When, at last, they went inside, most of them still couldn't help but be scared. After all, getting killed by a hundred rat-bites was a pretty awful way to go. Despite this none of them thought of retreating, this was because of the 'Blind Follower' trait and the respect they had for their lord.
Geralt was one of the men in this group. He was part of the first batch of farmers and had already seen all kinds of things happen. At first, he was trained in an exceptionally harsh way by Commander Green, after this, he was sent to fight the goblins.
After a crazy brawl, he was pushed back to the city wall. As he saw all the other surviving soldiers being in a similar situation he was sure he was going to die. No matter how fierce he seemed to fight the goblins just ignored it scratching him all over.
It was then he truly met the Lord. First, he saw a man casually strolling along the battlefield, and just a moment later, goblins started dying by a single hit. He felt that if all these goblins were to attack this man at the same time, even then would they all be slain. This gave him an inexplainable strength as if he was filled with power, and so the battle quickly concluded.
After all that happened, he accompanied the lord to a goblin's nest. Where they saw a terrible scene. Something still etched within his mind. Yet when they encountered a particularly ugly scene, he hadn't given the order they all feared at that moment. Instead, he stepped forward and delivered mercy himself.
At this point, he believed in this man unconditionally, as if it had always been his sole purpose to follow him.
"Attack the ones that are on their own first, we will whittle them down."
Jay wasn't too worried about the other rats finding the bodies of the rats they killed. After all there were large piles of bones and a bunch of dead rats everywhere anyways. It seemed like in order to survive, this species simply cannibalized. Killing their kin for food and energy.
Only killing a rat here and there, the group slowly made its way to the other side of the room. The plan was to first make their way to the other door before killing 100 rats. This way they could retreat at any time while still progressing.
In the end, this seemed to be going exceptionally well. Most rats seemed to be sleeping within holes inside the pillars and the rats in their way were quickly disposed of.
Other than a single occasion where they accidentally alarmed 5 rats at once, the journey went smoothly. Now, they had reached the other door after killing about 50 rats. They had killed all small groups of roaming rats only leaving a few pillars filled with rats nearby.
Deciding to once again try stealthily picking these rats off, the group's spear bearers came forward, stabbing their first victims before quickly backing off.
Unexpectedly every rat not only in that pillar but in the entire room instantly came to life, rus.h.i.+ng at them all at once. The rats instantly rus.h.i.+ng at them all even shocked Jay. He had somewhat expected the rats on that pillar to awaken but the entire room was too much for them to handle.
When he tried to open the door behind them, it wouldn't open. It seemed that they were trapped. Not seeing anything around them to use either, they couldn't do anything but fight these 1 meter long rats.
An onslaught of rats came, the first few dozen were quickly killed, running into the spears themselves, yet the rats climbed over each other rapidly, ignoring the fallen comrades before them.
The second row of rats was killed by the axemen and swordsmen. Thus giving the spear bearers the time to pull their spears out in order to take the next line of rats. Meanwhile, Jay shot a tiny shard of ice at any rat that seemed to be getting through, delaying them so that his men would be able to take them out.
It seemed to go well as soon the quest was completed, yet n.o.body cheered as they had only killed about a fifth of the attacking rats.
Yet soon tragedy struck. It could only be said they had insufficient gear really, as one of the spears broke in half after stabbing a particularly large rat.
The very next moment Jay was forced to take his place, making him unable to slow any of the rats that were about to breach the line of defense.
One after another breached, biting the ankles of the warriors before them, completely messing up their rhythm. As expected, this caused the situation to instantly take a turn for the worst. As more rats came through, the first victim fell. One of the prettier women in their military was the first to fall prey to the rats.
Within just a few seconds of falling down, her body was completely torn to shreds making her let out a horrifying scream.

At this point, the group was entirely split up. It seemed like most soldiers headed to some cracks in the walls that were easier to defend. While they were forced to leave Jay let out a bloodthirsty aura.
He was the only person the rats seemed to hesitate to attack since their instincts told them he was dangerous.
Taking advantage of their unwillingness to attack, Jay started slaughtering them by the dozens, completely letting his defense fall.
As more agonizing screams were heard, he moved faster and faster, completely forgetting about anything other than killing as many of these as he could. Guts and blood covering him from head to toe.
One of his attacks caused a rat to fly against the door they were standing at earlier, making the door burst open.
"The door is open!!"
A yell came from one of the survivors as everyone moved towards the door as quickly as they could. Meanwhile, Jay's head was still full of killing when he saw the door open. Yet when he saw all survivors had entered and were holding it desperately waiting for him, he managed to get a moment of clarity, swiftly disposing of a few more rats before heading through the door, promptly closing it behind him.
In the end, only 4 soldiers remained. Each of them with a number of ugly bites on their legs, causing them to promptly fall down once the adrenaline subsided. Jay also suddenly felt exhausted as he sat down to rest, finally taking a look at the notification he got earlier.
Mission: kill 100 rats completed.
Reward: 10 health potions, next door has been unlocked.
