There was a large building at Seoul Station .
It had become the building of the Korean Awakening Society .
The work of the Awakening Society was very diverse .
Its role spanned various fields, including determining whether people were awakened, registering awakened people, preventing physical damage and injury to the ordinary people, rebuilding and cleaning up damage after incidents, and running regular patrols to guard against monster incursions .
It appointed five second-cla.s.s awakeners as “guardians”, and also rostered three first-cla.s.s awakeners as a “special missions” team .
Atop of the building two men and woman stood blankly, watching the streets below .
One of the men held a cup of coffee in one hand .
He was a man with thick white hair tightly gathered and tied . His age could be a.s.sumed to be somewhere from the 50s to 60s, but his eyes still looked youthful .
The man extended his cup of coffee to the woman standing next to him . The woman pointed her finger into the air, and small pieces of ice condensed where she directed . The ice cubes neatly landed in the man’s coffee, bobbing as they melted .
The man took a quiet sip .
“Chae-yeon . ”
The woman was Chae-yeon, the guardian of Sinchon, also known as the Ice Witch .
“Yes?”
“It’s hot,” the man muttered gravely .
“It’s hot? Sir, would you like some ice?”
The new man replying was Yoo Jin-soo, the president of the Awakening Society .
“No . ”
Yoo Jin-soo was a man who was hard to see, only available during the rarely occurring important meetings .
“Summer is best when it’s hot,” the white-haired man added with a grin .
He stood absent-mindedly, mulling over his drink, before speaking again .
“By the way, are they truly gone?”
“Yes . ”
Chae-yeon nodded .
Not long ago, the plant, which had begun to grow on the outskirts of Sinchon, was quite a problem .
It was a plant-type monster called Mandragora, with the size and appearance of a child’s upper body . It even had a standard humanoid face, with eyes, a nose, and a mouth .
The Mandragora naturally grew buried in the ground, like a tuber . From the perspective of someone standing on the ground it looked just like a vegetable, no different from a radish or cabbage .

But if a person touched it, a catastrophic event would occur . This was because when the plant felt threatened it would spray a poison a great distance around itself, with a radius of almost a kilometer . Even worse, the poison required a very specific antidote to cure . It was an innocuous yet deadly plant, capable of instantly killing many ordinary people, and even low-grade awakeners .
Plus, an antidote didn’t solve everything . This was because when a Mandragora was uprooted, it screamed terribly, roaring and spreading its seeds all over the place .
The Mandragora was weak enough to be killed instantly by low-grade awakeners, or ordinary people . However, it was a lot more difficult to remove the seeds it spread in its death throes .
Therefore, even a few Mandragora had to be removed with a very complicated and meticulous procedure .
These factors had led Chaeyeon to immediately close the area the
Mandragora had infested and ask the Society for an antidote exclusively for Mandragora . Finally the antidote had been supplied, and the Society was about to properly subdue the plants .
But what was this?
In the field the Mandragora had spread, they had suddenly all disappeared without a trace . Had someone removed them all?
It didn’t make sense .
It was best to follow the process detailed in the manual of the Awakening Peoples’ a.s.sociation if you wanted to eliminate Mandragora . The antidote needed to be prepared, and a high cla.s.s awakener should be dispatched to suppress the roar of each plant .
All the same, no one was seen entering the field . There were no clues at all . ‘It ’s weird . The Mandragora have no feet– they can hardly have run away! It’s as if they melted away overnight and disappeared . ’
‘Haha, where were the root vegetables going to run to, anyway?’
The chairman was lost in thought . After agonizing over it for a long time, he eventually came to a decision .
“It’s hot . Let’s go in while we think . I’ll call Gabi, and have a talk with her . ”
Chae-yeon, the Ice Witch, opened her eyes wide in shock .
“Gabi!”
Gabi was a first-cla.s.s awakener, with the nickname ‘Shadow Cat’ . She had the powerful ability to deftly move at extreme speeds, and conceal herself as skillfully as a cat .
“Has Shadow Cat returned?”
“Yes . She came back last night, but she’s still on standby for a mission, so I’ll instruct you to investigate that first . ”
“Okay, thank you . ”
Chae-yeon bowed politely in deference .
* * *
Early that morning .
Tangerine opened his eyes, blinking sleepily .
Tangerine was nestled in a cozy blanket, and stretched out in it, yawning cutely . Tears trickled out from the corner of one of his eyes, and he turned his head to the side .
My brother and father were still asleep .
His brother was busy these days . He was too busy for Tangerine to play around with nowadays .
And the man he considered his dad…

“Dad, dad . ”
He was frowning in his sleep .
He seemed to be having another nightmare . Tangerine c.o.c.ked his head, stretching again . He had woken up with a stiff neck . Anyway, it wasn’t important .
rumbling~
I’m hungry .
Over the past couple of days Tangerine had gained a lot of weight . Not long ago he shed his skin for the first time, and since then the amount of food he ate daily had increased . He never used to be this hungry before .
It was too early for his father or brother to get up . Tangerine padded out of the room and circled the restaurant floor once, in a short walk . Then he stretched out his four legs .
I’m hungry, but is there anything to eat?
Oh yeah, that’s right .
Tangerine had often seen his father take out food from a square box . Tangerine walked toward the refrigerator, before pus.h.i.+ng his back leg straight and pulling himself up to bite the refrigerator handle .
Then he jumped straight backwards .
The refrigerator opened with a satisfying click . Tangerine jumped up and down, excited . Now all he had to do was reach the shelves there . Tangerine, who had been carefully pondering the issue, suddenly opened his eyes .
“Yay!”
All he needed was a chair!
Tangerine dragged over the chair that his Dad always sat on, and stood on it to skim through the interior of the refrigerator .
“Papa?”
But he saw a strange thing . Tangerine tilted its head .
People?
Why were there people in the fridge? Is that a bald man?
Huh?
However, on closer inspection it wasn’t a real person at all . Tangerine, who had been briefly surprised, realised the arms and legs he had seen were formed from roots . Relieved, he nodded once .
Yeah . It looks like a giant radish .
Suddenly the vegetable moved . The vegetable wiggled its limbs and looked at Tangerine, opening its mouth as if it was trying to speak . He thought it was going to say something, but strangely there was no sound .
Tangerine closely examined the vegetable with wide eyes .
It was very fascinating .
Tangerine’s eyes twinkled with curiosity as he sniffed at the weird plant .

It looked delicious .
The little dragon, who had a humongous appet.i.te, took a bite . The moment he took a bite he frowned .
bam!~
It’s not good!
.
.
.
.
.
.
“…”
Cheol-ho pinched the bridge of his nose . Tangerine seemed to have eaten until he burst, the refrigerator door was hanging wide open, and a lot of the ingredients were gone .
“This guy…”
Cheol-ho sighed . When Tangerine was hungry he would eat anything he saw . Tangerine really deserved some scolding . Khan was equally surprised, still blearily rubbing his eyes .
“So, he really ate it all?”
Cheol-ho nodded .
“Surprisingly, I think he is okay . ”
Tangerine had eaten more than half of the ingredients that Cheol-ho had gathered grocery shopping the day before, and was now continuously sleeping . He seemed to be in a wonderfully deep sleep .
Cheol-ho tilted his head in despair, before lifting Tangerine to bring him back to his room and lay him down on his blanket .
Tangerine felt good buried in the fuzzy, cozy blanket, and stretched out his four legs in satisfaction . A slight smile spread across his face .
“Sleep . ”
Cheol-ho smiled and rubbed his hand against the little dragon’s cheek .
Anyway .
Most of today’s ingredients had been ruined, so he had to go grocery shopping again .
By the way .
“Khan . ”
“Did you call?” shouted Khan, who was brus.h.i.+ng his teeth .
“Where have you been lately? I haven’t even seen you for a few days . ”
Khan gargled and spat out water before replying .
“I’m looking into the conditions that created a gap in the dimensions . I’m searching for places the dungeon occurred . ”
“Oh . Did you figure anything out?”
“No . ”
He was brave .
Khan raised his voice to ask a question, his speech slightly m.u.f.fled while he wiped his face with a towel .
“Cheol-ho, you have reached the level of six-cla.s.s masters . Can you control the gap in the dimension?”
“It’s impossible . No . ”
“Right? That’s the same with us dragons . So, who creates the dimension gap?”
“I dont know . ”
“Then how did you come back to this world?”
“Well…”
It was hard to explain, and it had been decades since the devil was slain .
“Well, somehow it happened . Let’s talk about this later over a drink . It’s quite a long story . ”
“I get it . ”
Khan nodded lightly .
Dragging on clothes while he talked, Cheol-ho took a step out the restaurant door .
“Then I’ll go grocery shopping . ”
It was hot outside .
The sun was really burning him to death . He felt like he would keel over and shrivel up at any moment . The whole place was scorching .
‘Because it’s summer . ’
Cheol-ho grinned at the heat of the environment . Come to think of it, he hadn’t had many customers in the past few days . Only Kim Man-ho stopped by every day to eat his customary bowl of ramen . It was hot, so everyone seemed to stay at home more .
Yeah .
It was summer .
Come to think of it, there were times in summer when you feel uncomfortable eating hot food . Sometimes a person’s taste buds or general sense of taste disappeared , and hot weather was one of the things that could do such a thing .
As Cheol-ho moved along, he pondered .
When it came to summer, that was just what happened .
