Chapter 42 – Mister, Someone Is Coming to Kill Us
unedited
"Mister, someone is chasing us. It looks like they want to kill us!"
A ruthless light could be seen in the bearded chauffeur's eyes. Now that societal order had eroded, the map of power had s.h.i.+fted, causing the power struggle between every behemoth of the country to intensify. The chauffeur didn't expect for someone to aim at his employer's life so soon.
At the beginning of the GD outbreak, no one, not even the upper strata of the government nor the hidden power of the underworld took the situation seriously. With the rapid spread of the infection and exponential speed of the mutation, how could they no longer fear the GD virus?
The detailed characteristics of the GD virus still eluded scientists. However, there was one fact they discovered – everyone alive or not had the virus swimming in their bloodstream. Now, the main question remains; why would it cause mutation in certain people, transforming them into man-eating monsters, while sparing others? What would happen if a trigger situation occurs and everyone mutated again? Wouldn't the whole world turn into a never-ending nightmare?
Anyway, everything was hypothetical and at present, few would be bothered with theory has the current situation had caught most people by surprise. It only took two months from the initial outbreak to the current crisis for the virus to overtake humanity. Short in time, the preventive measures were inadequate, completely obsolete to stop the propagation of the infection.
In the face of the rise of patients, many were used as experiments. Unfortunately, no one was able to determine the cause of the onset of symptoms. Then, the doctors and scientists turned their investigation on a healthy virus carrier. Through their experiments on the dormant virus, it activated the virus somehow causing the healthy carrier to turned into a flesh-eating zombie.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Despite the chauffeur attempted to shake off their pursuers, the car behind closed their distance and greeted them with a volley of bullets.
The man sitting in the backseat didn't flinch. He glanced at the rearview mirror and saw six more cars joining the chase as they pa.s.sed an intersection. A man leaned out of the car window and aimed at him.
"Stay on this road. There are a lot of obstructions and, with their number, we will have the field advantage, not to mention it will be dark soon." As he instructed in a low voice, his gentle eyes seemed to sparkle as his mouth hooked into a smile. "We're going to the nearest city!"
His calm voice held a powerful commanding force.
"Yes, Mister!" The bearded chauffeur didn't question his order and communicated without delay with their people in the two other vehicles.
Like in Fast & Furious, the two groups of vehicles began a frenzied chase on the highway with an exchange of gunfire from time to time.
Their opponents weren't people to be underestimated. They were probably professional hitmen with topnotch skills. Soon, they took out the two other cars in front with their perfect accuracy, leaving the bodyguards inside waste or dead.
Although the angel-like man lost two vehicles, his subordinates were also able to sc.r.a.p two of their opponents' cars.
After 30 minutes of drive, Bai Ling parked the car and got off with Bai Xiaoxi, sword in hand. Her movements were nimble and light as she hid quickly behind a corner. Her keen eyes surveyed the streets, observing the staggering zombies. Then, she stared at the shops on the main street.
She must find her destination first.
On the street, there was a car destroyed by an electric pole. Gore strewed everywhere on the ground and a b.l.o.o.d.y scent had permeated the air. There was no sight of any living humans. They probably hid somewhere, so only undead could be seen roaming aimlessly.
This street was once a bustling commercial avenue with many clothing shops, but skirts and fas.h.i.+onable wears weren't the aims of Bai Ling. In the end, she couldn't find what she was looking for on that street. They turned a corner to explore some more but discovered a big luxurious department store across the street, and the entrance was wide opened.
That kind of department store often had late opening hours, so they might not have time to close it before the end of the world.
Bai Ling turned to Bai Xiaoxi and signaled at him with her eyes. Then, she pointed at the four floors building.

Bai Xiaoxi was stunned. In that kind of department store, each floor can only be accessed via elevators or stairs. Furthermore, the entrance was open. It was impossible to determine how many zombies went in. Why does she want to go in there?
His silent question remained unanswered as Bai Ling had dashed out of her hidden spot.
"Growl!"
Her sudden appearance had attracted the attention of the zombies in her vicinity. In an instant, the zombie who had roared pounced at her, but she left it in the dust, closely followed by Bai Xiaoxi.
After three days of training, Bai Ling had drilled into his head her modus operandi. Therefore, it didn't matter if Bai Ling explained her actions or not, he would still follow her with blind trust, not to mention he was grateful to her.
Except for that zombie pouncing on her, the other zombies didn't show any meaning of approaching them, so it only took her one slash to take care of it.
She proceeded to the store and Bai Xiaoxi followed suite at the same speed. Clang! They closed behind them the gla.s.s doors.
Fortunately, the store only had one entrance instead of having an entrance at the four cardinal points.
Graaah!
An one-arm zombie popped out of a blind spot and greeted Bai Xiaoxi with a b.l.o.o.d.y and half-rotten face and wide opened mouth. At such a close distance, it was impossible for him to dodge.
However, he was no longer like his former ignorant self. He didn't close his eyes and awaited death. On the contrary, he used his sword to block the attack.
Slas.h.!.+ Instead of blocking the attack, the sword cut through the head like b.u.t.ter. Splurt! And, he got generously showered with brain matters and fouled blood.
The longer that thing was dead, the worst the blood smell. After a certain degree of mutation, which doesn't affect the putrefaction of the flesh, undead's blood would take a purplish color. At that moment, most zombies looked less and less human, only keeping the shape.
How strange. Bai Xiaoxi had the nagging feeling the zombies' movements were less stiff compared to a few days ago.
There should be many zombies inside the store, so Bai Xiaoxi couldn't afford to daydream. In addition, Bai Lin had already reached the stairs. Another weird thing happened. The zombies chasing them stopped at the stairs, not taking a step further. They paced around with vile expressions, showing how much they thirst and hunger for human flesh, even pouncing toward the stairs but failing miserably. They fell on their stomach and flailed their limbs around in a struggle. It was quite a hilarious scene.
An hour later, the duo had successfully reached the leather clothes section. At the same time, they were able to clean up all the zombies on the fourth floor. Armed with only swords, their journey wasn't one without peril. Throughout their advance, there was no shadow of a living human, perhaps everyone had perished and turned into monsters, or maybe they hid in the safer places.
Bai Xiaoxi stared at the leather clothing and shoes, then he looked at his ripped and grossed clothes. In the first days of the apocalypse, the zombies' nails were at normal size, but from the third day on, for some unknown reason, their nails turned dark purple, grew longer and became sharper. He felt the risk of getting infected and turning into a zombie might be higher if scratch by those nails unlike before.
Hence, he was more vigilant, a sentiment reinforced by Bai Ling's warnings. The changes in him were for the good. He couldn't fathom how others might fare in the same situation as him without G.o.dly swords.
He looked at himself in the mirror. His clothes were in tattered; his sneakers were so dirty that the original color could no longer be seen. It has been less than a week, but his face no longer showed the naivete of youth. Although caked with dirt and blood, there was a sharpness that couldn't be hidden.
