Chapter 61: Unsuitable Scene (1)
She hadn’t thought it as bragging, nor did she think it a harm, only offhandedly talking about it. Even after waiting a good while, she still didn’t hear Lin Xinyu reply. Thinking he fell asleep, she called for him again: “Xiaoyu.”
“Un.” Lin Xinyu gently sounded. Just then, she noticed Lin Xinyu’s abnormality. Usually, he has a lot to say.
“What’s come over you?” she straightforwardly asked.
Lin Xinyu answers: “Nothing, I’m just not used to this new place we moved to.”
Lin Xin says: “It’ll be fine. Wait until I familiarize myself with the area, I’ll take you to stroll around S City and teach you how to use computers.” She saw an old computer model in the study. This world’s scientific and technological level was behind her original world’s by over a decade.
“Un.” Lin Xinyu again responded. It’s not that he didn’t want to speak, he just didn’t know what to say. Lin Xinyu hadn’t realized until after he fainted at the orphanage last time. He couldn’t keep up with her. Neither did his knowledge exceed Lin Xin’s, nor did his physical strength compare to her’s.
The longer Lin Xinyu remained silent, the more unsettled Lin Xin felt. The child was sensitive at heart, but she didn’t know where it was that he felt sore. She leaned over towards his end and asked him: “You’re unhappy?”
A moment later, Lin Xinyu replied: “No, I’m very glad, having a new home.”
Lin Xin says: “This place isn’t bad, plus uncle Cheng is a good man. Two days from now, he’ll take you to see a doctor. Your illness isn’t curable, but the doctor you’ll be seeing is skilled. In the future, don’t toil so hard, like last time when you pa.s.sed out at the orphanage, you nearly frightened me to death.”
After Lin Xinyu woke up from that faint, Lin Xin did not ask him for the specific circ.u.mstances, only blaming herself for not taking good enough care of him. He wouldn’t tell Lin Xin that he was tired in such a way on account of reciting lessons from memory, only silently telling himself to keep in mind, later on, that everything has a limit. He mustn’t let her worry another time.
“Un, I know.”
“It’s fine as long as you know.” Lin Xin turned over, her back facing Lin Xinyu. All day she felt rather tired, so she closed her eyes to sleep. Calling to mind Lin Xinyu’s gloomy state, she turned around and put her arm over his shoulders, taking him to her side and pulling him into her arms, she patted him twice, saying, “If you’re unhappy, just say it. You have me.”
Lin Xinyu greatly profited from Lin Xin’s little maneuver. His mood suddenly soared, wide and clear. He shrank his body and squeezed it a bit towards Lin Xin. They were only separated by quilts, but Lin Xin didn’t feel that there was anything off, she left this point up to him.
Lin Xinyu was like a kitten which had managed to nab a fish to eat, again happily crowding towards her side a bit. His head fell on her shoulder, lightly rubbing twice, then again rubbing down twice more. He then had something to say to Lin Xin, “Lin Xin.”
Lin Xin didn’t respond, her steady breathing indicated she was asleep.
In the darkness, Lin Xinyu softly slipped into her comforter, wrapped his hands around her waist and fell asleep listening to the pitapats of her heartbeat.
The next day, Lin Xin woke up to see Lin Xinyu with her nestled together in a single quilt and thought to herself: yesterday, did you or did you not take him for a teddy to hug all night? Oh~ this isn’t good. In the future, we had better sleep on separate beds.
Cheng Qingrong saw the two children coming out of the room, both of them appearing as if they’d only just woken up. After a moment’s pause, he said, “You two are both already big. Some things should still be avoided, no matter how well you get along.”
Lin Xin heard and was taken aback. It took a while before she understood what he meant. He was saying: how come the two of you slept together last night?
This was quite an awkward misunderstanding. Lin Xin embarra.s.sedly responds, “It won’t happen again.”
Cheng Qingrong, despite listening to her saying that, still harbored some unease. He is a doctor who knows more about the physical condition of p.u.b.escent children than anyone else.
“Xiao Xin, you are more sensible than Xiaoyu, you shouldn’t be too dependent on him.”
Standing behind Lin Xin, Lin Xinyu opened his mouth and said: “Yesterday I was afraid of being by myself, so I ran off to find Lin Xin.”
Lin Xinyu developed beautifully, his pair of big eyes are bright and damp, like a fawn subjected to a scare. Cheng Qingrong, sighting his expression, unexpectedly couldn’t open his mouth to find fault with him.
“Breakfast is ready, come eat. Once we’ve finished our meal, I’ll bring Huihui back and, in the afternoon, I’ll go have a look at your new school.”
Breakfast consists of ordinary soy milk served with deep-fried dough sticks [https://imgur.com/a/csUWV4x]. After eating breakfast, Cheng Qingrong went out to pick up his wife, leaving the two children at home watching TV, to further acquaint themselves with the surroundings.
