The st.i.tches on Gu Jiao Wu’s chest were teared. Qiao Tan Yuan was more worried about the blood on his chest than her own life.

‘Cheng Yi, you’re the father of Zheng Jia Ju’s son,’ Gu Jiao Wu said. ‘If you don’t believe me, get a DNA test and you’ll know the truth.’

Cheng Yi was surprised Gu Jiao Wu would suggest he take a DNA test.

‘Ask your heart, why you want to avenge Zheng Jia Ju,’ Gu Jiao Wu said. ‘Why you feel a connection to Zheng Jia Ju. You don’t remember Zheng Jia Ju, but your heart remembers Zheng Jia Ju.’

Cheng Yi took a step back, and collapsed.

Gu Jiao Wu got out of bed to help Cheng Yi, but he lost too much blood and collapsed on the bed.

Qiao Tan Yuan ran outside and called for help.

The doctors examined Gu Jiao Wu and Cheng Yi then they bandaged Gu Jiao Wu and Cheng Yi’s wounds.

In the evening, Gu Jiao Wu woke up and saw Qiao Tan Yuan sitting on the chair next to his bed.

‘Don’t say anything,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said. ‘You reopened your wound, and need to rest.’

‘I’m OK,’ Gu Jiao Wu said and held Qiao Tan Yuan’s hand to rea.s.sure her.

‘Next time if you do something reckless again, I’ll forget about you,’ Qiao Tan Yuan threatened.

‘Where’s Cheng Yi?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.

‘You should worry about yourself first,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said.

‘He’s my friend,’ Gu Jiao Wu said.

‘I called the police to arrest him,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said.

‘What?’ Gu Jiao Wu said. ‘Why did you call the police? Nothing happened to me. He’s a good person.’

‘You should rest,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said. ‘I didn’t call the police. Are you satisfied now?’

Qiao Tan Yuan picked up the flask on the table.

‘Are you hungry?’ Qiao Tan Yuan asked. ‘I can warm up the soup I asked Mrs Chu to make for you or I can go buy you dinner.’

‘The soup is enough,’ Gu Jiao Wu said.

Qiao Tan Yuan reheated the soup, and fed Gu Jiao Wu. Afterward she went home to be with Xiao Bao.

Xiao Lam saw Qiao Tan Yuan leave in her car, and he walked to Gu Jiao Wu’s room.

‘Big brother, Cheng Yi left the hospital,’ Xiao Lam reported.

‘Let him go,’ Gu Jiao Wu said. ‘I believe he knows Fei Yan Niao’s lying to him.’

‘Yes big brother,’ Xiao Lam said and left to let Gu Jiao Wu sleep.

The following morning, Qiao Tan Yuan brought breakfast for Gu Jiao Wu and Xiao Lam. She didn’t expect Gu Jiao Wen, Du Lei Xin, Hu Zui Ren and Tong Shang Wen would arrive before her.

‘Big brother, I told the elders you’re on a business trip overseas,’ Gu Jiao Wen said. ‘If you don’t rest and recover soon, I can’t stop your mum running around hospitals looking for you.’

Gu Jiao Wen hated hiding secrets from his family, he didn’t even tell Tan Pan Ting that Gu Jiao Wu was shot.

‘Um, my injury is nothing,’ Gu Jiao Wu said. ‘I’ll recover in another couple of days.’

The men looked at Gu Jiao Wu like he had a head injury, because a bullet to the lung wasn’t nothing.

After the men left, Qiao Tan Yuan thought about Shen Cheng. She didn’t want to cause a rift between Gu Jiao Wu and Shen Cheng’s friends.h.i.+p.

Gu Jiao Wu fiddled with Qiao Tan Yuan’s fingers.

‘What are you thinking about?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.

‘I’m thinking about Shen Cheng,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said. ‘Today he didn’t come with the others to visit you. I’m worried he’s upset with me.’

‘You’re thinking about Shen Cheng?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked and frowned.

‘I… are you jealous?’ Qiao Tan Yuan asked.

Gu Jiao Wu scoffed.

‘Why would I be jealous?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked. ‘Shen Cheng isn’t compatible with you.’

‘Gu Jiao Wu, what do you mean?’ Qiao Tan Yuan asked.

Qiao Tan Yuan thought Gu Jiao Wu meant a good man like Shen Cheng wasn’t compatible with a bad woman like her.

‘I meant the only man who is compatible with you is me,’ Gu Jiao Wu said. He held Qiao Tan Yuan’s hand tightly, and forgot about his chest pain. ‘You belong with me.’

‘I don’t know,’ Qiao Tan Yuan said. ‘If you mistreat me, I’ll go find another man. I’m certain there are many men who are compatible with me.’

‘If any other man dares to touch you, I’ll turn him into an invalid,’ Gu Jiao Wu threatened.

‘Gu Jiao Wu, why are you such a Neanderthal?’ Qiao Tan Yuan asked.

‘Neanderthal?’ Gu Jiao Wu asked.

Gu Jiao Wu pulled Qiao Tan Yuan onto the bed and kissed her lips. She didn’t pressure on his chest, and held his shoulders. She never kissed a Neanderthal before, and she wondered if their tongue would be as sweet as Gu Jiao Wu’s tongue.
