Chapter 982: Earthquake
Brigadier General Meadrey was quite the public figure. His fanatism wasn't a secret, and he even had a series of battles under his belt.
Hence, the General's abilities and character were available to anyone with the right clearance level. Needless to say, Khan was among them, and the short trip gave him the perfect time to study the data and potentially change the preplanned battle strategy.
Sadly, nothing peculiar popped out. Brigadier General Meadrey was strong and experienced but not unique. His fire element gave him access to many stored spells, making him an all- rounder in battle. From the reports, he also looked quite the capable leader, so Khan couldn't find weaknesses to exploit.
Lieutenant Dyester had reached the same conclusion before the departure, but Khan hoped his unique perspective would reveal different answers. That wasn't the case, so Khan could only resort to an overwhelming show of force.
That was the initial plan and something Khan was very strongly inclined toward. Politics aside, he was livid about his soldiers' deaths, and no amount of s.e.x could appease that feeling. If anything, his anger grew as the Leviathan approached its destination.
The appointed planet was relatively nearby, closer than Senerth. The route was also known and protected so the Leviathan could move at full speed, disregarding certain safety measures.
By the end of the third day, the Leviathan's scanners captured a big, yellowish planet with occasional green spots. Its official name was Gadus R, and the s.h.i.+p didn't take long to deal with the landing procedures and reach its...o...b..t.
The Leviathan adjusted its position but remained outside the Gadus R's atmosphere. Meanwhile, a series of s.h.i.+ps detached from it to dive toward the planet's surface. The rides weren't on autopilot but followed prearranged routes, eventually reaching the appointed landing area.
Unlike Baoway, Gadus R's landing area had extensive human presence. Buildings of various nature and multiple teams encircled it, dealing with the disembark. The Global Army had moved quickly to arrange the place, and the alien battalion benefited from it.
That was a strange change of pace for the Scalqa. It was their first time being welcomed by human forces, especially in such a respectful manner, but no one let the strange experience affect their behavior. The Scalqa simply followed Khan and imitated him, acting as perfectly loyal and trained soldiers.
Things weren't as easy for the human teams. They had seen the Scalqa on the network or through other channels, but being face-to-face with such giant aliens left a deep impression in their minds.
The Scalqa were infamous for being a primitive species with little longer than a year of proper training under their belts. However, the human teams saw a compact, orderly, and stern battalion that found no problem wielding firearms and dealing with language barriers. The army actually looked quite imposing.
Of course, the human teams couldn't possibly know that the battalion was on its best behavior due to Khan's presence. Lieutenant Dyester had done wonders with its training, but the Scalqa remained Scalqa. They were quickly evolving into a more advanced species, but the gap was still vast.
Khan ignored the strange surrounding symphony and focused on his task. His anger threatened to explode after the landing, putting him in a purely battle-focused mindset. No salutes could distract him while his glowing eyes stared at the horizon.
The landing area was part of a simple settlement. Vast metal streets surrounded it, heading toward various checkpoints and similar encampments. One of them had a fortified structure at its end, and Khan recognized it as his target.
Even Khan's heightened view couldn't reach such a distant building, but he knew it was there. The symphony also told him the place was packed with soldiers. Brigadier General Meadrey was ready for the siege, but the battle had to wait for the following morning.
"Prince Khan," A soldier with some authority mustered his courage and called him. "We have prepared quarters for your army. They are close to the arranged battlefield, but we have orders to modify them at your request."
The soldier handed Khan a device that described the army's quarters' details. The place was nothing more than a glorified encampment near the fort, but its facilities were acceptable." "As for your quarters, Prince Khan," The soldier continued while Khan studied the device. "The stationed Major has already vacated hers. She hopes you'll rest in the settlement and accept her dinner invitation."
"I'll rest with my soldiers," Khan immediately refused. "Warn Brigadier General Meadrey. I'll begin the siege at dawn."
The soldier wanted to argue but didn't bother to try. Khan didn't even look at him, but the pressure he exuded was too much for that single warrior. Khan also donned his red cape and crown, creating an alien barrier between him and the human teams.
"As you wish, Prince Khan," The soldier accepted. "We have arranged refreshments in the army's quarters, and your rides will come shortly."
"They won't be needed," Khan stated, handing back the device before marching forward. The soldier didn't know what to say, but that issue soon left his mind. Khan didn't give any orders, but the Scalqa started marching behind him as soon as he moved. Those huge aliens looked ready to trample anything in their path, so the warrior hurried out of their way.
Similar scenes happened all around the landing area. The Scalqa advanced in an orderly manner, forcing the human teams to make way for their march. That imposing sight was outs.h.i.+ned only by the person leading the battalion, but his figure soon disappeared behind a wall of bulging muscles.
The human teams quickly drew their devices to inform the parties interested in the matter, but a strange phenomenon interrupted their actions. The landing area's metal floor started to tremble as a rhythmical noise reached the soldiers' ears. An earthquake invaded the settlement, but its center gradually moved away, approaching the distant fort.
Gulps unfolded everywhere. The settlement's soldiers knew the battle's specifics, and some had even helped set up the fort's defenses. Reason put Khan's battalion at a complete disadvantage, but those biases crumbled now.
The alien battalion could make the ground tremble with its mere advance, so how could a fort endure its fury?
