"This can't go on. I wanted to sever ties with the Marina family for quite some time. Circ.u.mstances don't allow it."
"So where do I come into it?"
"Do you think you can…stop them?"
"I could look into it, but this is a case to choosing the lesser evil. If I agree there will be repercussions with the Marina family. You stick with the Marina Family you will have a riot in your own city."
"You think I am not aware of that? My son is a spoiled brat, and my wife basically controls my city. What the difference between you or her?"
"I will ask you to abdicate and take on a new position."
"And that is?"
"A mayor."
"Isn't that some stupid small town thing?"
"I like to call it the first steps to democracy."
Kedrick fell into his chair, "Will I still have the freedom to rule my people."
"To a certain degree, yes. You will rule the way you see fit but as soon as I find any form of corruption or criminal activities we are going to have a problem."
"I tried and rule with the people in mind, so that is actually agreeable, but on the other hand what do you describe as criminal activities?"

"You will work with Anastacia on that one. She knows how I feel about certain things. You will lay down a form of written law. I will go through it and rectify accordingly. The other thing is that n.o.body will be above that law, even me. Also, a thorough investigation will be done to ascertain if a person is guilty or not. In other words, you are innocent until proven guilty. I will step in with problematic threats. Certain people will gain authority to physically punish someone if need be. I will call them a policing unit. I will have Sinah spearhead that idea. Anastacia, work with Sinah and the Baron to get something both sides will agree with. I will say this now. I will fall under a type of policing unit, so certain laws won't apply to me. I will use the ground to establish a school that both learns and trains the local populace to read and right. Athena will handle any physical training and Juliza and Amara will handle basic tutoring. The more trained the people is the better a city as a whole will run."
Kendrick smiled, "A n.o.ble aspiration, but do you not think that it's going to bite you in the future?"
"Why? Where I am from a child learns to read and write at the age of six."
"They could intercept messages and reveal them to the enemy."
Annixon sat down, it was rather difficult in her current condition. "I would like to bring your attention to a term called cryptography. Later on, I will bring much more efficient methods to the table. We use a basic algorithm at first. In a nutsh.e.l.l, we will use a bunch of numbers on a piece of paper. Using a cipher a person will be able to extrapolate much-needed information while keeping it hidden from prying eyes."
"It all seems so unnecessarily complicated."
"Yeah, it does, but you asked a question and I answered it."
Anastacia asked, "What about Maania and Naitra?"
"That is where the factory will come into play. I want Naitra and D'verg to work with each other. Maania will be split between the school and the factory. I want more aspiring alchemists. They will be much needed later on. Maania can teach the basics of alchemy and magic, while at the same time helping out her grandmother at the factory."
Kendrick sighed, "You've got it all figured out. Let me guess, you will be the reason that people will start to riot."
"Not directly, no. People will start to see the errors in their ways and that's all she wrote. I heard you are taxing the people pretty heavily."
"Not by choice. My wife wanted more money and that was the only way I could see how it would end that, plus there is the emperor that demands one-fifth of all taxes collected."
"Don't worry, I will turn this city into its own independent kingdom, but not yet. I will deal with the Marina Family but that might get other families on our back as well. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if the emperor himself gets in the action. There is a technological age on the way."
"What about the inst.i.tute?"
"What about them?"
"You think they will sit by idly while you open a school right in their backyard?"
"What can they really do? Ask one of the families to place pressure on us? Please, that's going to happen in any case."
He stood up and grabbed his crutch, "Give it some thought. Anastacia, you remain behind to hash out the detail."
Valiant spoke up, "Let me lead you out."
He rose his hand to stop him, "No need. Athena, remain behind and keep an eye on proceedings. Sinah is waiting in the carriage. I will go with her. You can find me when you are done. I still need to visit D'verg."
Annixon left the room and saw Sidero in the hallway. He smiled and said, "You liked what you heard? You can bring your forces but they should be well prepared if they want to face us."
She walked towards him and placed her hand on his chest, "I apologize for getting off the wrong foot. Why don't we go to my room and get comfortable? I for one would love to feel the man that defeated a creature of decay."
He just looked at her in shocked silence, "Wow, that's just wrong on so many levels. Sorry, if one of the girls found out that I slept with a random bimbo on the streets there would be h.e.l.l to pay. I can just as well throw myself back into my grave."
"What they don't know won't hurt them."
"You clearly don't know Sinah or Maania. Sinah will castrate me and Maania will straight-up murder me. Sorry I fear them why too much for a quickie."
"You don't know what you are missing."
"I live with better. I hope to see you on the battlefield."
She looked at his back, and smiled malevolently, "It's going to be so much fun crus.h.i.+ng you."
