At three o’clock in the morning Meng Jinyang opened her eyes and was startled when she saw the dim light coming from behind Gu Mang’s bed curtain.

She got down from bed lightly, afraid of waking up her roommates. Carrying a hot water bottle, lunch box, and milk, she went to the balcony to heat up the milk.
