Tonysaid"Charming"underhisbreathandbegantopullinthelines."Heard enough,haven'twe?Thatsecondbugisonthetopfloor,facingthestreet."

Tonyputthesingleoaroverthesternoftheboatandwithoutfussorhurry paddledusofftowardswherewe'dsetout,againsttheswirlingincomingtide.I rolledupthefis.h.i.+nglinesandunbaitedthehooks,myfingersabsentminded whilemythoughtspositivelygalloped.

THEHOURSpa.s.sedslowlywiththemixtureoftensionandboredomthatIimagined soldiersfeltwhenwaitingbeforebattle.Halfofthetimemypulseratewasup inthestratosphere,halfthetimeIfeltlikesleep.Atonlyonepointdidthe watchjerkfromstandbytonerve-racking,andthatwasatmidday.
