Chapter 3: Dragon Lady (2)

"Good afternoon~"

"Ah, h.e.l.lo!"

A cat-eared aunty bowed her head at me. Fl.u.s.tered, I returned the greeting. In the town I've been living before, I was sort of a minor celebrity, so it's been quite a while since I've been greeted like that.

"…There's quite a lot of beastmen, huh."

I saw some members of the cat race and the bird race here and there. I wonder if this town is one of those areas where a lot of the [Other Side] remained.

Apparently, as the part of j.a.pan west of Kanto has quite a peculiar topography, there's a lot of people from [There] here. Well, in the first place, there were quite a few of them living in my previous town too.

I've been walking for 10 minutes now. Stopping on the road ascending a gentle hill, I looked in the direction of my new home. I could see most of the surrounding area from here.

A giant boulder shaped like an inverted triangle pierced the ground there. Since my house was at the bottom of that giant boulder, it was quite easy to tell its location.

Half a year ago, when my old man said that he wanted to buy a new house, I was surprised. After all, Shouhei had yet to be promoted to the sixth grade, and I too had only just enrolled in high school. Obviously, we both opposed it.

However, old man was surprisingly adamant about it.

Our Kazamachi Family was ruled by democracy. The majority rule in our house was absolute, and if some idea was rejected, then the one who came up with it could only obediently give up.

The one who established this rule was my old man.

However, it was that old man who ignored this rule. It was the first time it ever happened.

The two of us brothers judged that there had to be some reason for it, so we pressed him for an answer. In the end, our old man who had long reached his middle age confessed with a completely red face.

As it turned out, our parents visited this town on their honeymoon.

It was a rural town with a mid-sized hot springs resort and hidden tourist spots. It seemed like mother was very delighted with it. At that time, full of excitement, she told our old man, "One day, I'd like to live in this town."

Our old man who was crazy about his wife engraved those words in his memory.

Since that day, he was spending some time every day to check if there was some cheap house on sale on the internet and such.

And then, around last year's summer, old man was overcome with joy.

His income and savings, even when bearing in mind our school tuition and living expenses, were barely enough to bid for c.u.m rights to a property including a plot of land and a second-hand house which recently appeared on auction.

[TL/N: Don't ask me what c.u.m rights are, all I can tell you is that it's nothing perverted and that looking at this ugly phrase the dictionary spat out, it's probably some deed of joint owners.h.i.+p between two people or a person and a bank. The house was eventually bought on mortgage, after all.]

After that, everything proceeded swiftly.

Our old man, who had a job related to architecture, used all his connections and took part in the auction, then informed us about it. He used the fact that he already put so much effort into it and that he couldn't retreat now as a means to forcefully persuade us.

To be frank, we brothers loved our late mother a lot. Since it concerned mother, we could hardly object.

We were sorry to part with everyone in our previous school, but we knew we ought to prioritize respecting our mother's wish.

Ah, it's not that I was particularly reluctant to leave my previous school. I didn't have any friends there, anyway. Oh, wait—there was actually a whole bunch of annoying guys who were my self-proclaimed friends.
Not that they actually ever tried talking to me.

Well, that's how it was. Be it Shouhei or me, after knowing the actual situation, we didn't even consider rejecting the idea of moving to the town mother hoped to live in.

"Well, the air here is clean and the scenery's quite amazing too," I muttered as I engaged in recollection.

Verdant rural landscape and modern residential area.

Elegant mountain range on the horizon no matter where you look.

A big river flowing nearby.

It was simply the perfect environment to lead a peaceful life. The dense forest growing behind our house and the inverted-triangle-shaped giant boulder stabbed into the ground there only helped accentuate it.

What's amazing is that according to the plans, the big boulder is merely 100 meters away from the house. It's perfectly to the north of our house, so it never obstructs the sunlight.

Alright, the break's over. Let's quickly take care of the shopping and return.

The three of us Kazamachis actually don't have much stuff, so the luggage we brought with us when moving in was rather small.

With that said, as Shouhei prioritized the kitchen and the dining room which fell under his responsibility, I'm sure he has yet to clean his own room.

I'll quickly return and finish it for him.

I resumed my walk along the hill road.

However, I've failed to see a giant shadow that leapt off the giant boulder.

So, about the name change… first of all, Dragoline is actually her surname. I was trolled by MC using it to address her (in j.a.pan, normally you first address people by their surname, and only address them by their first name when you get closer…), but in later chapters, others address her with her surname Dragoline, which cleared up everything. This was also raised by one of the readers.

Second of all, the same reader raised the issue of her (now) first name, Aoinoun. From the first time I saw it, I found it off, coz it didn't ring any bells… but as it turns out, it's actually a pun on words 'blue cloud'. Hence the change (unlike what I'd thought, it was only meaning that was fancy, not the spelling).

Kudos to Kemm for noticing these issues!
