Before my eyes, a blue-haired girl was spreading her arms with a fl.u.s.tered look on her face. She looked as if she were trying to tell me that she wanted a hug from me, but unfortunately, that's not what she meant.
Eh? Or did she?
If she was trying to tell me to hug her, then wouldn't it look exactly like this?
Well, with that said, while this gesture of hers may seem to be directed at me since she was just in front of me, it wasn't actually so.
"Ah…"
"Kya, kya…"
"Look~! Mom is here~! Come here, come on!"
It was directed at the two warm objects I was holding in my arms. I wonder why they're so warm and soft.
"W-what do I do, they're not coming!!!" the girl called out. She looked worried, and her voice sounded as if she were on the verge of bursting into tears. Actually, she was already shedding some tears.
A lovely long hair of blue, reaching down to her waist. A small figure—she was probably younger than me. Such a girl was now showing glimpses of her white skin while wrapped in a jacket that I lent her. For example, her small belly b.u.t.ton, and, well, her similarly small… bosom.
"S-sorry, Kunpei-san! W-well, it's the first time that I have had children, so I… I don't know!"
"Ah, yeah. It's okay."
Let's calm down first. I've calmed down, though? Nah, probably. Yep. I'm calm, I'm calm. Really!
As the girl repeatedly glanced at me imploringly, she timidly drew near. I've once again measured her figure reflected in my eyes.
I've said it many times, but her hair was blue. One part of it was held in place at the back by a barrette, thus revealing her right ear and the nape of her neck. Her trailing thin, straight hair was sparkling in the sunlight, looking very lovely and giving her image an air of mystery.
Big scarlet pupils and long eyelashes.
Properly tall nose plus small lips.
Well-proportioned jaw line.
White and slender neck with a smooth nape.
A waist neither too thin nor too big, and that very modest bosom.
Good, it's a girl. No matter how you look at her, she's a normal girl, okay? Normal, okay?!
"Ah…"
"Um…!"
When I was slightly escaping from reality, the two warm objects in my arms started to move restlessly.
"Ah, yes, yes! Mom is here~ Come here, come on!"
A broad smile appeared on the joyful face of the blue-haired girl, and she spread her arms widely once more. Tears burst from the corners of her eyes.
"Da~!"
"Ah~"
"Look here, give mom a hug~! Aaaah, so cute. So very, very cute~ Nice to meet you! I'm your mom~!"
The two soft and warm objects disappeared from my embrace, and cheerfully went into her arms.
How to say it… it made me feel kind of lonely.
"Ah~"
"Um~"
"I'm so glad~"
Tears started to flow copiously from the girl's eyes.
"Sob, hic… s-since the time they disappeared from the nest, I was really anxious and didn't know what to do, but it's such a relief now that they've been f-found. It's mom's fault… hic, forgive mom, okay?"
"Err, well, you know…"
It was at that moment that I finally started asking questions.
I've been waiting until she calms down properly, but there's a load of things I want to ask.
"Eh, ah! K-Kunpei-san, thank you very much as well! Sob, ah, well, about hatching, you've helped me, it seems…"
"Oh, it's nothing, I've done nothing special."
All I've done was merely giving the escaping thief a lariat. If it was manga, it'd be a normal everyday occurrence, no?
[TL/N: Lariat = hitting a guy's neck from the front with your outstretched arm (the part between the shoulder and elbow), sometimes by running into him. Not sure how it's called in English, but that's how they call it in j.a.pan (there's even an article on JP wiki, though only in that language).]"Well, for now, can you maybe explain something to me?"
Somehow, I get the feeling that I've done something terrible.
"Y-you're right. Err, what would you like to know first?"
There's honestly a whole bunch of things I want to ask, but let's find out more about this girl right in front of me first.
"Hm, Aoinowne… Aoinowne-san, right?"
"Yes, Dragoline Aoinowne. My friends call me Soukyuu." Aoinowne-san quickly bowed her head as she introduced herself. [TL/N: Soukyuu means Blue Sky]
"Ah, thank you for being polite. My name is Kazamachi Kunpei." I likewise bowed my head.
"So…"
"Yes."
With tears still gathering in the corners of her eyes, Aoinowne-san fixed her gaze on me.
With her staring at me so intently, it was hard for me to speak, oi!
My shy heart seemed to tremble. Oh no. This girl… she's an amazing beauty, so I couldn't stop blus.h.i.+ng.
"Are those children yours?"
I looked at the warm objects in Aoinowne-san's arms I've been holding just a while ago.
Looking at me with blank and apparently curious gaze, their eyes were narrowing and heads rocking as they started dozing off.
"Yes. They came from the eggs I've laid last month and which you've made hatch, Kunpei-san."
Yep. She's just said it, hasn't she?
'Eggs' and 'lay'.
"Ah, as I thought…?"
That's a relief. I've already started thinking that something is wrong with my head.
To Shouhei who's waiting for my return back home—relax. Your older brother is still alright. I'm still your older brother. By no means have I gone insane.
"Ah, I see. You're a human after all, Kunpei-san. It seems that humans don't hatch from eggs?"
Oh, I see.
So it was like that after all…
"Yes. I'm a human, but, Aoinowne-san is, well, how to put it…"
This is the thing I wanted to ask about the most.
Those bigs things on her back, those black l.u.s.trous objects on both sides of her head, that thing growing near her bottom… all this while, I've been really scared that I was seeing things and they were all part of some hallucination.
Coupled with her figure, the impact of it all was so strong that I was on the contrary doubting my eyes all this time.
I forcefully swallowed my saliva, trying to moisten my dry throat. It didn't help at all.
Taking a deep breath, I first closed, then opened my eyes. Two pairs of eyes looked at me, one cute and round and another sleepy, and our gazes met.
For now, I smiled just in case. Then, I raised my eyes and looked at Aoinowne-san.
I've made up my mind.
"…a dragon… right?"
"Yes! I'm a sky dragon!" she replied with a big smile, causing her still wet tears to run down her cheeks.
h.e.l.lo everyone, Kurisu here. I'm the translator of this novel. The release rate is undecided as of yet, but 2/month at the very least (should be more, but I'm new to translating - I'm an editor first and foremost - so can't say for sure just yet). Will update you when I know!
