Chapter 304: Shaken
It took only a single hit from the snakehead staff to almost bring the roof of a building down.
Yet, the strike did not manage to break the barrier above the base.
“What’s with the barrier?” The crone looked into the vaguely visible barrier in the dark of night. There was a tinge of unease seen in her eyes.
The standard of that barrier far exceeded what she antic.i.p.ated. It was so st.u.r.dy that even an Airborne Realm being like her would have difficulty breaking it.
It was not to say that she was unable to break the barrier; it was just that she needed a lot of time to do so.
Unfortunately, time was what she lacked most at the moment as well. Not only was she unable to get Lu Xuan to show up, but she was unable to even break through the Heavenly Palace in time.
That barrier was naturally something erected by Lu Xuan himself. He finally decided what happened last, to set up the barrier throughout the Heavenly Palace base.
He could erect something even more powerful, so powerful that the crone would not have been able to break through it at all.
However, the cost of doing so was simply too great.
Many materials required for setting up such a barrier were not things that could be found on the planet very easily. This problem saw the restoration of Spirit Qi in full force not too long ago.
Furthermore, setting up even just as it was at the moment, took a lot of resources from the Special Task Force’s vault. That barrier was already the best that could be erected on the planet at the moment.
The crone looked very grim upon not bringing down the barrier of that base in a single strike.
Several beams of frightening energy tore through the air, heading straight for the crone from afar.
“What is that?” The crone sensed an intense threat from those incoming beams.
The crone fired several terrifying beams of her own almost instinctively, clas.h.i.+ng with those incoming beams and bringing about explosions in the air. Those beams were missiles fired from a military base not far away.
That crone felt her arm shaking for a tiny bit. The shockwave caused by the explosion made her clothes billow in the wind.
Luo Ying, who was right behind her, felt as if she was about to drop from the sky.
She was rather puzzled as to what managed to bring that much force to bear.
Those things did not look like power items to the crone, as power items usually conjured bursts of energy attacks when they worked. Yet, those “power items” that worked using by physical attacks were things that she had never seen before.
She was able to imagine that if she were to let her guard down and one of those things. .h.i.t her, she would have been severely injured despite her formidable resilience.
She was able to tell that those things packed a force equal to that of power items self-destructing; however, she could not fathom how come anyone could afford to throw that many power items around, just letting them self-destruct just like that. She wondered just how wealthy the crazy one doing it had to be, as this took a lot of money and resources.
However, countless flickers of those things were seen coming at her from above before she could continue figuring things out.
Those things were almost at her face before long.
Rocket-propelled grenades were seen being fired at the crone from all sides from afar.
“d.a.m.n it!” That crone almost felt utter destruction loomed above her in an instant. It was entirely possible for even an Airborne Realm being to die being bombarded by so many weapons like that.
Booooommm!
Explosion after explosion erupted all over the place. The rumble alone was so loud that it almost felt adequate enough to bring the roof down, and the lights were bright enough to light the place like it was daytime.
Everyone from the base knew that it was probably the work of the military base nearby.
While Airborne Realm fighters were indeed terrifying, there was only so much they could do when facing off against the military.
Saturated bombardment from modern military forces was not something contemporary cultivators could take down, after all.
Everyone was able to see just how bad the crone looked as she stayed airborne. She was wobbling in the air, feeling like she would fall from the sky if she was not holding herself up.
A s.h.i.+eld was seen hovering right before her. That bronze s.h.i.+eld looked dull and broken. The s.h.i.+eld lost all its sheen after having taken on the barrages of explosions from the explosive projectiles.
While the crone managed to keep herself in one piece, the act depleted most of her Spiritual Qi reserves.
The crone could not fathom just how military weapons could become so powerful within just hundreds of years.
In the past, such drastic changes with things would not have been possible even after one whole millennium pa.s.sed, let alone several hundred years.
She was aghast to find that the military of mortal governments could come up with such weapons in the centuries she spent outside of Earth.
If it had not been for the defensive power item that she carried with her, she would have probably died on the spot.
That was a result of her never knowing just how terrifying modern weapons could be. If it had been the other cultivators on Earth, none of them would have even entertained the idea of taking on such carpet-bombing attempts. All of them would have thought of ways to flee before the attacks came.
The crone finally realized that the operation did not seem as easy as she thought it would have been.
In the few moments she took to catch her breath, yet another round of bombardment came from afar, heading straight for the crone from all directions.
She finally learned her lesson that time. She dared not to stay around. She took Luo Ying running right away, disappearing from the sky like a beam of light.
Those from the Heavenly Palace base were only relieved by then.
“Seems like we’re finally safe now.”
Some let out a long sigh of relief.
Even the likes of Airborne Realm fighters were still wary of modern weapons, after all.
“d.a.m.n, so that is someone at Airborne Realm, then? She managed to survive that many missiles being fired at her!?” Someone finally caught up with what just happened moments ago. While that crone had indeed fled, the level of power she demonstrated left them all very frightened.
If they had been the ones fighting her, they would have probably been severely injured or even killed, even if they were at the Celestial Realm.
Barrages of bullets from all directions were more than able to kill a Celestial Realm being who happened to be a sitting duck, after all.
But then again, no cultivators on the planet at the moment would be so obstinate and reckless.
That fact alone made it clear of just how formidable Airborne Realm beings were. They indeed looked more like celestial beings instead, when compared to common Celestial Realm cultivators.
If it had been ancient, feudal times instead of modern times, no one would have been able to move someone like that.
Government authorities of ancient times would have probably been begging on their knees upon seeing those cultivators at work. There were simply no ways of fighting such beings, after all.
Doctors came to tend to Duan Shan before long.
Duan Shan remained on the stretcher as she said, “Inform the Palace Lord at once. We’re in big trouble now.”
While they managed to repel that terrifying crone by borrowing the military forces’ might, but no one could easily guard against such terrifying beings for prolonged periods, after all.
They would all die by the crone’s hands sooner or later unless they could take her out first.
She had only been caught off guard and got bombarded where she stood because she had no idea what she was dealing with, causing her Spiritual Qi to be almost completely depleted.
It was absurd to just a.s.sume that so she was still going to be that careless next time, and by then, not even the military would have been able to stop her.
They had no way of taking on such an inhuman being capable of flying around like that.
Lu Xuan was entirely on his own next.
That battle was quickly known throughout the world before long. Everyone knew that the Heavenly Palace personnel truly met their match, and it was really a formidable adversary in all sense of the word.
The thought of an Airborne Realm being showing up alone was enough to make many shudder in fear.
