Chapter 179: Delivering A Newborn

Su Ying returned to her room after bathing and found Xiao Jin writing something on the desk. She walked over curiously and saw that there seemed to be some kind of drawing on the paper. “What is this?”

“The method to set up the Delusional Array Formation,” Xiao Jin said as he raised his head.

“Delusional Array Formation?”

“Mm-hmm. In order to prevent outsiders from discovering the Tiger Base, I plan to set up an array formation outside the base camp. I want to enclose this area into the protection range.”

In reality, the Tiger Base was located in a relatively hidden place. If they hadn’t been brought to the Tiger Base by those few people from the Tiger Base who wanted to collect the road toll earlier, they might not have been able to locate this place successfully.

However, an additional layer of protection meant an additional level of safety. Su Ying was very supportive of Xiao Jin’s plan to set up the array formation.

“Good. This range is just right. If it’s a little bigger, it’ll attract the suspicion of outsiders.”

“That’s right.”

Su Ying yawned. “I’m tired. I’m going to sleep.”

She walked to the bed and lay down. The two little fellows immediately burrowed into her arms.

“Mother, did you miss me?” The younger toddler Ling lifted her tiny head from Su Ying’s arms and looked at her with antic.i.p.ation.

“Of course 1 did. Did Ling miss Mother?”

Ling nodded her head like a chick pecking at rice. “Yes, 1 missed you so much.”

Su Ying then pinched the older toddler Ji’s tiny face. “Ji, did you miss Mother too?”

The older toddler Ji’s small face didn’t display any visible emotion, but his two eyes were sparkling brightly. He looked at Su Ying and replied in a childish voice, “I missed you.

“Then did Mother miss Father?”

Xiao Jin, who was about to lie down on the bed, p.r.i.c.ked up his ears.

“Mm-hmm. I guess so,” Su Ying said after a short pause.

She recalled her feelings after leaving the Tiger Base. It seemed that other than wanting to quickly replenish her supplies and sell off the charcoal, she didn’t really think about anything else.

However, when she saw the looks of antic.i.p.ation in the eyes of the two little ones, she still nodded her head against her conscience.

Xiao Jin’s eyebrows arched upwards unwittingly. When he lay down on the bed, he had a smile on his face.

Su Ying began humming a strange yet melodious tune softly. Her voice sounded particularly low and pleasant in the darkness, and the siblings fell asleep while listening to her soft humming.

The mountain wind swept away the dark clouds, and golden rays broke through the firmament. Su Ying woke up to the crowing of a rooster.

When she opened her eyes, she heard the sound of three little ones reading out loud from upstairs. Their sweet, angelic voices made Su Ying feel refreshed and comfortable.

Su Ying got up, washed up, and ran to the livestock shed in the backyard. After conducting a rough stock counting, they had twenty to thirty cows and goats each, twenty to thirty pigs, and even more chickens, ducks, and geese.

She looked at her a.s.sets with satisfaction. The more she looked at them, the happier she became.

“Mistress, why did you wake up so early? Aren’t you going to sleep in a little longer?” A woman wearing a headscarf walked out of the pigsty with a large bucket of pig manure in her hand.

Su Ying took a look and saw that it was Li Laosan’s wife, Madam Hu. A while ago, they were short of manpower and couldn’t cope, so Madam Jiang invited Madam Hu over to help take care of the livestock.

Madam Hu was diligent and efficient. She was able to take care of these livestock very well every day.

However, now that there were so many additional livestock all of a sudden, Madam Hu probably couldn’t handle it alone.

“I came over to take a look after I’ve slept enough. If you are unable to take care of so many animals, I can get a few more people to come over.”

However, Madam Hu said, “It’s alright, Mistress. Actually, there’s not much work to do. It’s just sweeping and feeding. I can handle it alone.”

With so many livestock, it was definitely tiring for Madam Hu to manage them all by herself, but Su Ying had done her family a great favor. She had even given Li Laosan a job so that they could have a chance to fill their stomachs. Therefore, no matter how tiring the work was, she would grit her teeth and persevere. Besides, she wasn’t doing the job for free. Madam Jiang would give her some food every day when she went back, so she was already very contented.

Su Ying saw that although Madam Hu’s face was thin, she was still quite energetic, so she said, “Then you carry on with this job first, Aunt Hu. If you can’t cope, I’ll look for two more people to help.”

“Alright. If 1 really can’t cope, 1 won’t force myself.”

Madam Hu placed the pig manure on one side. In a while, Madam Jiang would send someone here to collect the manure and bring it to the wasteland to nourish the soil.

“Gos.h.!.+ Why is this cow’s stomach so big? Don’t tell me it’s about to give birth?”

Just as Su Ying was about to leave, she heard Madam Hu’s soft exclamation. She turned around and walked back.

She had almost forgotten that when she was buying the livestock, an old man had said that the cow he was selling was already pregnant and would give birth soon. If not for his grandson’s illness, he would not have been willing to sell the pregnant cow. She remembered that the price of this cow was indeed higher than the other cows.

“Is the cow about to give birth?” When Su Ying arrived at the cowshed, she saw a cow lying on the ground with a big belly, looking very tired.

It wasn’t easy for them to drive these animals back, and Su Ying didn’t want anything to happen to them. She opened the cowshed and walked in.

“Aunt Hu, do you know how to deliver a cow’s calf?”

“I haven’t really done this before,” Madam Hu said with a worried look.

Su Ying saw the cow lying on the ground in anguish, its body twitching from time to time. She speculated that it was about to give birth.

Moo!

When the cow saw Su Ying and Madam Hu approaching, it cried out anxiously. Perhaps it was because the cow was not familiar with the two of them coupled with the already unbearable pain, it became even more panic-stricken.

Su Ying thought for a moment before standing up. “Aunt Hu, keep an eye on it first. Don’t startle it. I’ll be right back.”

Su Ying turned around and left the cowshed. Then she went to an obscure spot and entered the interspatial store.

She had no experience in delivering cow’s calf, so she could only come in to look for information.

After flipping through the information, she found what she needed from the interspatial store and returned to the cowshed.

Moo!

The cow seemed to be in greater pain. It might be because it was having a difficult labor, so it no longer had the strength to give birth.

Su Ying put on her gloves and walked up behind the cow to comfort it. “Don’t worry. I’m here to help you.”

Moo!

It was not known whether the cow had understood Su Ying’s words, or if it had simply lost the strength to struggle. When Su Ying got closer, it stopped moving.

Su Ying reached her hand into the cow’s body and grabbed the calf’s front hoof. When the cow’s body convulsed, she synchronized her movements with the cow’s convulsions and slowly pulled the calf out. After pulling the calf out a little, she tied the rope she had prepared to the calf’s front hoof and handed the other end of the rope to Madam Hu.

“Aunt Hu, take this. When I ask you to pull later, you pull.”

“Alright.”

Su Ying stretched out her hands and pushed down on the cow’s belly. When the cow suddenly exerted force, Su Ying yelled to Madam Hu to pull hard.

The two of them coordinated with each other for almost fifteen minutes before a calf was finally born.

After the calf was born, the cow collapsed to the ground in exhaustion. Su Ying quickly fed the cow the fodder that had been soaked in the nutrient solution which she had prepared in advance.

After Su Ying helped the calf to settle down, she left the cowshed with Madam Hu. By now, the two of them were already covered in grime.

When Bai Shuang walked into the livestock shed and saw Su Ying and Madam Hu walking out covered in blood, she cried out in shock..
