Before he tried to understand the situation, the soldier rammed him towards the enemy warrior.
At the same time, Abium noticed the masked enemy warrior changed the angle and aimed his sword at him. Abium's expression went pale when he saw the sword aimed straight at his heart. A chill went up to his spine! The change was too sudden, which caused Baron, and the other two Baron's soldiers into confusion.
A sudden calmness took over his former state, and Abium discovered himself flying towards the sword point at a slow pace. No, he believed it was not his body moving slowly, but his thinking time appears to be very faster. He gritted his teeth and attempted to move his body.
[Would you like to nullify the poison? Yes/No]
A regular azure screen appeared in front of his eyes. Abium instantly agreed 'yes' in his mind; then, he sensed his body became under his control.
At the same time, the masked warrior pointed the black sword toward his direction and greeted him. Abium understood the situation. If he didn't try to dodge that strike, then that sword will stab directly into his heart.
Without wasting any time, Abium Immediately applied his sword technique and blocked the opponent's sword. He stepped on the ground and dodged the opponent's multiple attacks. The masked warrior pushed harder and eventually delivered him a deep wound on his shoulder.
Even with his last counterattack, Abium wasn't strong enough to completely prevent the opponent's strike, but with his previous effort, he survived. He now noticed something invading his body from the wound.
A tingling sensation appeared around the wounded area. Abium discovered his own body reacting to that sensation.
He soon s.h.i.+fted his gaze towards the pitch-black sword that masked warrior was holding. It gave off an ominous aura.
He recognized something happening inside his body wound and a.s.sumed it has to do with that sword.
'Cursed sword? No. I sense some similar energy from that sword. Where did I feel this energy?'
He slightly narrowed his eyes and tried to remember everything related to cursed weapons, but didn't found any clue.
He removed the doubts from his head and focused on the battle that continued in front of him. He noticed a change in the emotion from that masked warrior. He appeared to become nervous slightly and was bothered by something.
Abium found the enemy's concentration was affected. Even though the masked warrior wore a mask, he noticed that the masked warrior went into a confused state all of a sudden. He didn't know what the reason for that confusion was, but that slight distraction was all he needed.
Without waiting for the enemy to notice, he quickly sends aura slash skill at the opponent utilizing his last bit of mana. The masked warrior also caught off guard.
Still, at that crucial moment, a cloud of black smoke emerged out of the opponent's body and nullified his attack. Then the masked warrior moved his left hand inside his bag and brought out some scroll.
Abium observed the opponent's action from the beginning and also noted the impact of aura slash was minimal due to the opponent's mastery over elemental qi energy. He a.s.sumed it would only keep the opponent paralyzed for less than a second.
Without thinking further, Abium severed the enemy's left wrist, and at the same time, a small thin scroll fell on the ground along with the masked man's left wrist.
He might use that opportunity to severe opponent's vital spots, but he knew it was tough to kill the opponent. Abium immediately kicked the scroll along with the wrist of the enemy towards the side of the room.
At the same time, Baron immediately went on the berserk state and surprised the two enemy fourth-tier warriors and retreated away towards Abium's right side. Even though it was only a few feets baron knew one small mistake could take one's life.
Baron's eyes remained furious because he never antic.i.p.ated his disciple would betray his ally. Abium stood in between Baron and the enemy. Masked warrior breathing heavily while holding his left hand and looked vigilantly at Abium.
Scarlet drops of blood dripped from his left hand. Abium and Baron didn't allow others to make any move. The masked warrior understands if he needs to seize the scroll and his wrist, then he had to kill both the half-elf and Baron.
He didn't expect the single a.s.sa.s.sination mission turned into a blood bath because of miscalculating that half-elf strength.
'Be wary of that half-elf I mentioned before. Half-elf's strength may compare to only second-tier, but that kid's skills are top-notch. Closely observe his every action and make sure to kill him.'
He now remembered the warning of Watson when they leave on this mission. Meanwhile, Giles attempted to advance closer towards the scroll, but Baron's rough voice stopped his action.
"Don't do anything funny, brat!"
Abium's breath grew more laborious and noticed there was no blood oozing out from the wound on his shoulder.
He checked the wound on his shoulder and found Black spiderweb-like patterns spread around the wounded area. He also noticed magic rune words circling over the wound and preventing these web patterns from expanding towards other regions.
Abium gripped his hand tight and spoke in a cold tone, not at the enemy warrior but at Giles who pushed him.
"Don't think you can get away from this!"
Abium then examined his wound using the scan function and checked how deep the wound. He now noticed more clearly web-like black pattern was trying to invade his body, but these rune letters were moving in a loop around the infected area.
'Someone is attempting to curse your soul, child. You need to improve your spirit quickly.'
Suddenly Abium heard a familiar voice inside his mind. He recognized it was Azolla who was speaking to him. He immediately guessed it must be a severe wound or a curse; otherwise, she won't notify him directly.
'h.e.l.lo, Azolla. It's been a while. How are you?'
'Kid, I don't have enough time to talk with you. I will explain it to you in a few words. Improve your spirit quickly. Stay away from any trouble until you become an official mage.'
'O-okay, I will do that. So, is there anything I need to be aware of?'
Abium asked and looked around his surroundings, but no reply came after that speech.
He suddenly noticed something which frightened him all of a sudden. Everything around him appeared to be in slow motion. He recognized it was the same situation that happened when Giles pushed him towards the enemy.
He concluded it had to do with one of Azolla's Ability. Slowly, Abium blinked his eyes, then found everything became normal. He saw Baron pointing his sword at Giles and questioning him harshly meanwhile other enemy warriors moved towards the masked warrior.
"Giles, why did you push the half-elf kid towards the enemy?"
"I-I... di-didn't mean to do that. I just thought of pus.h.i.+ng him might save your life. See, he didn't die, right?"
Giles replied in a nervous tone at Baron's inquiry then peeped towards his direction from time to time.
Abium also listened to their quarrels, and instantly, his eyes became sharp when Baron mentioned the soldier's name. He heard that name numerous times in the past.
'Giles... Where did I hear that name before? Ah...'
"It was you!"
Abium suddenly stared Giles with wide-open eyes.
The other two soldiers also startled by his sudden voice. Abium now understood why Giles did that. Others might think Giles's action was due to save Baron, but he won't be capable enough to fool Abium.
In the past, n.o.body knows why a.s.sa.s.sins murdered Baron and his followers; everyone said it was a personal grudge, but there was a soldier who survived that a.s.sa.s.sination described others that Baron's disciple plotted the whole a.s.sa.s.sination.
But n.o.body believed him even including Abium, and eventually, he died a week later due to the severe wound during that a.s.sa.s.sination. Giles was the only disciple who had been alive after the murder. No one knew what happened during the a.s.sa.s.sination except Giles.
After the kingdom's higher officials done their investigations and didn't find anything, they finally believed Giles's words.
To honor the old promise to Baron, Margrave Eliot even pa.s.sed Baron's position and t.i.tle to Giles and made him the governor of the Dust gate town. So when Abium overheard Giles's name, his heart grew ice cold.
Abium felt something was off about him from the beginning. He found more puzzled why Giles harmed him using some poison needle and pushed him towards the enemy. Abium didn't know why Giles did that, but he suspected there was a reason.
Cold sweat appeared on his forehead when remembering that crucial moment. If Abium didn't receive aid from Azolla, then he might already be killed by that enemy's sword. Baron's voice awoke him from his deep thought.
"I apologize for my disciple's mistake, kid."
Baron gazed at the black wound on his shoulder and sincerely bowed towards him. Meanwhile, Giles, who stood on the enemy's side, scowled at him from behind with a hateful expression. Abium noticed there was killing intent arising from Giles.
Abium frowned at Giles's behavior and waved his hand at Baron's apology. He didn't have any time to listen to Baron's explanation nor have any patience to settle his score with Giles.
He noticed the masked warrior carrying his pitch-black sword on his right hand and walked near the other two fourth-tier warriors. He took a book from his bag and tossed it towards one of the warriors.
When Baron noticed that book, his eyes went wide, but soon his expression changed into white. His eyes quickly went at Giles and asked him threateningly.
"Giles! What did they promise you to betray me?"
Giles lowered his head and grunted in a low voice.
"I-i didn't betray you, old man. I don't want to live my whole life as a commoner. They guaranteed if I delivered the accurate information, they would make me a new governor of this city."
"What do you mean by the new governor?"
"As I spoke earlier, I want you to be dead here, old man. Guys! Kill him."
Giles desperately requested the enemy warriors then pointed his finger at Baron. But no one moved from the opposition side because everyone was already in a sorry state. Giles also noticed the casualties on the enemy's rear and saw only three third-tier and five second-tier warriors survived.
Giles then turned his gaze towards Abium and yelled,
"Everything was under our control until you came. d.a.m.n, you b.a.s.t.a.r.d!"
"Watson also told his strength was barely a second-tier with some special skills. But I think this time we underestimated our enemy too much."
The other two fourth-tier warriors agreed at masked warrior's reply, and one of the warriors took a bundle of scrolls from his s.p.a.ce ring and tossed it towards other surviving warriors.
"Our mission here is done. Let's go."
The masked warrior spoke in a calm tone; then, everyone tore those scrolls one by one and disappeared from everyone's vision. Abium knew it was a teleportation spell scrolls.
Although it was a one-time use scroll, it's total value might reach around 50 to 80 gold coins. Meanwhile, Giles's expression went pale and pointed his fingers at the masked warrior and said.
"B-but y-you promised to make me as a governor of this town?"
The room went quiet when Giles's voice ended, and loud laughter came out of the masked warrior.
"Hahaha, yes, I did promise that. But we didn't antic.i.p.ate that half-elf to be more powerful. But, we got what we needed, and if we have to kill that half-elf and others to fulfill your promise with my current state, everyone will lose."
masked warrior finished his speech and pulled his sword then spoke to Giles with a wicked smile on his face.
"So, I present you with a parting gift."
He spoke those words and stabbed the black sword into Giles's chest. The black sword entered his chest and arrived at his backside. Meanwhile, the masked warrior, along with his sword, vanished from the place.
A sorrowful cry resounded inside the fortress before Giles's body skin slowly turned black, and his appearance started to change. Within a few seconds, his body began to twitch and suddenly slumped down. Giles's entire surface looked like black web patterns, and Abium immediately knew the ident.i.ty of that pattern.
"I knew it! It is a Demonic sword!"

Abium spoke out loud when he recognized the sword. He looked at the spider web pattern then walked towards Giles's body and continued to explain.
"It is a demonic sword. It only found in Abyss or some other demon realm. I heard it used to curse the soul, and the demon who owned that sword will enslave using that curse."
When hearing his explanation, the other two soldiers started to s.h.i.+ver; meanwhile, Baron inspected Giles's body and tried to touch.
"No, don't touch the body. Those black web may infect anyone who touches."
Baron stopped his moment when Abium explained about the web patterns and asked.
"Kid, is there any cure for this curse? Earlier I saw you injured by that sword."
"I don't have any cure now. But one of my friends knew much about curses. I will be fine for now, so you don't have to worry, my lord."
, Baron nodded at him and walked towards the armory room.
