Chapter 227 Old Friends or Old Enemies?
Su Jianan didn’t know whether it was her illusion that time elapsed quickly.
Friday came so soon.
Luo Xiaoxi went through various difficulties and won the fifth week champion at Top Model. With an extremely high score over other players, she’d got a winning ticket.
In her words, she already disdained to celebrate.
As her score became higher and higher, Luo Xiaoxi’s became more and more popular.
The number of her fans on Weibo was increasing. After each weekly live broadcast, some news and topics about her would be seen the next day.
She became a rising star with great momentum. Candy and the brokerage company were very happy to see that, but Su Yicheng became more and more worried—being famous meant being busy. In the past, Luo Xiaoxi could not find him, but now, he had to make an appointment if he wanted to see her.
On Sat.u.r.day, new clues were found in the case of w.a.n.g Hong. Captain Yan, Su Jianan and Jiang Shaokai were all called back to the police station to work overtime.
Although this case was shelved before, Su Jianan kept it in mind and tried to find clues when she had time. No one expected Captain Yan would discover new clues at this time.
The people in the office were so busy, but in the end, it turned out to be in vain as there was still no definite evidence to arrest Dongzi.
When it was dark, the entire office was filled with sighs except for the incandescent lights.
“That kid is too crafty.” An old criminal policeman commented on Dongzi. “The Lawyer he hired is also sly. Getting something out of him is basically impossible.”
“But the longer the case is delayed, the less clue we can find.” Xiao Ying distressfully held chin with her hand. “What should we do?”
“Go on!” Captain Yan came back with several files and looked cold. “Handle more urgent cases, but don’t forget this one. As long as you haven’t retired, don’t give up the investigation!”
Captain Yan had always held this att.i.tude toward the unsettled cases. He agreed with Xiao Ying that time would bring away clues. But that was not absolutely right, and some clues would exactly take some time to emerge.
“It’s not too early now. Get off work and go back to have a rest, guys.” After saying that, Captain Yan went straight to his independent office with no sign of offing duty.
“You go back first.” Xiao Ying, who almost got up, sat down again. “I still have some things to deal with. I will accompany Captain Yan to work overtime!”
Su Jianan and other colleagues looked at each other and smiled. They knew Xiao Ying’s intention, so, they took their things and gradually left the office.
Because Su Jianan wanted to call Lu Boyan, she was the last to leave.
When she got out of the police station, a figure that she was not familiar with but could recognize came into her sight—
Tall and strong, in a black long trench coat, and almost invisible in the dark night, the man was no other than Kang Ruicheng.
“Happy coincidence.” Kang Ruicheng came over and blocked the wind with his hand to light a cigarette. He asked after smoking the cigarette between his fingers, “Did you work overtime today?”
Su Jianan’s voice was cold. “Yes, and all thanks to your brother.”
As her voice fell, Dongzi came from a distance with his eyes lingering on her.
If it had not been for this woman, Kang Ruicheng wouldn’t have come to the police station to pick him up.
What he didn’t understand was that, in addition to the beauty and the innocent temperament, how this woman attracted him.
Su Jianan wasn’t used to being looked at like a cargo, so, she looked away to the road—Lu Boyan hadn’t arrived yet.
Kang Ruicheng b.u.mped Dongzi hard with one of his elbows and his voice was fierce. “Don’t look at her like that. Don’t you see she is scared?”
Dongzi resisted the dull pain from his ribs and bowed to Su Jianan. “Miss Su, I’m sorry.”
“Chen Haodong, how did you do it?” Su Jianan flas.h.i.+ly stared at Dongzi. “All the signs showed that you killed w.a.n.g Hong, but you left no evidence there?”
“…”
If it were other people that questioned him, Dongzi would have already started beating him or her. However, this woman was so special to Kang Ruicheng, so, Dongzi could only look at Kang Ruicheng with querying eyes—he did not dare to touch the people Kang Ruicheng liked.
Kang Ruicheng signaled Dongzi not to make a sound, and he softly smiled and said, “Maybe you are wrong? Since there is no direct evidence, it’s possible that your target is wrong. Why don’t you change a target? Besides, w.a.n.g Hong is an orphan, no one cares how he died and what should be done after his death. Why do you waste so many resources and energies on this case?”
“Orphans are also human.” Alienation appeared in Su Jianan’s cold look. “w.a.n.g Hong has the same legal rights and obligations as you. We will definitely check the case out.” Her gaze slowly moved to Dongzi. “We absolutely don’t allow the murderer to go unpunished.”
This time, Kang Ruicheng’s laughter sounded disdainful. “Too young, too simple. Let me tell you, you have to work hard to make efforts for many things, but there will be no result, such as w.a.n.g Hong’s case, it’s destined to become a pending case.”
Su Jianan fearlessly looked at Kang Ruicheng’s fierce eyes. “I don’t believe it.”
“I don’t believe…”
Some people once had stubbornly said these three words to Kang Ruicheng.
Eyes fixed on Su Jianan, Kang Ruicheng said off the topic, “I suddenly felt some similarities between you.”
Su Jianan couldn’t understand his words, but Dongzi understood them.
Dongzi’s heart s.h.i.+vered and then he went up. “Brother, let’s go back.”
Kang Ruicheng didn’t move, slowly reaching out his hands to touch Su Jianan’s face—
Su Jianan’s face changed, and she had never resisted someone like this before. As she just wanted to avoid the hands, a long and powerful arm firmly caught Kang Ruicheng’s hands over her shoulder.
Before she could react, Su Jianan had been pulled to behind Lu Boyan by him.
Lu Boyan was expressionless, but he had great strength, and even Mu Sijue, a tough man, would frown in pain if he was grabbed by Lu Boyan like that.
Kang Ruicheng calmly said, “Hey, who are you? Want to act a hero?”
Dongzi was speechless but still silently came up and whispered to Kang Ruicheng, “This is Lu Boyan, Su Jianan’s husband.”
Kang Ruicheng’s fierce eyes became gloomy and sharp, and he stared at Lu Boyan’s face.
“Lu Boyan… Lu Boyan… Lu…”
“Why does he look so familiar?”
“Who are you?” Kang Ruicheng’s eyes became totally sharp.
Dongzi felt speechless even more.
“I’ve said he is Lu Boyan, Su Jianan’s husband. Is there a problem with brother’s brain or ears?”
“Don’t entangle my wife again.” Lu Boyan coldly warned Kang Ruicheng. “Otherwise, I’ll get you go back where you come from!”
Kang Ruicheng came to himself from the shock he had experinced before and smiled. “Have you investigated me? Then, let me make it clear—” He pointed to Su Jianan and continued, “Your wife—I’ll certainly get her.”
“You’d better have such a capacity.” Lu Boyan held Su Jianan’s hand and looked back slightly when he left, with cold eyebrows, “I’m waiting for you.”
He took Su Jianan down stages and got on the car. The black car quickly ran on the road and into the seemingly endless traffic stream.
Just like the last time, Lu Boyan held Su Jianan’s firmly and as hard as before, and his eyes looked so deep that no one knew what he was thinking.
Su Jianan struggled with her hand. “Boyan?”
This time, Lu Boyan came to himself quickly and took Su Jianan into his arms. “Accompany me to a place tomorrow, will you?”
“OK.” Su Jianan felt that she should explain ahout what had happened just now. “I didn’t expect to meet Kang Ruicheng. I wanted to wait for you there.”
“I’ll handle Kang Ruicheng,” Lu Boyan said, “no matter what he do, don’t pay attention to him, okay?”
Su Jianan truly believed in Lu Boyan and nodded. She hugged Lu Boyan’s arm and rested her head on his shoulder. “I didn’t want to talk to him in fact.”
At the entrance of the police station, Kang Ruicheng still looked at the direction where Lu Boyan’s car disappeared, and his eyes became more and more strange.
He had never felt so familiar with someone like this before.
Some of his old memories that were covered with dust seemed to come back to him now…
Dongzi felt a chill from his spine. “Don’t tell me you changed your target and has a crush on Lu Boyan…”
“Investigate Lu Boyan. I must know all the detailed information of him before tomorrow noon,” Kang Ruicheng suddenly ordered Dongzi, “especially his family background.”
“He is a returnee,” said Dongzi, “I’ve investigated him before. He moved to the United States with his family when he was a teenager. He established his comapany in the US at the very beginning and moved the headquarters to City A later.”
“I don’t want to know these things,” Kang Ruicheng said, “I want to know about his parents.”
“Parents…?” Dongzi looked at Kang Ruicheng with surprise and suspicion. His intuition told him that something was strange. “Brother, what happened? Is he an acquaintance of yours?”
Kang Ruicheng smiled and said, “Maybe he is my ‘old friend’.”
Dongzi instantly understood what he meant.
Old friend? There was no such thing in Kang Ruicheng’s life.
He only had——old enemies.
“I will start investigating him immediately when I return.” While he said that, his cell phone rang. He looked at the caller ID and eased his face. He pa.s.sed the phone to Kang Ruicheng. “It’s Xiaoyu.”
Kang Ruicheng looked gentler as he answered the phone, and a calm voice sounded in the receiver. “Daday…”
Ten minutes later, Kang Ruicheng rang off the phone and returned it to Dongzi.
“Brother, how about… we take Xiaoyu back to China?” Dongzi said, “He is only four years old. It’s too pitiful to leave him to the nanny in the US alone. I heard that children at this age needed their parents the most.”
For a moment, Kang Ruicheng couldn’t help but be persuaded.
But the next second, he suppressed the feeling well.
“Nothing will change even if I get him back. I won’t have time to accompany him. Besides, it’s not safe for him to stay here. Once others know he is my son, he will be many people’s target.”
“Can’t we look after a child with so many of us here?” Dongzi refused to believe him. “He is your son, but now, it seems that you abandoned him…”
“Shut up!” Kang Ruicheng yelled. “He is the only offspring I left for my family, and he will grow up, get married, and have children abroad. I”ll never allow him to come back, never! He should never have known I’m his father!”
Dongzi dared not to say anything more, and dared not to sigh and repeated that the child was poor.
The boy was four years old, but the time he stayed with Kang Ruicheng was less than three months.
But the blood was thicker than the water, and the child was willing to be close to him.
It was not that Kang Ruicheng didn’t care for this child, but that he couldn’t.
He couldn’t let outsiders know that he had a son, couldn’t go out with him, or even couldn’t be too close to him.
Born as Kang Ruicheng’s son, Xiaoyu was destined not to grow up in a normal environment.
