81 Get Married If You’re Poor
“Where are you going? We can talk about you and Xia Ru later.” Li Jin wanted to call out to Xia Jiang, but he didn’t allow her to do so. He rushed into the house.
Seeing this, Li Jin could only say to Liu Hua, “Wait here for a while. We’ll discuss it. You can wait here first.”
Liu Hua only stopped complaining when she heard them relent. “Sure, we can wait.”
Even though Liu Hua was no longer noisy, her previous outburst had been heard by the neighbors. The village was only so big, and after today, the whole village would know about Xia Ru’s secret meeting with a boy.
Xia Chen looked at Xia Wan. “What should we do now? Should we follow them?”
Xia Wan smiled. “Of course I’m going. Grandmother has always doted on Xia Ru. She’ll definitely scold her now. How can I miss such a lively event?”
Xia Chen’s lips twitched helplessly, but he still followed Xia Wan to Xia Ru’s room to eavesdrop.
He knew that this was a bad habit, but he was actually looking forward to it.
Although Li Jin valued men more than women, he treated Xia Ru and Xia Ye better than his grandson. Xia Chen was not made of stone, and of course, he had his own emotions. He did not understand why Grandma did not like him when he was hardworking and did not even dare to eat too much meat during meals.
In the past, he would bring this matter up to Yan Han, but Yan Han would only pull a long face and say that this had nothing to do with him. He said that it was Li Jin who didn’t like her and that he didn’t like the children she had given birth to either.
Now that the person Li Jin had been praising had made a fool of himself and was blocked at the door, Xia Chen suddenly felt that the pressure on his heart had disappeared.
It turned out that if Li Jin didn’t like someone, the person must be of a good character.
Li Jin didn’t like his sister, Xia Wan, for instance. However, his sister was very capable, successfully haggling and easily gaining the trust of the stall owners, who said that his sister was amazing.
Xia Chen thought that if he were to use the money to buy clothes, he would definitely be schemed against.
Even if Xia Ru were to go, she would not really know the starting price of these clothes and how to bargain with the stall owners.
The granddaughter that Li Jin often praised was now the object of ridicule. Xia Wan, who Li Jin looked down on, was praised by many people in the city.
It was not until this moment that Xia Chen realized they were never the ones in the wrong. They should’ve never based their standards on Li Jin’s judgment.
Just then, Xia Jiang’s questioning voice came from inside the house.
“Who told you to look for Liu s.h.i.+? why did you look for him so late at night? You want to be his wife? Xia Ru, what have I taught you? How could you do such a shameless thing? Now, you’ve embarra.s.sed us too!”
As the eldest in the family, Xia Jiang was more concerned about his reputation. Xia Ru was the only daughter in his family, and he didn’t even have a son. Thus, he felt he couldn’t compare to his second son’s family.
Although Xia Ru didn’t get into high school, she could earn money, and Li Jin liked her. Hence, he was quite satisfied with Xia Ru. She often told him about the boys she met in the factory and how outstanding they were, going as far as to say that when she got promoted and headed to the city, she would meet more outstanding boys and bring them to live in big houses.
That was why he had always trusted Xia Ru. But now, she was actually on a date with Liu s.h.i.+? Xia Jiang looked down on Liu s.h.i.+ and felt that Xia Ru had been lying to him.
Xia Ru was still covering her body with her things, and when she heard Xia Jiang’s question, she retorted, “Dad, I didn’t go on a date with Liu s.h.i.+. They’re just making it up.”
Xia Jiang sneered and threw the candy wrapper on the bed. take a look at this. You’re the only one in our village who bought this candy. Now, someone is here with the wrapper, saying that we either pay him a thousand yuan or cure his illness. Tell me, what should we do?”
Xia Ru saw the candy wrapper, and her heart froze for a moment.
She thought of something and almost screamed, “They’ve already told everyone about this?”
Xia Jiang saw his daughter losing her composure and understood that what Liu Hua said was true. Xia Ru had gone to see Liu s.h.i.+.
“You’re panicking now? How did I give birth to such an embarra.s.sing thing? Our family can’t afford it. If you can’t, then marry Liu s.h.i.+. I’ll treat it as if I never had a daughter like you.
Xia Ru was dumbfounded. What did her father say? Just because he didn’t have a thousand yuan, he wanted her to marry Liu s.h.i.+?
