Chapter 1022 Not to Be Trusted Means Suspicious
In front of the gate of the Kang family residence.
Dongzi stopped the car and looked back at the back seat. “Brother Cheng, Ms. Xu, we are home.”
Kang Ruicheng didn’t move and just said, “A Ning, you go in with Mumu first. I have something to do and will be back in the evening.”
“Okay.” Xu Youning didn’t ask Kang Ruicheng for any reason. She took Mumu’s hand and said, “Let’s go back.”
Mumu nodded obediently, pushed the door open, and slipped down agilely like a little monkey. He bounced into the house, holding on to Xu Youning’s hand.
Outside the gate, Kang Ruicheng didn’t roll up the window until he lost sight of Mumu and Xu Youning. He ordered Dongzi, “Go.”
“Yes, sir.”
Dongzi answered and turned the car around. The car soon left the old city area.
After driving for a while, Dongzi felt that the atmosphere in the car seemed to be a little tense, but since Kang Ruicheng did not speak, he did not dare to open his mouth.
The car quickly drove on the road and converged into the endless traffic. At that time, Kang Ruicheng suddenly rolled down the window.
Dongzi was stunned and then called out, “Brother Cheng!”
Kang Ruicheng was in the car. It was very dangerous for him to open a window like this. If a sniper targeted him from a distance, Kang Ruicheng might lose his life.
In the past, Kang Ruicheng would have never done so foolhardy.
But now, Kang Ruicheng was obviously doing it on purpose.
Dongzi looked at Kang Ruicheng in the rearview mirror, his pupils dilating. He was so surprised that he couldn’t speak.
Kang Ruicheng seemed to be unaware of the danger. He looked out with a serious look, the cold wind blowing onto his face.
After a long while, Kang Ruicheng said slowly, “It’s fine. It’s only for a short while.”
Dongzi gritted his teeth and informed his fellows in the front and back cars, “Be on your guard. Be careful of snipers around!”
Hearing Dongzi’s anxious but helpless voice, Kang Ruicheng didn’t respond and just lit a cigarette.
“If Xu Youning was sitting next to him, would she worry about him like Dongzi?”
If Kang Ruicheng really wanted to know the answer, he could just turn back now and pick up Xu Youning.
However, unexpectedly, Kang Ruicheng found that he didn’t have the courage to try such an experiment.
He knew better than anyone else that after she came back from Mu Sijue’s side, Xu Youning’s feelings for him had changed and she could no longer withstand any tests.
What a… joke.
While he was lost in thought, the cigarette between Kang Ruicheng’s fingers had already burned out.
Kang Ruicheng dropped the cigarette b.u.t.t, wound up the window, and suddenly asked, “Dongzi, did you notice anything unusual about A Ning today?”
Dongzi was taken aback by his words. He looked at Kang Ruicheng in shock and finally said, “I didn’t find anything wrong with Ms. Xu. Brother Cheng, are you suspecting Ms. Xu? Is there anything fishy about Ms. Xu?”
“There is nothing obviously wrong with her, but I can’t trust her totally.” Kang Ruicheng slowly sank back in his seat. “About filtering the surveillance footage. Did you find anything on that?”
“This filtering process is very slow, and I haven’t found anything yet.” Dongzi hesitated for a moment and said, “Brother Cheng, could you have misunderstood Ms. Xu?”
“I won’t really believe in A Ning until you’re done sorting out the surveillance footage and can confirm that there’s nothing unusual. She knows that the study is a forbidden area. Even if Mumu wanted to find something, she could’ve called me first.” Kang Ruicheng stopped, thought for a moment, and his expression didn’t soften. “Dongzi, you need to continue to filter the surveillance footage. You must be careful. I don’t want you to miss anything.”
“I see.” Dongzi nodded. “After the screening, I’ll tell you whether there’s anything fishy or not.”
Kang Ruicheng lit another cigarette and watched the scarlet glimmer making its way to the b.u.t.t, his face cold and dark.
He didn’t want Xu Youning to hide anything, but if Xu Youning really had an ulterior motive in returning to him, he would not be lenient with her.
That was the last chance he gave Xu Youning.
If Xu Youning changed her mind and was willing to stay with him forever, he could leave the past behind
But if Xu Youning still liked Mu Sijue, unfortunately, the time when they met at the street of bars would have been their last meeting.
This time, Xu Youning came back to him with only two results—
Either, she would become his most treasured one.
Or, she could be destroyed by him.
In the Kang family residence.
Getting out of the car, Mumu pulled Xu Youning back into the room and locked the door from inside.
The kid had a serious expression that was not normal for children of his age.
Xu Youning was baffled by Mumu. She looked at the little fellow in confusion and asked, “Mumu, what’s wrong?”
Mumu frowned and looked even sadder than Xu Youning. “Auntie Youning, why didn’t Uncle Mu pick you up?”
“Hmm?” Xu Youning was even more surprised. “Mumu, why did you think Uncle Mu would come?” She had apparently never mentioned anything like that to Mumu!
Mumu tilted his head and said innocently, “If Uncle Mu did not come, why was Daddy so nervous?”
Xu Youning couldn’t refute Mumu’s theory and didn’t know what to say either.
From the moment she suspected that Ah Jin was working undercover, she had been wondering if Mu Sijue would come today.
She had returned from the hospital, but she didn’t find any trace of Mu Sijue.
Even so, she still couldn’t be sure whether Mu Sijue had gone to the hospital today, or if he had even been near the hospital.
Seeing that Xu Youning didn’t speak for a long time, Mumu pulled the hem of Xu Youning’s clothes and asked, “Auntie Youning, was Uncle Mu not aware that you were going to see a doctor today?”
Mumu’s words suddenly dawned on Xu Youning, and she felt lost.
Yes, Mu Sijue might not know anything.
Maybe she had been too optimistic all this time. Mu Sijue didn’t know the so-called truth at all. No matter what would happen next, she still had to face it alone.
With thoughts like that, all these pessimistic feelings engulfed Xu Youning like clinging vines. She felt as if she had been thrown somewhere thousands of meters high. The air around her became increasingly thinner, and it became more and more difficult for her to breathe.
Xu Youning covered her heart, but she still couldn’t stop the spreading pain and pessimism.
Mumu saw Xu Youning’s pain on her face. He walked over to hug Xu Youning and whispered in her ear, “Auntie Youning, don’t give up so soon. Uncle Mu didn’t come this time, but he’ll definitely come next time.”
“Next time?”
Xu Youning was lost in a daze, “If Mu Sijue doesn’t know anything, maybe he won’t come at all next time.”
However, Mumu was right. She shouldn’t have given up so soon.
Kang Ruicheng had brought too many people, and the security was so tight. Even if he was near the hospital, Mu Sijue couldn’t find a chance to make a move.
Maybe Mu Sijue was there, but she didn’t notice.
Seeing Xu Youning’s eyes gradually regain their vitality, Mumu breathed a sigh of relief like an adult and reminded her, “Auntie Youning, didn’t the doctor prescribe medicine for you? Do you want to take it now?”
“Medicine?”
No, Xu Youning swore that she would never touch the medicine prescribed by the doctor!
Mumu felt that Xu Youning’s expression was strange and couldn’t help tilting his head. “Aunt Youning, why won’t you take it? Is there anything wrong with the medicine from the doctor?”
Of course, those drugs might hurt her baby!
Xu Youning was about to nod when she thought of another thing—
She wanted to know whether the doctor was sent by Mu Sijue, and maybe she could tell by the prescribed medicine.
If the doctor was sent to the hospital by Mu Sijue, then he must know about her illness and that her child was still alive. Then he would definitely not prescribe medicine that would affect the fetus unless he didn’t want to live anymore.
That was to say, if the doctor did not take into account the child in her belly with the medicine he prescribed, then she might as well give up all hope and not rely on the doctor.
If the medicine prescribed by the doctor had no effect on her child, that could be considered as the best news of her life.
Mumu looked at Xu Youning’s increasingly strange expression and inquired in a confused tone, “Auntie Youning?”
Xu Youning squatted down and kissed Mumu hard. “Wait for me!”
Mumu touched the place where Xu Youning had kissed and before he could react, Xu Youning had rushed into the bathroom with the medicine.
“Bang!”
Slamming the door shut, Xu Youning quickly brought out the bottles in the bag, opened one casually, and took out two pills.
On the surface, they looked no different from ordinary drugs. After swallowing it, she found it bitter and astringent, but it could indeed relieve the illness.
Xu Youning was unwilling to give up, and she couldn’t believe it so easily, so she pinched and broke a pill into two—
Sure enough, it was a bottle of fake medicine!
On the surface, the medicine seemed normal, but it was wrapped around a completely different kind of substance.
If Xu Youning was right, it should be vitamins that had no side effects.
In an instant, Xu Youning felt like a person who had found fire while trapped on a snow covered mountain. She opened a few more pills, each of which was filled with vitamins.
The doctor should know that her child was still alive, so he didn’t dare to prescribe medicine for her at will. He gave her a few bottles of vitamins disguised as medicine and that should have been just to put on a show for Kang Ruicheng.
That was why before she left the office, the doctor had specifically reminded her that medicine had no side effects and would only help her illness.
“In fact, the vitamins would not be helpful for her illness, would it?”
However, confirming that Mu Sijue knew the truth was the best help for her.
She was no longer fighting this alone, and Mu Sijue was silently guarding her from some distance.
Xu Youning clenched her fists. She looked at herself in the mirror, raised her lips, and smiled a wholesome smile that came from the bottom of her heart all the way to her eyes.
Then, she burst into tears…
When Ah Jin first helped her to lure Kang Ruicheng away, she wasn’t confident about herself, so she thought it was a coincidence.
Until a few days ago, she was discovered to have entered his study by Kang Ruicheng, and Mumu came in to help her out.
Later, the little fellow told her that it was Ah Jin who had asked him to go in. Only then did she realize that her secret was gradually being revealed.
And the person who discovered her secret might be Mu Sijue…
