Chen Lian, however, driven by a sense of justice for Xia Ye, seemed undeterred, hands on her hips, ready to escalate the confrontation.
Xia Jiang, covering Chen Lian’s mouth, turned to Xia Hai. “This is a family matter, best kept from outsiders. Let’s discuss this inside.”
Xia Jiang, gently guiding Chen Lian, attempted to enter.
Chen Lian resisted, but Xia Jiang, his expression stern, whispered, “Haven’t you embarra.s.sed yourself enough? Do you wish to worsen the situation?”
Momentarily stunned, Chen Lian eventually acquiesced, bowing her head as Xia Jiang nudged her forward.
Xia Chen and Xia Feng blocked their path.
“No!” Xia Feng spoke first. “You can’t enter until you clarify matters!”
“You’ve slandered Wanwan publicly, causing misunderstandings. Clarify this before entering!” added Xia Chen, barring Xia Jiang and Chen Lian’s way. Xia Hai, about to interject, was silenced by Yan Han’s stern gaze.
Rarely subjected to such treatment, Xia Hai instantly fell silent.
Xia Wan stepped forward, confronting Xia Jiang and Chen Lian. “Second Uncle, Second Aunt, you’ve caused quite a scene, accusing me of harming Xia Ye.
“I must ask, how did I supposedly harm her? What exactly did I do?”
Chen Lian, incensed at Xia Wan’s questioning, pulled away Xia Jiang’s hand and exclaimed, “Our Xia Ye was a fine young woman, with a marriage arrangement in place, set to be engaged by year’s end.”
“It’s your influence that led her to bad company! Now, she’s…” Chen Lian’s voice cracked, overcome with emotion.
“And what happened next?” Xia Wan pressed on. “If you’re accusing me, be specific!”
“It’s all your fault! Because of you, she encountered that despicable man! Had you not introduced her to such questionable characters, she wouldn’t have…” Chen Lian burst into tears, completing her accusation.
Xia Jiang quickly silenced her again.
“Didn’t we agree not to speak of this?!” he scolded. “Regardless of your lack of shame, consider Xia Ye’s reputation!”
“Now, what will people think of her?”
Xia Jiang’s rebuke seemed to awaken Chen Lian.
She sobbed louder, fretting, “What will become of our Xia Ye? How can I face the future?”
As Chen Lian spiraled into despair, Xia Wan stepped closer, taking hold of her elbow with a firm grip. “Second Aunt, please, don’t distress yourself. Should anything truly befall Xia Ye, as relatives, we will certainly not ignore it.”
“However, if you’re alleging that I led her into a situation where she was violated, I categorically deny such an accusation.” Xia Wan’s clear, audible words left no doubt for the onlooking neighbors.
