s gained

--Bioma.s.s level 40/100

The Collector paused. From the female it had consumed from the goblin's den, it knew that humans provided five points of bioma.s.s. Yet it had consumed four additional humans just now. It should have five extra points.

A sudden change in wind currents. An unnatural change - they were starting to converge around a single point near the Collector. It drew some distance from the currents and tensed its muscles, readying for attack.

The wind carried golden light that started swirling together into a singularity of s.h.i.+ning white. It grew and grew until it became human-sized and then it became human-shaped. The light faded, and the female was there once more.

"Oh my, I can never quite get used to the feeling of reforming," said the female as she stretched her limbs, making sure everything was in working order.

"You were not consumed," said the Collector in wonder.

The female nodded. "And you're likely wondering why. Well, it's because of magic, which, as I was saying, I would be happy to tell you how it works."

The Collector approached the female again, claws bared. "You must not be allowed to live."

The female stepped back as the Collector approached. "There's no point trying to kill me. When a sorcerer with golden mana crystallizes their knowledge enough times, they become more spirit than mortal. You can't kill me with physical means alone, and, by virtue of you hailing from a distant world, you lack the magic necessary to fully eliminate me."

"Then treat this as an experiment," said the Collector as it lunged forwards, savagely tearing the female's head off. It crushed the tiny head in its hands and let the pulped bone and brain matter fall to the ground, smearing the gra.s.s.

The Collector witnessed as the destroyed organic matter deconstructed into light that coalesced once more into the female's form.

"It's futile." said the female.

"Impossible." The Collector neared the female again, claws still extended. "There is no technology in the galaxy that is capable of not only reconst.i.tuting flesh, but also keeping the mind intact upon complete destruction. You have altered my mind, implanted false senses within me."

The female shook her head. "No such thing, and I do believe you would be immune to most mental magic anyway. I should write that in my notes."

"You will doc.u.ment nothing of me, human." The Collector gored the female on its claws and split her apart into two.

The female reformed again.

The Collector growled. "You cannot do this forever, human."

"I can," said the female. She raised her hands up. "But I don't want to. Listen to me, please."

The Collector stood still and waited.

"I understand you wanting me dead very much. Trust me, I can tell when someone or something wants me dead. It is not quite an unfamiliar feeling. You want me dead because I know you are here to raze this world of life."

The worst case scenario had come to fruition. The female had managed to glimpse the Collector's purpose. She would not leave this forest alive, regardless of how many tries it took to eliminate her. It growled and raised its arm, ready to shatter the female into pieces.

"Verja" chanted the female as she waved a pale hand in front of her.

The Collector's muscular arm slammed down into the female but bounced back off an invisible barrier.

"Forcefield?" said the Collector as it attempted to recall any technology that matched this kind of defense.

"No, a magical s.h.i.+eld," explained the female. "I am not doing this out of self-defense: I have no need to defend myself when I cannot be killed. I am doing this to make a point. I am cursed to never be able to use magic to harm another, but I a.s.sure you there are sorcerers of my caliber who have no such restrictions that are capable of harming you with magic such as this."

The Collector raked its claws across the barrier and found it did not yield to even its monomolecular blades that could slice through hypers.p.a.ce travel worthy metals.

"This magic," said the Collector. "I now understand its danger and potency."

"Yes," said the female. She waved towards the Collector. "And I am offering to teach you about it and more. I will guide you through this world and its realms."

The Collector narrowed its many eyes. "For what purpose, human? You would only be seeking the destruction of your world."

The female laughed. "If you can grow strong enough to end this world, defy the might of man, elves, beasts, and G.o.ds, then you truly do deserve to. And I am not here to defend this world. Once, I may have believed in protecting it, but my efforts have only granted me pain." She fumbled in her robes and withdrew the stick and plant-fiber square. "As an ex-sorceress and current wandering scribe, my only excitement in life is to seek that which is new and doc.u.ment it. And what is more novel, more new, than a creature from another world and its journey to bring the entire world under its grasp and claw? Such a chronicle not even the drunkest of bards would believe!"

"None will be alive to read your doc.u.mentations," said the Collector.

"And that's fine," said the female with a smile. "I don't much care who reads my writing, just that I had the pleasure of seeing and writing something new. If that shall be the end of the world, then so be it."

The Collector growled. "So be it. You will provide me information when I require it."

It could not see a means out of this predicament. The female proved unkillable, but thankfully she did not seek to defend her planet. As to why, it could not fully understand, but it did know that unregulated individuality could create such mental mutants as this female, so disconnected from a sense of collective unity with their species that they would be glad to watch it be razed to the ground rather than defend it. Such was the primitive weakness of individuality within tinkering species.

Whatever it was that drove the female to a.s.sist the Collector, it would capitalize on this female's knowledge and, when it learned of enough magic and gained the means to utilize it, eliminate her for good.
